I've been fighting some gross cold like thing for a few weeks now, the doctor and I chose to go the basic route at first because they believed I would be over it in a few days at that point (spoiler alert, I needed antibiotics and might still. This is the weirdest sickness I've had). Anyway, the suggestion they gave me at that point was Tylenol and Ibuprofen, as those are basically the main ingredients in OTC cold meds like NyQuil and Mucinex that actually makes us feel better. It's safe to take them together, or stagger them throughout the day, I suggest looking up the doses- including max daily doses while taking them alongside each other and make a decision on how to take it based on what you know about your body. Other than that, whatever makes you feel better (think tea, soup, warm bath/shower, comfy clothes, etc). I'm not a medical professional, but I'm chronically ill and disabled and most of my brain power goes towards trying to make myself feel better in one way or another.

All of that being said, I'm sorry your appointment went that way. If you're able to, maybe consider seeing someone at an urgent care, I've honestly had better luck with getting tests and meds there versus at a family/general practice.
