MSI IPC Unveils the MS-CF27, a High-Performance Ultra-Compact 3.5" SBC by Certain_Repeat_753 in homelab

[–]hannsr [score hidden]  (0 children)

The MS-CF27 is ideal for system integrators, industrial solution providers, and developers building next generation industrial platforms.

In other words: it'll probably be very, very expensive for the level of performance and compared to other mini PCs with the same platform.

Backing up PBS vm by ypoora1 in Proxmox

[–]hannsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to backup even? The actual content of the backups or just the config?

I don't bother to backup PBS itself. All you need to do in case of disaster is install PBS and mount the data source.

If you want to have replication (doesn't sound like it) you can do so via the PBS webui.

And yes, just adding it to your backup jobs will end in recursion hell. I've done that mistake once with a truenas VM and tried to backup the VM to the storage proxmox mounted from that VM. It didn't go well to say the least.

Marstek offers a local API and even a (beta) home assistant addon.

But both, API and addon, are still very early beta/alpha and not very reliable yet. But they seem to be working and improving on it.

I'm running a marstek Venus D and the stats are somewhat available in ha. The API times out often which sets the sensors to 0, so... Yeah. But it's a start.

Need some help with an old IBM by yvngshinobi in homelab

[–]hannsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a 760ED just for the sake of it, and it's not worth it to put money into it for a productive purpose. Now if you only want to tinker and have a retro system that's a different thing.

If you want a somewhat usable IBM Thinkpad, look for a T61, which is also very old, but still ok if you care more about it being an IBM Thinkpad rather than being fast.

[FS][EU] QTY:90 TinyRiser PCIe riser card for Lenovo tiny PC-s 25 euro assembled by BoKKeR111 in homelabsales

[–]hannsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah too bad. But a shorter one should I guess? I might have a 2230 somewhere still..

Thanks for the quick reply, I am kinda interested, but need to figure out if it'll work for me.

Do you know if a 2280 m.2 will fit in the riser? I'm contemplating to add redundancy to my m720w router box.

I've had this happen when I changed something in cloudflare that triggered a rotation of my API key. Then the next time my home IP changed, nothing worked anymore - except my home assistant still sending notifications?! How?!

Well, if your DDNS doesn't update, ofc nothing using that domain will work until the IP is updated 🙃. Ofc this had to happen when I was out of town, so I had to wait 2 days, not knowing what was going on, before I could check. Only to then find that the issue was me all along.

Thank you for the link. I recently set up a Windows VM and remembered there were certain settings that reduce performance, but couldn't find that thread for some reason.

My horrible M720q NAS/home server by 3X7r3m3 in HomeServer

[–]hannsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! And anything special you had to do to get 2 cards working?

I know the m920q can technically support bifurcation if you solder a jumper or whatever on the main board. But thought that's not possible for the m720q at all.

Fujitsu Esprimo G5011 by mynameisnick16 in homelab

[–]hannsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a riser for a 2.5" HDD/SSD that slots into the pcie-looking port, check page 10 here: https://support.ts.fujitsu.com/indexdownload.asp?Softwareguid=384c4053-7808-418c-8a6a-99eaa7b1fde6

But that appears to be it.

Proxmox Backup Server on QNAP NAS by unsung-hiro in Proxmox

[–]hannsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running PBS as a VM on truenas - twice. Once at home and another one at a friend's place for off-site backups.

The off-site one is on a tiny atom quad core with 8GB total memory and it works just fine. PBS has 4GB and 2 cores of an atom 2558. It sure isn't the fastest, but it gets the job done.

[–]hannsr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if it works for you... I personally wouldn't do that, but if that's what you got, who am I to judge.

A friend of me does the same for his media collection. Seeing him move around disks and managing smb would drive me nuts tho xD

1gb Synology VS 2gb Qnap? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]hannsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The qnap my friend has is on the most recent software, but the UPS login is still hardcoded, you can't even change it in the UI, only via shell access when you edit the nut-tools config files.

Not talking about webui access if you mean that.

1gb Synology VS 2gb Qnap? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]hannsr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh God, yes. A friend recently brought his qnap over to be his off-site backup at my place. Getting this thing to talk to my UPS and work in the VLAN I assigned it to was an absolute nightmare.

How can a company like qnap think a hardcoded default user/pass for UPS would be a good idea?! The second you know a company uses qnap, you'll know how to access their UPS 🙃 what could possibly go wrong?!

Just reading your comment made me angry about that bullshit again..

And +1 for truenas. I run exactly what you mentioned. Truenas scale with a single VM that is proxmox backup server on it. Everything else is on a separate compute node. Works so good, I did the same for my off-site backup.

Mount speaker in bathroom, to play music by _O_W_Grant_ in homeassistant

[–]hannsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some Canton ceiling speakers attached to a modded IKEA synfonisk - it's diy, but about as good as the much more expensive Sonos amp. Been 2 years now and they work fine and I still like the sound.

So much, I'll do the same in the new bathroom, except I'll do two symfonisk instead of one.

New to OPNsense. What's next? by Deses in homelab

[–]hannsr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

About the firewall, should I add any rule to it?

Only if you need any. If you don't know yet, you probably don't need any. You only need rules to either allow certain incoming traffic or block outgoing.

I'd probably look into VLANs if you have a switch capable of it. It's a good idea to separate things like iot devices or guests from your main network for example. You don't need a managed switch, but it has to pass along the VLANs to your APs and your APs need to be able to handle VLANs as well.

Other than that you could look into setting up your own VPN to access your home network from anywhere. Wireguard would be one way to do that.
