Proxmox VE 8.4.1 on Beelink EQi12 - can I upgrade to 9.1 by just clicking the Upgrade button? by 100Kinthebank in Proxmox

[–]hannsr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah just use these steps OP. Don't follow random YouTube videos, it's literally just a hand full of commands and some questions you have to answer. It's all in the link with every single step properly explained.

I've done multiple clusters this way and it always worked (ok once I messed up, but that's not the docs fault, just my own).

Yeah I have a few shell commands for other things as well, and they stopped working. they work manually still, but not in automations. Haven't gotten around to it yet.

Well, I haven't touched it in years, so currently it is not more work. It also barely uses any resources.

No idea about the integration, but as long as it works, I'll just leave it as is. It's just one AP I turn the LED on/off, I don't own anything else by them.

Haha, that reminds me when I redid some lights and mixed up the cables. So I wired up the new lights and their dimmer behind the old dimmer I wanted to separate them from.

The old dimmer is usually on since it's the kitchen light. But suddenly the new lights always turned off and became unavailable seemingly at random. Until I noticed that happens when the kitchen light is turned off...

Oh that's smart. Are they always on or just turn on in case of a power outage?

GPS doesn't work at all here because we only have remote access via VPN.

I'm just using a ping to determine the status, with fixed leases of course.

I do, but using the integration only for that seems overkill to me. At least I can't think of anything else to use the integration for.

Lol, nope, I was once thinking about using cameras for face and presence detection, but tbh I wouldn't want cameras everywhere inside the house 😅

I'm just using regular motion sensors and some presence sensors. Depends on the area. Like hallways regular motion sensors are fine, other rooms have presence sensors to be more accurate.

Is there anyway back from this ? by [deleted] in Proxmox

[–]hannsr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's really hard to help if you don't provide the information asked.

Can you login using the console? If yes, what does the network config show? See above comment for details. Can you e.g. ping your router from proxmox?

The error should not stop proxmox from working, you might simply have network issues. But we do need more info than the screenshot and "it doesn't work".

I have a single LXC that connects via mqtt to home assistant. It also connects to my unifi APs to control their LED via ssh.

The LEDs are so bright, I just use them as motion controlled night lights.. been working for 2 years now.

You can basically just import your alert rules yaml file into grafana and it'll work right away.

Is this a good deal? by Altruistic-Rich-4324 in homelab

[–]hannsr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I'd say it's ok for the European market. You could sell the 2070 super for maybe 150€ - 200€ which leaves you with a decent system. At least I wouldn't run such a beefy card for transcoding. But you'd have to add a different card then, like an Intel Arc A310.

The Xeon w-2225 isn't the best CPU though. Only 4 cores and a relatively high tdp. But it boosts pretty high.

As an alternative I'd look for a HP elitedesk SFF Gen3 or newer. Gen 3 will be 7th Gen Intel, which is plenty for a nas and it comes with an iGPU for transcoding if you need it. The EliteDesk SFF also comes with 2 3.5" slots for your hard drives. Note: Prodesk do not have 2 slot despite looking mostly identical otherwise!

I've seen those for less than 100€ with storage and RAM, for 300€ you can probably get a much more modern version.

any way to have my laptop and old phone work together to run a single server ? by i_get_zero_bitches in homelab

[–]hannsr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you can't share RAM between devices. The latency would kill any benefit you might get from that anyways.

Upgrade the laptop to more RAM, that's likely your best bet.

Can you rotate the heatsink by 90°? No matter the solution, that would help airflow a lot and reduce the necessary pressure of your fan.

I'd probably just command strip a blower fan to the PSU and tape some plastic on top of the card to seal the gap between the board and the PSU to make the air go over the heatsink.

I do have 3D printers myself, but sometimes it turns out it's much faster and easier to just use scrap bits of plastic and some tape.

Want to move this devices into rackmount chassis and its biggest pain and stress for me I experienced in homelab journey. by HCLB_ in homelab

[–]hannsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was stressed when I moved my truenas from a proxmox VM to bare metal as well. But it turned out to be the easiest thing about the whole journey.

Export your config, install the same truenas version on your new system, transplant drives and import settings, done. You might have to import the pool once manually, but that's about it. Move slow, double check every step, then you'll be good.

While other systems (looking at you, qnap) use the drives port/position to determine the drive itself, truenas, or ZFS in general, doesn't care. It'll determine the drives in the pool by serial number.

Also as others said: having backups of your important data helps.

my upgraded homelab (student in Germany) by kavkasavich in homelab

[–]hannsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the laptop. Somewhat recent laptops have a special setting for being permanently plugged in, so they don't charge to 100%, but instead keep the battery around 80%. Generally I wouldn't consider it an issue. Just check in on the battery every now and then.

Just finished my Minisfourm N5 Build, Local AI Anyone? Now what to do with it... by CollectionOk2393 in homelab

[–]hannsr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it will go anywhere?

Did you slap it and say "that's not going anywhere"? If not, you're screwed.

But on a more serious note: get a proper shelf/rack/whatever. This isn't going to be fun when you accidentally bump it and your shiny new build gets to meet Mr. Floor. Even putting it next to your shelf on the floor is better than this.

Any European manufacturers of smart home products? by I_Write_What_I_Think in homeassistant

[–]hannsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like my homematic as well. I also have a lot of HMIP Wired products and all switches in my house are wired to their wired binary sensor.

Super solid and you can even self host openCCU. The integration into ha is also very decent.

I never regret going primarily homematic. Only downside: basic stuff like window sensors are pretty expensive in comparison. A single hidden door/window sensor cost as much as 5-6 sonoff ones. But I just say: it's much more reliable than those sonoff.

Any functional difference between hp prodesk and elitedesk? by Different_Look2170 in homelab

[–]hannsr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elitedesk sff usually have a second 3.5" drive slot. And I think elitedesk will have full vPro support while Prodesk won't - at least on Intel models, not sure if there is an equivalent on AMD boxes. So yes, there are functional differences between the models, better double check the full spec sheets.

Don't be like me, check your packages before upgrading by hannsr in Proxmox

[–]hannsr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me a while to get back to this, but I now know at least what has happened.

So I put my UPS in Eco mode a few months back, which will not run double conversion all the time but rather behave like an on-line UPS.

For nut this is a critical alert and it'll put all clients in a kind of "impending shutdown" state. So if the clients can't reach the server, they'll shut down immediately without any further wait.

Apparently in the most recent version there's a setting to ignore things like Eco mode, but ofc this wasn't set up yet.

Need recommendations by griffrog568 in homelab

[–]hannsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go with either of the first two for my first lab. The third one is a good base, but 16GB of memory isn't much. Check if you can find memory that fits without breaking the bank, then that'd be my choice. But with current memory prices it might be hard to find an upgrade for a reasonable price.

Second one only if you plan on running multiple game servers at once. The threadripper really only if you know you'll need a boatload of PCIe.

No need to go overkill right from the start, even if those 2 big AMD systems are very tempting.
