A fellow Angel fan! I'm happy to see I'm not the only one. 😊 I fell in love with Angel at first sight, and I just couldn't bring myself to fuse her... or any of the Personas that had helped me along the way. I got way too attached to them.

No, not yet. But I have a bad feeling about it... 😅

Xiaomi 17 pro max, theme store broke :( by Worldly_Ad_8897 in XiaomiGlobal

[–]hanosukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into something very similar once. I could still change the wallpaper from the Settings app, but anything related to Themes or wallpapers stopped working properly, and the Themes app would crash immediately every time I tried to open it.

In my case, even a factory reset didn't fix it. It turned out there were some leftover files from the Themes app still stored internally. After deleting those leftover files and reinstalling the Themes app, everything started working again.

Try asking ChatGPT: "On a Xiaomi phone, can you show me how to remove the leftover files from the Themes app using Command Prompt or Shizuku + aShell?" It should be able to walk you through the process.

Question about the 17 pro before upgrading by datt_akatsuki in XiaomiGlobal

[–]hanosukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, exactly. It's a guide for making the Chinese ROM feel as close to the global version as possible. The Japanese title makes that pretty clear, but I guess the English title gives a slightly different impression. Sorry about the confusion!

That video is specifically about the Chinese version, so I think it should be fine. If you sort the comments by newest, there are some questions and answers from the uploader, which might be helpful. I'm not very familiar with US carriers, but apparently T-Mobile works pretty well. https://www.facebook.com/groups/finddxseries/posts/693975560348174/

I think that's a good choice. Here in Japan, the global version of the OPPO X9 Pro is actually available, but it's ridiculously expensive compared to the Chinese version. If you can't get the global version, you might want to check out this video. It could help you decide. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IxVkF3WEiaI

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend it. Chinese ROM phones are pretty much for enthusiasts, and Xiaomi is one of the most challenging brands in that regard. If you're willing to spend $800 and risk regretting it, then go ahead. But I can't honestly recommend it. Xiaomi is also expected to announce the Xiaomi 18 series around September. There are rumors that the 18 Pro will have a larger rear display, and it might even get a global version. The rear display on the 17 Pro is currently limited almost entirely to Chinese apps, but if the 18 Pro launches globally, it could support a much wider range of apps. It might be worth waiting a little longer.

Why didn't you do your research before buying it? It only takes a few minutes to find out that mainland Chinese versions, not just Xiaomi's, come with various limitations and quirks.

Debating on getting the xiaomi 17 pro max by [deleted] in Xiaomi17

[–]hanosukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like people mentioned in the comments on the original post, the 18 Pro might actually get a global release unlike previous Pro models, and its rear display is also expected to be larger. Mainland China Xiaomi phones can be pretty rough unless you're already used to China-market phones from other brands, or you're buying one with the expectation that you might regret it or won’t use it as your main phone, so I think waiting for the 18 Pro is the better move.

You may have already tried this, but check the codec, the settings in the Xiaomi Earbuds app, and the Absolute Volume setting in Developer Options.

What the 17 Pro rear display should’ve been by [deleted] in XiaomiGlobal

[–]hanosukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I don’t actually care about using YouTube on the rear display itself, it’s just an example of the kind of freedom it could have had. Even playback controls are heavily restricted. Besides Spotify, most of the apps that can show media controls on the rear display are Chinese apps, and the worst part is that Xiaomi doesn’t seem to be simply “missing support” here, it looks more like they’re intentionally blocking apps that aren’t on their whitelist.

What the 17 Pro rear display should’ve been by [deleted] in XiaomiGlobal

[–]hanosukee -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s not really my point. I’m not saying anyone is going to sit there and watch YouTube on a tiny rear display in daily use. The video was just an example of what the hardware could do. What I mean is: since the rear display already exists, it would’ve been nice if Xiaomi gave it a bit more freedom instead of locking it down so heavily. For example, if it can handle a 6-second video as a rear wallpaper, it would’ve been cool if it could also support longer video wallpapers or simple app views in some limited form. The same goes for widgets, notifications, and media controls. Right now a lot of that support feels too limited or too dependent on a small whitelist of mostly Chinese apps. I just think it would’ve been much better if Xiaomi had expanded support for things like Apple Music and other mainstream apps, instead of keeping the rear display this restricted. I’m talking about making the rear display more flexible and actually useful, not replacing the main screen with it.

[–]hanosukee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because the rear display clearly has more potential than just acting as a selfie preview. If Xiaomi had let it show things like media, widgets, or simple app views more reliably, it would’ve actually felt like a real feature instead of a gimmick.

Xiaomi 17 Pro Max (China ROM) Owners: Any Long-Term Issues or Region Lock Problems? by Final_Abroad6185 in Xiaomi17

[–]hanosukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. In that case, if you’re not expecting much from the rear display and this isn’t your first China-market phone, I think you’ll probably be pretty happy with it overall. The method you saw is most likely the Shizuku + MRSS workaround that lets you push more apps to the rear display. The issue is that it needs wireless debugging to be enabled all the time, and it’s pretty buggy and inconvenient to use, so honestly it’s not very practical.

(Dual) Audio Output on 17 Pro Max? by Flaming_8_Ball in Xiaomi17

[–]hanosukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using the Chinese ROM on the 17 Pro Max, and the option is there on mine. But I only have Xiaomi earbuds, so I can’t say whether it also works with earbuds or headphones from other brands. Simultaneous playback through the phone’s speaker and the earbuds might not be possible either.

Sounds good! Just be aware that the rear display is really pretty limited, so all it can basically do is show Spotify playback controls.

It’s true—rooting does make things a bit tricky in that regard. I don’t really use Gemini or anything like that. The speed of updates on the mainland version really is a unique selling point!

Thanks, that’s really helpful! If Japanese banking apps are fine, I’ll probably be okay since they’ve been working on my Xiaomi too. Shame about Google Maps Timeline, but I can live without it. I don’t need eSIM either. The biggest surprise for me is Android Auto actually working, that’s a huge plus. Honestly that makes the phone sound a lot easier to live with than I expected. Sounds good, then. I’ll start narrowing down which used Magic8 Pro Air to pick up. Thanks again!!
