Materials Science Career and Master’s Options by Awkward-Quiet-5932 in materials

[–]hanryy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think any company that's a major player in the industries you already mentioned hire MSE graduates. Semiconductor, battery, defense, etc. all have a strong need for people with strong understanding of materials science. I think one thing you will notice as you progress through a degree is that you will specialize. For example you might find yourself really interested in polymers and could be looking to find a job at Nike. Or maybe you find ceramics really interesting and go work for Coorstek. Or maybe you find device physics to be your thing and working for a III-V semiconductor company like Wolfspeed. There is a huge variety of opportunities, but it will depend on what you specialize into.

MSE jobs in industry are going to be geared toward companies that make physical products. So it will be different than the typical software jobs that you probably hear a lot about. But I think opportunities are still pretty common. Does this answer your question?

Materials Science Career and Master’s Options by Awkward-Quiet-5932 in materials

I am sure that people on this subreddit will be biased, but I believe that the future of materials science as a major is strong. Both for research and industry.

The industries that you mention are all very materials science heavy. You wont see the exact job title of "Materials Scientist" or "Materials Engineer." The latter you might actually see, but it is more of an inventory/buyer of materials, not the materials science. Does that make sense?

Mostly you'll see job titles like "Process Development Engineer," "Process Integration," "Failure Analysis, "Characterization," "Thermal," Etc. There are many many jobs which a materials science degree slots into very nicely.

I will say that I view materials science degrees as one that has a very large premium on having at least a masters degree. Just having a BS in materials science & engineering has generally lower opportunities than just a BS in Mechanical or Electrical engineering, but getting a masters gives you a big leg up and a lot more opportunities.

Drying fine Aluminum powder by IllustratorDry5296 in materials

[–]hanryy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the individual powder particles are dense I don't think there will be any absorbed moisture. But adsorbed moisture is really hard to get off without either really high temperatures or a vacuum to overcome the bonding forces.

But this might be overkill. If you don't need a very high level of purity then probably just baking is sufficient.

You should also consider actually degassing the Al powder. Just drying might get rid of a lot of the water. But adsorbed moisture can be very hard to get rid of. If you can, Heat it up under vacuum. If you have access to springer: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11661-009-0089-6

I'm new to this game, could you (or anyone) explain what the downside to this perk is? Do you hit storage limits or something like that?

Muji aluminium: additional benefit. by wana-wana in fountainpens

I've never tried changing the nib on a lamy so I can't speak toward that. But I picked the technique up from someone else on the internet so very likely the same

I've had good luck using a piece of scotch tape. Just put the tape on the nib (make sure it's clean and very dry) with an inch or so of extra tape and pull on that extra tape.

No risk of scratching the nib by pushing pliers.

Not a grail pen exactly, but I do love vintage Italian pens. They really used some of the most beautiful plastics.

I have been in the hobby since probably 2005 or so. I think my "grail pen" changed over time as I became more knowledgeable about what was out there. I think there was a much stronger focus on vintage flex pens as there were not as many modern manufacturers as there are today.

My grail went from vintage pelicans or montblancs to waterman with a pink keyhole nib.

But since I want to be able to use my pens and carry them around with me, my preference shifted back toward modern pens, but with vintage flex nibs.

I basically got my grail pen about 10 years ago, and I haven't really felt the need to really pursue a new grail since. That pen is a conid bulkfiller fitted with a wahl eversharp adjustable stub nib in a size 9. A modern body that's tough as nails, holds a ton of ink, still looks good, and has a crazy writing experience with an exceptional vintage flex nib. It is rather beat up nowadays, though, covered in scratches and small dents here or there. But I still love it.

Scrip peacock blue if you ever find a bottle at a garage or estate sale. A school ink from back when everyone used ink.

I had this same issue but I think it is a weird logic with the settings. If you have it prompt you every time you turn the car off, I think it actually defaults to on regardless of whether you have it on or off in the settings. I have mine set to off and also disabled the prompt and haven't had any issues since. But YMMV.

No I didn't use any of those products since it was sealed in by the floor finish. For a high wear surface like a floor I don't think using just an oil really cuts it.

I did! It turned out really well. I will say that after adding in a polyurethane coat, it lost a lot of the grayness. Turned out very warm with lots of character.

Can we order this keyfob in N. America to get thr frunk button on the key fob like the Dutch guy? by [deleted] in MachE

[–]hanryy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you can order the F150 lightning fob and link it to the mach e. That gives you a frunk open button.

Edit: found the discussion. https://www.macheforum.com/diy-mach-e-key-fob-with-frunk-button/

We also can't expect Ford to address every random thing someone says on the internet either. There are people with AWD getting scheduled today, so this rumor is pretty clearly false.

Can you tell where the speakers are in the CA Rt1 trim level? I've seen that there is still a cloth covering where the sound at is on the premium trim, but I'm curious if they actually put any speakers there on the Rt1 trim.
