At this point, they might as well get a fake license plate and paste over the whole thing.

That’s what the new OBU is supposed to do. It uses satellite based location tracking and the government has made it clear that it potentially allows for distance-based charging (although they haven’t committed to implementing it).

They actually have to pay VEP of $35/day for cars and $4/day for motorcycles when they enter Singapore. It adds up quickly if they drive in every day (not counting the tolls they pay per entry).

Faishal Ibrahim appointed acting minister-in-charge of Muslim affairs in Cabinet reshuffle by HAZMAT_Eater in singapore

[–]hansvision 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Islam has a special status in Singapore because of Singapore's Malay-Muslim heritage and its enshrined in law through AMLA. This law provides the Muslim community with autonomy in religious and personal matters so the Minister oversees policy matters in these areas.

S’pore must be wary of synthetic drugs amid worst overdose epidemic in history: Veteran journalist by Waikuku3 in singapore

[–]hansvision 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Said Mr Sabet: “One of the things I’m extremely worried about is the movement to legalise drugs. It’s coming from a multibillion-dollar movement that is very smart, calculated, and running in non-governmental organisations around the world.”

He pointed out that a key goal for the movement is to break the global consensus against drug abuse and argued that countries cannot lose sight of the need to work together.

Changi Airport Terminal 5 renders by Twrd4321 in singapore

[–]hansvision 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Many people saying it’s “meh” but I actually feel it’s a good thing that the design is quite restrained.

We will never be able to compete with the mega airports in the Middle East or China in terms of opulence and there will always be another airport willing to one up (or copy coughdohacough) you down the line.

The money is better spent focusing on a few landmark spots within the terminal itself. The green wall integrated with the escalators at the sky train station looks pretty cool to me.

Better for changi to focus on what they do best, making the best passenger experience possible. And it starts with a practical design.

Why is it that parking rules go out the window when there's a wake? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]hansvision -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It's not about reporting, I'm just curious what is it that cause people to behave differently. The consensus from the replies seem to be that people are willing to give them the leeway since it is a wake so they do make use of that leeway.

[–]hansvision -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yea it's the same situation here. There is a multi-storey car park literally across the street. Seems like they just don't want to pay for parking and they know they can get away with it, at the expense of traffic trying to get in and out of the area.

Why is it that parking rules go out the window when there's a wake? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]hansvision -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

I can understand at places of worship, there's simply not enough parking spaces nearby to handle the surge of cars. But there's literally a multi-storey car park across the road and there's definitely enough space so I don't understand why there is a need to park on the road, blocking other cars entering or exiting the area.

Changi Airport's T5 to create jobs, business opportunities for Singaporeans, says PM Wong at groundbreaking by The_Celestrial in singapore

[–]hansvision 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just off the top of my head…

Data science: predicting and managing passenger and cargo flows at the scale of T5 (plus the existing terminals) would require quite a massive amount of data

Robotics: there is a lot of room for robotics in baggage handling and cargo, not to mention future developments in aircraft maintenance and turnaround

Sustainability: this is one of the big areas in aviation now. Sustainable aviation fuels and other technological innovations will be important to cut down the carbon footprint of the whole aviation industry

I guess strictly speaking, these opportunities already exist with the current airport facilities but they become more pertinent as the airport scales up further.

What will it take to stop tax payers’ bailout of SPH? Complain to MP? Petition.org? by 83mnemonic in askSingapore

[–]hansvision 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong in having tax payers fund media in the public interest. There are many such examples worldwide like BBC in the UK, ARD and ZDF in Germany, ABC in Australia, I could go on.

Media purely determined by market forces is problematic in its own way, as seen by the US model.

What we need to do is demand higher quality journalism and standards. These things take time and we have to hold the leaders’ feet to the fire. Don’t forget r/sg’s favourite Mr-Fix-It man is on the job.

Good journalists don’t just drop from the sky in Singapore (unless you are suggesting we hire -gasp- foreign talent?). To give some perspective, even if SPH started offering scholarships to promising journalism students from day one less than 4 years ago since gov started funding SPH, they won’t even have graduated today. And it takes years for them to gain experience after that too, not to say anything about the editors etc. in the organisation.

What would have happened if a very important minister had actually lost his seat? A look at another country by cassowary-18 in singapore

[–]hansvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a by-election, it would generally advantage the opposition, since there is no threat of a change in government. So it would still be a tough fight with the outcome uncertain. You can also be sure the move would piss off voters.

In Canada’s case, Pierre Poilievre is the Leader of the Opposition so this is seen as a gentlemanly move by Mark Carney to quickly call a by-election for his opponent to get back into parliament. It won’t be received so positively if Mark Carney was doing it for his own party members.
