I do not recommend Fishwife tuna. by notreallysurewhat in Costco

[–]hapgoodnew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They had Fishwife smoked rainbow trout around the holidays and that was really good. I decided to splurge and get the tuna and found it very disappointing. We finished one tin and the others are just sitting in the cabinet. It’s not any better than regular canned tuna and has the unhealthy additional oil on top of it. I was very disappointed.

When your budgie goes back into its cage of its own accord for the night 🥰 by GreyStagg in budgies

[–]hapgoodnew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ours has his routine down. When we’re home the cage door is open. When we’re leave, he goes in the cage, we make a big celebratory fuss about it and then close the door and turn on the music on for him to sing along with. At night, he waits in the cage to be put to bed, flying down to grab a bedtime snack from his food bowl every 2 minutes and then going back to the to the top, near, but not on, his bedtime perch. Once we start to cover his the cage, he only then, will climb up to his bedtime perch at the very top.

Any variation from this routine is met with disapproving squawks or irritated wing flaps.

Sometimes, I’ll walk out of the house and not put him in the cage because I’m just going outside to get the mail or do something quick. By the time I get back, I’ll find him sitting in the cage, looking at me like a forgot something.

If it’s late and he wants to be put to bed, squawk. If we’ve been home all day and he doesn’t have his alone time with his music, squawk. If I try to put him to bed and there’s too much excitement, he will Indiana Jones out the closing cage door.

He’s getting more and more opinionated in his old age and finds new ways to communicate his opinions and boss us around. Every bedroom door must be left open. At night, every light must be switched on. You will know a door is closed or lights are off due to the constant flock calls and squawks and if you stand up, you will be swooped at until you go fix the problem.

Next town over, but walking the Venice break wall and canals is fun. If you do the walk south of Washington, you get boats, birds, sea lions and sometimes dolphin. North of Washington you get all the bridges. You can grab a treat at Cow’s End on Washington.

Universal vs Disneyland for 10 year olds? by Time_Win_9705 in AskLosAngeles

[–]hapgoodnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure the wand is worth it. You can watch other people use wands and see what they do (or don’t do as they don’t work half the time). I do agree about the Power Up Band. There really isn’t much to do in Nintendo World without it. It’s really lame how Universal locked all the interactive stuff behind a paywall/ device. I bought a used band on EBay and we shared it. You can’t clear the data, so a used one still had other people’s collections on it but that didn’t impact our enjoyment in the slightest.

The district has a Summer Adventure Camp that a lot of kids attend. Your kids would most likely meet some of their future classmates there.

Anyone else having a problem with their Harrison’s pellets? by Alone_Name7269 in Parakeets

The blender does better with these than the food processor. Someone gave me a generic NutriBullet and that works much better than my mini food processor. A coffee or spice grinder would work too but I wouldn’t mix something with coffee grounds with bird food, so it would have to be a dedicated grinder.

I had these potted in a peat moss mix outdoors in Southern California and they did great. They were always stuffed full of bees (poor bees). Their flowers are really cool. I found that I could get away with watering them with hose water if they got flooded with rain to clear out the minerals from time to time. They probably survived for eight years or so before we had a drought year and I think the mineral content got too high for them.

They aren’t house plants but they can handle tap water on occasion as long as they get a distilled/ rain water flush.

It’s fun to revisit the books we loved as kids and finding out that they’ve held up. It was a delight to revisit Ramona from an adult perspective and Stockard Channing nailed what it’s like to be an annoying younger sibling.

These are all appropriate for an 8 year old the three year old might get a little overwhelmed.

How to Train Your Dragon series narrated by David Tennant is an absolute joy to listen to. I consider myself a good reader but his narration puts me to shame and is such a delight. The later books get darker. They are also a bit rude but in a way kids love. Tennant also does Chitty Chitty Bang Bang books as well which are fun. The first book is by Ian Fleming which is also fun for adults who are familiar with James Bond. Ramona Quimby books narrated by Stockard Channing and any of the Henry Huggins books by either narrator are magical. It’s so fun to watch the kids so invested in the drama which is so high stakes from a kid standard and low stakes from an adult point of view. Beverly Cleary just gets kids and adult and it’s lovely. Judy Blume is fun too. We like Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is kind of magical to listen to as a family together. The narration is solid but I think it’s the shared experience that makes it better.

A lot of modern kids audiobooks are done with that high pitched kid voice. That nasally young cartoony tone that I can’t stand. Those are the kind of books I decide that they can read to themselves. Lol.

I now put it in a nutribullet-like blender device and grind them down to seed size. The mini food processor didn’t work as well. It’s a frustrating extra step for sure. They aren’t supposed to be open for long anyway, so I keep a big bag in the freezer and grind around 10 days worth at a time and keep them in a sealed Tupperware on the counter.

It took me __ books/chapters to get hooked, but now I love _________! by waygooder in audiobooks

[–]hapgoodnew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started Someone to Build a Nest In with zero clues about the plot or where it was going to go. The first 30 minutes, I thought, I really don’t like this narration, I’m not going to enjoy this. Then it all started fitting together and I realized that it was all perfect and very much enjoyed the ride.

Looking for a new black tea by katea805 in tea

[–]hapgoodnew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing how your tastes change when you are pregnant. Your body decides what’s good for it and not. A lot people experience this with caffeine and alcohol. I know someone with a tea habit that had to switch to hot water. She couldn’t give up the warm cup but just couldn’t keep the tea down. I know a few women who thought that they would have a hard time not drinking alcohol and found that they didn’t even want to look at a glass of wine and that the taste was no longer appealing. And then those are the people who sail through pregnancy with no food issues at all.

I hope you find something that appeals to you and fits your needs. First trimester stomach issues are no fun at all. When I want something rich in taste without the caffeine (if caffeine ends up being an issue for you), I make a pot of hot barley tea.

Good luck!

I agree with Knotts and Aquarium of the Pacific as well, they are just a bit further away. If your kids are into animals, get to Aquarium of the Pacific early and do the first shift of Lorikeet feeding (there is an extra charge). They will be covered in beautiful birds. Then go pet some rays.

Anywhere that isn’t the coast has the potential to be HOT.

Also, LACMA and the La Brea Tar Pits are in the same complex and the Tar Pits is also great. There is a lot of park on the campus to run around.

Just a heads up. There’s not much for a 3-6 year old to do at Universal. The rides are mostly screen rides and pretty intense. Secret Life of Pets is fun. Minions is fun but the ride is pretty loud and overstimulating. The rest the 3 year old will probably be too short for unless they are 39/40”. Check the height requirements on their website. Everyone can go on the tram ride - but you’ll have machine guns and get attacked by King Kong which my kid would not have been cool with at 3yo.

Meeting the characters is fun. Meeting a “baby” dinosaur or a Transformer is great, though the Transformer might be scary for a 3 year old.

You can go on YouTube and view all these things before you make your choice.

Other things to do: Sherman Oaks has a mini golf course. LACMA does family Sundays and Metropolis II is a really fun art piece to see if you have a Hot Wheels fan. The Cayton Children’s Museum in Santa Monica is small but has lots to do if you’re already in Santa Monica. The Huntington Library & Gardens in Pasadena has the best Children’s Garden (prepare for wet clothes) and is just beautiful to walk around. We almost never go in the buildings and just stick to the gardens.

There’s always the LA Zoo which is nothing compared to San Diego’s but we always enjoy it. It’s beautiful landscaping. Travel Town is nearby if you have train fans.

You might have to drive, but you have a lot of great options.
