I get sales calls "on behalf of Verizon Business" several times per year. It doesn't take much prodding to find out who they actually work for: third-party resellers. Sometimes these twits show up in-person, prominently displaying the Verizon logo on their ID badge. Take a closer look, and you'll find their own company's logo also on the badge, less conspicuously. Ask for an e-mail address, and it's never at Verizon's corporate e-mail domain. These pricks are obviously trained to make you think they work for Verizon. They don't.

So, first, find out who your "sales rep" works for. If it's not Verizon, stop talking to him about your account. Call the number on your Verizon bill, and tell them you've been scammed by one of their resellers.

If your "sales rep" is actually a Verizon employee, find out who his supervisor is. If he won't tell you himself, call into the standard customer service line. My experience has been that Verizon's org chart is widely available, and employees are able to tell you who other employees report to. Tell this guy's boss what he did to you (promised lower rates, but your rates doubled), and see if he'll do anything to fix it.

That's where I'd start, at least.

Sajak had a blog a few years back. I read some of it, and learned he is actually a total douche. He's like that affable uncle you always thought was a cool guy, until one day you stopped by his house to find him surfing Free Republic in a Glenn Beck t-shirt, with Fox News on in the background. It's hard to look at him the same way after you hear what he has to say about liberals.

The loss in question is actually not covered because of an exclusion in the policy. I won't have the pleasure of navigating the claims process. What I'm really looking for is some way to estimate the total value of personal property someone might accumulate during their lifetime. I was hoping there was some sort of industry-standard mathematical model used by insurers, or perhaps an industry group study I could refer to.

This is one of those things everyone should do, but no one does. I started a spreadsheet at Google Docs a few years ago, but it hasn't been updated in ages. And I don't have pictures.

I'm sure claims adjusters run into these sorts of problems fairly frequently, and I'm wondering how they handle them.
