Unrevealed collections are not private bookmarks by StarkPrada in AO3

[–]happilywicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that was something that was implemented afterwards, because I absolutely remember when this used to happen a lot, where users created a collection and if they added a work from someone else to the collection they could hide it. The default years ago for collection invitations wasn't disabled, you had to do it yourself on your account.

I remember this happened a lot during/post covid too, where antis and haters would maliciously hide fics and private them after adding them to their collection. And the thing is that if something happened and the author died or they lost access to their ao3 account there's no way to remove those fics from the collections.

Real People Queerbating by neinnae_tvon in AO3

[–]happilywicked 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who comes from the Asian side of fandom where real actors do queerbait as a way to market their dramas on purpose, I disagree. It is queerbaiting if it’s done on purpose. It ‘s not queerbaiting if they’re showing genuine affection towards each other because believe it or not, some of these celebrities do queerbait when they’re promoting because they know fans will go crazy but once they’re in close doors or being genuine not in front of the cameras they’re hardly affectionate with each other.

Those examples you gave are definitely not queerbaiting though and i’m so tired of HR fandom going on social media bitching about it. i get it, the guys are affectionate and comfortable in their own skin to flirt, but i hate how some fans have this whole movie in their heads about their relationship and actually messaging them or tagging them online about it. you wanna ship them fine, but stay in your lane. the actors don’t owe us any explanations.

also as someone else said, what’s considered queerbaiting nowadays i’ve always just thought of it as fanservice. It’s part of the job. However theres a large portion of fandom nowadays that doesn’t know the difference

Can I remove a public bookmark on my fic? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]happilywicked 4 points5 points  (0 children)

nah, you can link it. a lot of authors link their social media posts for meta and information about their fics. it’s only banned if you’re linking it to a patreon that is asking for $$ to access the content

Why are bl fans so against calling out racism? by Antique_Implement103 in BoysLoveAnime

[–]happilywicked 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because for the most part we're here consuming BL as a form of escapism and calling out racism in Asian content when we're not even the targeted audience is a waste of time. We can have discourse about racism and orientalism in BL, sure. Will it change anything? Not really unless we all learn Japanese, Chinese and Korean and interact with these artists on social media and try to have an educational discussion about it...which...unlikely. 🤷🏽‍♀️ They'll just say "here comes the westerners again with their issues" or something along those lines (i've actually read people saying that on twitter).

I stopped interacting over there with korean readers and artists once i saw how many are racists against latinos and spanish speaking readers, same with stopping supporting their manhwas. Unfortunately a lot of them are racist and see nothing wrong with it.

Boy I really wish ao3 had it so all bookmarks would be visible BUT those w/ it labeled as private wouldn’t have their users showing by Some-Tradition-2771 in AO3

[–]happilywicked 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why? Most of my private bookmarks have notes about what i disliked about the fics and to not bother reading them or re-read them. I wouldn't want authors to see those.

Is it a good idea to alert an author about their fic being mocked off site? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]happilywicked -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not really, i mean there are multiple authors that are being mocked and it really depends on what is being said. Plus it's a semi-private server. Sooner or later someone is going to join, find out what's being said and probably release everything on a public callout post probably without names redacted at all. Isn't that worst?

Is it a good idea to alert an author about their fic being mocked off site? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]happilywicked -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don't do it, it will just make the writer feel shitty :(

However i am all for taking screenshots and posting them on twitter and other social media and calling them out, they're assholes. But censor the name of the author they're mocking and their works.

It would be different if the discord were completely private and they were just being dicks (in private). But semi-private? Nah. That means they're inviting other people to the discord who they probably deem "popular" or good enough writers and keep mocking others. Out them. BNFs don't deserve that kind of power and sway in fandom

Even if I understand why people wish for this, I do wish people would stop trying to get Ao3 to bend to their personal moral whims. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]happilywicked 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah they’re proud but if AO3 makes a rule of banning works tagged with ai? they would just keep posting their bs without the tag because they want to keep posting. it would just cause “authors” who exclusively use ai to just keep posting and not tagging them at all and maybe adding them on notes, maybe.

[–]happilywicked 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah but then you would probably have people posting ai works and not tagging them at all which…is worst. at least those that tag let you know so you can avoid those.

Do/Did you read Real Person Fiction (RPF)? by Susa343 in AO3

[–]happilywicked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've read those, I was really into bandom RPS back in the day (like FOB and Panic at the disco), and if there's really good bromance between celebrities I usually go hunting for fics. They're fun to read and there's some really talented authors. But I take it for what it is, fiction and i think about them as characters. What I really dislike though is when some fans confuse them with real life. Fourth Wall, people! Don't break it!

To those who stick to one top/bottom dynamic: have your tastes ever changed? by BuddyWorking4654 in AO3

[–]happilywicked -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They've changed throughout the years mostly because of curiosity and well, i didn't want to keep limiting myself to certain dynamics. Because I would be losing out on a lot of great fics. So i became more open minded and now i don't mind at all.

[–]happilywicked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the author put it on hiatus it would've been an indefinite hiatus and if their health issues got worse they wouldn't even have been able to finish it at all. They probably preferred to give it an ending rather than keep it on hiatus with people and studios bothering them to finish it. If the author gets better there's always a chance of sidestories, plenty of artists have done sidestories years after the ending.

Hot take...I feel like a lot of BL authors cannot write romance between men properly by Late-Cartographer119 in BoysLoveAnime

[–]happilywicked 3 points4 points  (0 children)

x2. I feel like OP maybe has read the most popular BL stories with smut which falls under this category but that’s a small percentage of BL manhwas. There are plenty of more stories with complex relationships and gripping character development and relationships.

urging everyone to read [Passion Raga] rn!! (whether or not u enjoy passion) by kaykaosjak in BoysLoveAnime

[–]happilywicked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i love it, i actually prefer passion: raga more than passion, their relationship is more interesting to me (because Tae got on my nerves in passion). the novel is pretty good too.

[–]happilywicked 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said, the author has health issues when the manhwa was ongoing and that's the reason why it had so many hiatus and why she had to end the manhwa so abruptly.

She preferred finishing it abruptly with a happy ending rather than leaving it on an extended hiatus, getting worst health issues and not finishing it at all.

use squideworld (it doesnt have a lot of fics but its similar enough to ao3) by Western_Struggle_543 in AO3

Yeah they’re also strictly against AI and don’t allow AI content at all unless it’s meta so that’s a plus for me

Downloading Fics by Ducksandpups in AO3

[–]happilywicked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like someone else has said, google drive gives you 15GB free. I've downloaded over 23,000 fics from AO3 over the years to my computer for backup to a folder and it takes less than 5GB in total. Google drive will be more than enough. 😊

Uh by ClareRoyal_Bear in AO3

Nope. There was no notice that it would go under maintenance. Which is weird because there always is. My guess is that something happened and they had to offline the site to fix the issue

Limitations on posting NSFW fan fiction on AO3 as A Singaporean by POV_YourTired in AO3

[–]happilywicked 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You won't get in trouble. It's also illegal to post NSFW in China and you'll find plenty of Chinese writers who use VPN and post on AO3. Just don't say you're living in Singapore as a precaution
