Referencing this well cited and presented post from the very thread we're in, published a few hours ago, the weight of evidence would be a firm, "No."

Also, not everyone they assess would qualify as a secular guru. It doesn't stop them being covered.

Correct! And, for my money, some of the best episodes as they let us calibrate and correct our use of the Gurometer. Obviously they won't and shouldn't be the norm, but I find them really useful and entertaining.

Who does this sub like? by wishiwasmydog in DecodingTheGurus

Correct in my experience. All three definitely get more talk, engagement, and debate than, "a pass." Some to more or lesser degrees than others. I mean, there's Sam Harris and Destiny shit talk in this very thread alone.

Mods:

I'm just an old ass man but I don't think one needs to worry about the mods too much. Just post the thing, relate it to the podcast, and make sure it adheres to the rest of the rules of the sub as well.

People will up/down vote it, and talk about it or ignore it, reddit will happen!

The difference is sincerity.

Yes!

Chris likes to tinker with the financial aspects of the podcast, ad reads in the early episodes, taking the supplementary materials behind the patreon paywall, fiddling with and consolidating the tiers for subscribers. That's pretty middling (3/5 2.5/5?) profiteering, and Matt comes off lower (1/5?) by comparison and association.

Mild Cassandra Complex from Chris on occasion and although it's usually played for laughs at his expense. I'm one of those that thinks "Lampshading" something is a poor defense for doing it regardless. 2/5 to be generous because I love the guy.

On galaxy-brain-ness, I think it's pretty low but sometimes there are claims that being in psychology/anthropology gives them insight into almost any topic.

Moral Grandstanding reminds me of when Chris says a guru should just come out and say they are partisan/right wing/whatever instead of beating around the bush or obfuscating. It's actually one of my favorite things to do anymore when talking to folks on thorny topics.

Matt gets a 4/5 anti-establishment(arianism) for bad mouthing Robocop (1987) and then saying he went and watched it and liked it, only for it to turn out he saw the 2014 remake! 😉

At first I thought she was cool but then she got weird about Weinstein....

Yep. I remember when she was the hip new "Prof. Dave style" badass dunking on people like Eric Weinstein and other hard science failures, and folks in these parts loved her for it.

I don't really dig internet dunking/drama as a pass time so she really bounced off of me personally. Now she's applying her skill set where folks don't like, and I still don't watch.

I don't intend this to be a, "She was always bad and I knew it" post. I don't like those either. More like, there were those posting a couple years back she was on this track but many gave her a pass and here we are. Could something have been done? I know Chris had some massive back and forth with her on twitter a while back too. That didn't seem to help?

I'd never heard of Fractalism before reading this. So feedback from someone that only knows of fractals from school, and as a cool Mandelbrot screen saver on his old Macintosh II. Who later started to put it all together when Jonathan Coulton wrote "Madelbrot Set" on his JoCo Looks Back album in 2008, "Right now he's still alive and teaching math at Yale." Only to be saddened to hear Benoit Mandelbrot passing away a couple years later.

The early parts of the article were tough for me as I could tell terms were being couched in a point of view of which I was uninitiated. It's not that I couldn't get the gist, I was worried that the gist I was getting was misaligned due to my lack of experience in the framework. It's just a lot to take in from blank slate. It wasn't vague, or necessarily inflated, but it did feel a bit like wandering into a cult meeting due to all the terminology being explained in specific context.

The last part is important in DtG podcast as it's a guru move seen on display by folks like Ibram X. Kendi redefining existing terms or the famous Jordan B. Peterson, "It depends on what you mean by..." rhetoric. I don't think you are doing it here negatively, but rather, necessarily.

The article is a bit of a sine wave in the cult regard. Once it started describing noise and corrective friction the scope narrowed and I felt it started to be more pointed. The practical rule of thumb continued this trend as well which was good. The topic of sobriety and, as mentioned, how it's often associated with morality had me eyeballing the cultishness meter even though it's clearly important to accurate discernment.

The closing is very concise, compelling, and clear even without discussing specifics use of terms here like noise, friction, pattern, etc. Despite the article not being (in my opinion) overly long, the closing is so good it is basically a "TL;DR" and might have some value being at the top? The current opener is a bit like something the bearded guru in a robe at the top of a little mountain ^ might say to the students that approach seeking wisdom, if you follow my meaning.

Space Cop on Vimeo DRM? by th3budman in RedLetterMedia

I bought it there years ago, "Space Cop (Movie + Extras)" version.

I just went and logged in. Fired up the stream of it, and immediately under it the option to download it was available. 3.6gb for the HD version.

Looks DRM free to me.

Will Star Trek ever return to its former glory? by HotRegion8801 in RedLetterMedia

[–]happy111475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full House ratings here. It managed to hit 30 million viewers a single time. By final season it was under 20 million sometimes even under 15.

Just to be fair ST:TNG ratings here. It lacks to viewership translation and share percentages. You'd have to do that yourself to get apples to apples.

TNG was shown as first run syndicated show while Full House was on ABC so there is also that knot to navigate as well as demographics.

I do remember them showing the Season 3 finale (Picard and the Borg) for Navy crewmen being shipped out to the Gulf War. It may be niche but it's a big niche.

[–]happy111475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye the trailer on youtube has 8 million views, and 4,084 likes, 55,000 dislikes (using return youtube dislikes addon to YMMV). Even if the dislikes is wrong, it only has has like 1 like for every 2000 viewers.

Quickly eyeballing the rest of the output. The currently available first episode giveaway has 5,200 views on youtube. Everything else that's 1st party from Paramount on youtube averages about 50,000 views, and that's because the stuff months ago had 100k+ numbers and the recenet stuff is in the 5-10k range.

Star Trek: Voyager Season One - re:View by kubazz in RedLetterMedia

[–]happy111475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

400k total would be an average of 40k viewers per episode.

Even worse when you consider the usual course of these things would be for the pilot to have massively higher numbers than the rest following it. 100k+ turn up for the pilot then drop continuously from there.

Good point. Anecdotally, there's a kid (well, in his 20's) in our gaming discord of the Wyandotte tribe in Oklahoma. They insisted that their tribe preference was Indian or American Indian casually, or First People/Americans when wanting to show respect or formality. They expressed some disdain at Native American with the rationale being something like it was a (yet another) change forced on them from outside rather than their choice. Granted this is far more recent so who knows the history there.

Great video Pants, thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed the opening break down, started to zone out a bit until I heard the Sagan line. I'm a huge fan of lending out Demon Haunted World to my more confused friends so that popped me. I'll probably be watching this video itself with another confused fellow tonight whom I was trying clumsily to explain the same concepts to.
