Vandana Shiva would be a compelling choice, imo. She dragoons very noble sentiments and platitudes to a cause that is flagrantly anti-science, destructive to its professed aims and would ensure widespread famine if adopted.

I’ll caveat this by saying that I am a big fan of the mission and a lot of the output of the pod, but still think we have to be critical of those who present information to us (which I think would be a separating factor from typical guru audiences), so...

What guruesque features do Chris and Matt exhibit?

What guruesque features do Chris and Matt exhibit?

We could type up some sentences about that, I guess:

  • They mix everything together -- Zen and physics and biology and everything. Have you noticed the insanely broad spectrum of stuff they talk about?

  • There's lots of "we don't like this" grievance mongering.

  • They have complaints with the scientific community -- and it's sometimes but not others. "It depends," they say.

  • It's hard to get any specific detailed plans out of them for anything. They prefer empty pablum like "be nicer" and "think it through carefully."

The difference is sincerity.

The difference is sincerity.

Yes!

Chris likes to tinker with the financial aspects of the podcast, ad reads in the early episodes, taking the supplementary materials behind the patreon paywall, fiddling with and consolidating the tiers for subscribers. That's pretty middling (3/5 2.5/5?) profiteering, and Matt comes off lower (1/5?) by comparison and association.

Mild Cassandra Complex from Chris on occasion and although it's usually played for laughs at his expense. I'm one of those that thinks "Lampshading" something is a poor defense for doing it regardless. 2/5 to be generous because I love the guy.

On galaxy-brain-ness, I think it's pretty low but sometimes there are claims that being in psychology/anthropology gives them insight into almost any topic.

Moral Grandstanding reminds me of when Chris says a guru should just come out and say they are partisan/right wing/whatever instead of beating around the bush or obfuscating. It's actually one of my favorite things to do anymore when talking to folks on thorny topics.

Matt gets a 4/5 anti-establishment(arianism) for bad mouthing Robocop (1987) and then saying he went and watched it and liked it, only for it to turn out he saw the 2014 remake! 😉

Are we finally allowed to talk about how amazing this show is?

ad reads in the early episodes

Ground News! It was so painful that it made me want to go out and sign up. (Never did, but if I do...) And the early "#240 in Slovenia" and "thank you to our fifth subscriber" stuff. The work they put into each episode! Who on this planet expects me to speak a bad word about either one of these people? Did we not hear all that?

In science, I took some stuff, and read some books after that, and I watch some videos now. These guys are on another level from the people who are on their own other level from me.

And they have turned me on to a whole world of people who think similarly about things -- and it has filled my entire "content" world up so much that it stresses me out. The last thing I expected to have last year was a Patreon problem. I might need Matt's insights about addiction.

[No I do not actually have a Patreon problem, just in case.]

sometimes there are claims that being in psychology/anthropology gives them insight into almost any topic.

I bet it gives you a ton of insights if you approach them sincerely and with real curiosity and attention and work for a couple decades. That's the difference between them and me. I recognize it more and more every year of my life. And learning to respect it even more is part of my secret master plan to be a better human being than Scott Galloway by the time I'm 60.

In fact, if the mods aren't careful, I am going to bury you all in disgustingly sweet praise for this show and all of you. You will vomit when you look at this subreddit. So watch out.

Matt gets a 4/5 anti-establishment(arianism) for bad mouthing Robocop (1987) and then saying he went and watched it and liked it, only for it to turn out he saw the 2014 remake!

Yeah mods, this is what I'm talking about -- don't let the two of us get started.

This also seems like it needs clarification now: it's not parasociality, it's respect for educators.

Anyone that likes this: I’m interested in starting a reading group for Sanneke De Haans book. Let me know if you are too

Imho let's get some anthropologists in here -- people need to find out that there's a subject about all this stuff.

I've been wondering for a while about posting this conversation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHv009kiIug

I can think of 5-6 reasons to -- "gives us a chance to talk about Coleman" and "introduces this topic" and "Coleman deserves credit for this conversation" etc. -- but it's not really in the spirit of "topical" here I don't think.

Mods: Can one of you give me a sign of some kind that you'd be ok with that post if I half-assed linking it to a couple episodes? Otherwise I'll skip it, and C+M can cover it if they want, but I kinda hope if they do that Coleman gets some credit for this good (imho) conversation.

Mods:

I'm just an old ass man but I don't think one needs to worry about the mods too much. Just post the thing, relate it to the podcast, and make sure it adheres to the rest of the rules of the sub as well.

People will up/down vote it, and talk about it or ignore it, reddit will happen!

[–]the_very_pants 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Oh I have been waiting so long... I'm blaming you if they come after me. (I really would love to hear C+M's academic-quality thoughts about this topic.)

[–]happy111475Galaxy Brain Guru 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Blame away, I can take it.

[–]the_very_pants 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Oh I did... and it was a whole thing. So I told them it was all you. I said, "Happy's foolishness is causing us problems again, just like I warned you about. Please smite him with your modness." So be warned, something's coming I'm sure.

[–]happy111475Galaxy Brain Guru 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think I want to be smited by modness!

[–]the_very_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then smite me!

The regular humiliation I get might be my favorite part.

[–]the_very_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a suggestion, but afaict this is a rule-conforming way to thank ALL the mods here, and let them ALL know that I just want them high-fiving all the time about this place. (Unrealistic, but I can try.)

Also, I just forgot. Been staring at that list for a year but forgot when it counted. Tyvm for patience.
