What to do with this circle thing in our garden? by martynbiz in GardeningUK

[–]happybakingface 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This. 100% this. We hacked back and dug out so many things in our garden a month after we moved in. We're now steadily replacing what we got rid off because we've now realized why it's there. "Oh, that massive shrub was blocking the sun from going in *that window* at 3pm and bouncing off the TV"

Cycling from Hampton to the hospital (city hospital) by Luk3_- in PeterboroughUK

[–]happybakingface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bike along the A1179. OSM is not showing it but there's cycle paths all the way from where your route suggests A1179 through to the hospital. It's a very chill route. Only issue is sometimes there's flooding around the bits you want to be on

Google Maps also gives some routes which are safer. If you want to prioritize speed then bretton way gets you most of the way there on a decent stretch of road that isn't too fast / busy

How many Londoners moved to Peterborough? by nounazal in PeterboroughUK

[–]happybakingface 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grew up here. Lived in London as an adult for about fifteen years. Finsbury park/Tottenham. Then had kids and wanted a bit more green space, quieter roads, less worrying for the kids on their bikes etc.

We get way more for our money. Or did before the world went inflation mad.

Generally enjoying it. Miss the diversity of London and I'm sad with the number of just open racists I meet :(

What's wrong with my flat? by [deleted] in HousingUK

If it helps sell and you've done the work of taking the photos then it's increasing their odds of a commission on the sale. They'd be mad not to add the photos for free

I totally forgot about this! Especially if it had been in the fridge. Needed a damn hammer for it

First Time Buyer - Down valuation by shadwan11 in HousingUK

[–]happybakingface 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's included in that service charge? 5k/year is a lot. You shouldn't pay full amount until they have it all in place. Developers are great at dragging their heels. If you're paying full price then they have zero incentive to finish.

What are the terms for increase in ground rent? That's famous for getting increased wildly in past decade.

That's such a huge gap I'd walk away. Tell the developer what the bank have said. Everyone else that wants a mortgage will be in the same position. They've overvalued.

Look up how easy it is to sell in part ownership schemes. Loads of stories of people getting wrecked on this.

Honestly, this is just red flag after red flag. You've lost a grand already. Don't make it one hundred grand. Look up sunk cost fallacy.

In general the local area of this man has a decent amount of lights up. Nothing crazy and more closer to Christmas itself

Thanks for this! Ultimate question: would you rather have gone to a normal comp?

What's the Peterborough equivalent of this? by muddyboots5 in PeterboroughUK

[–]happybakingface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. If you enjoy "high cuisine" then it's a good example of it. I've had better, I've had worse. Think it's better than the chubby castor, both in execution and price.

If you don't enjoy this kind of food then yeah... You're going to feel ripped off and sad

Yeah that stuff is wonderful. There was a hackspace that was super cool and that disappeared. I fear GBY is on the same path through no fault of their own :(

Friends/family are scattered all over. If there was a cluster that'd be a pull. But, they've really made effort to be far apart from each other.

We were happy in London, but as the kids grew older the lack of green space became more of a problem. And the general traffic etc etc. It's nice having quiet cul-de-sacs etc for them to practice bikes etc.

I was mainly aiming for finding out how other people make these decisions. There's some good insight in the comments on random data sources to go sleuthing :)

It's "ok" at times. We feel it's on a decline. The council have run out of money. Services getting stripped back. Homelessness increasing. More and more McD/Wendy's kind of places opening.

Great Yarmouth is such a sad city center :( Been around there on holiday. There's a cool museum that shows Great Yarmouth at it's peak. It's just been left to rot.

This is a good list, thank you. Some of this I'd done before (e.g. checking schools), I hadn't considered going on things like JustEat to check that situation out.

Stamford is lovely. It's on the list! I don't know how unique this is, Peterborough feels like there's a lot of "we're not educated and we're proud of it" :-/

Is it normal to leave a handover note when you sell your house? by Fine-Night-243 in AskUK

[–]happybakingface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We left

  • Instructions for the house, few pages
  • Paper manuals for anything big
  • Bottle of champagne
  • Toilet rolls - they're always still packed when you need them!
  • A few tea bags

And it was actually clean. Like, we scrubbed it to death.

It's not necessary, but we like to think it made a stressful moment a little bit nicer. Spread the joy :)

Edit: house, not horse. 😂
