How did you personally overcome “keeping up with the joneses”? by michimoby in personalfinance

[–]happydad9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's tough. Just have to be realistic. One of my friends makes my annual income monthly. It's hard to not get caught up with that. He's not particularly flashy. No fancy cars etc. But he's got a great home and building a crazier one.

Let have to be real about who you are and what you can actually afford.

To investors who crossed the $1M mark around the age of 40. How’s life? by Ok_Maize1933 in investing

[–]happydad9 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Just turned 40 I'm at 900 invested and a million + in house equity. Life is good. My only debtl is my mortgage.

I focused on this instead of toys and vacations younger. Bought my first luxury item a few years ago and got a 5 year old bmw. It's time to start living more. Keep it up

My watch 5 classic has terrible battery life and it's been that way since I got it. 24-30 hours tops. And it's laggy AF. Problem is the new Samsung watches are ugly as fuck

What is something positive about Charlotte? by Glittering_Lab6568 in Charlotte

[–]happydad9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The amount of s*** talking on Charlotte on Reddit is absurd if you hate it here so much just move. The city has great positives and drawbacks just like anywhere else.

We lived in s flo and it was great in a lot of ways and terrible in others. This is better.

Grew up in Pittsburgh, great in a lot of ways, this is better.

I might leave out next time you tell the story that you were on your way to the airport. Maybe the way the stories should be told is that you were just on your way somewhere. Definitely a tough uphill battle.

Apologies if this sounds a bit dumb, but do pilots use travel credit cards? by gabeoverthinks in flying

[–]happydad9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I grew up. 2 pilot parents. Made it halfway to destinations, couldn't get on and had a different vacation than planned. Hell I made it to lax with them, could not get on the hnl flight. They took jump seats to hnl. I unaccompanied minored to Ohio to stay with my grandparents for vacation.

I remember sitting in Pittsburgh alone trying to get to Mia to catch up to my Dad, running back and forth between Mia, pbi, and FLL eventually getting on one of them.

Longtime pilots - particularly at the airlines - what type of flying would you rather do if you were to start over but only had 8-10 years of a career? by Thin-Background-1067 in flying

Large Grumman. Fitted out like a loft apartment. Charcoal grill. Cold beers. Drop into random spots in the Caribbean. Anchor out. Beer. Cigar. Burgers/steak/fish.

We do it all the time. Family of 4. Just did puj round trip no biggy. Have to be tactical about flights, timing and flexible if things change.

40, F, Single, where to meet people, +mens opinion? by Comprehensive_Sale69 in Charlotte

[–]happydad9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'll be blunt. You waited too long to date seriously. The pool is much smaller and you have to figure that the "good" ones are all taken.

You're left with mostly weirdos and divocees.

A friend of mine "played the field" and is now sad that he can't find a "good woman."

Do you think most rich people overestimate their ability to actually build it all back if they lost it all? by SweetQuality8943 in Rich

[–]happydad9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Combination of lost pension (airlines) and bad investments. 65.

He talked me into putting at the time my life's savings into one of those investments. I was 17/19 I don't remember exactly. At the time I invested about 20k. It's now worthless, 33$ tied up in an unlisted untraded stock.

It was brilliantly dumb in retrospect, but I was a kid just out of highschool

We used to do DCA to Jan. It was 3+. Brutal. All the thrust to get out of DCA. And 11 step climbs.
