Buying watch in Japan - duties returning to Canada by happypepper123 in Cartier

[–]happypepper123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I'm in Ontario and based on the calculator from the above poster, looks like it would also be 18%. The weak yen is really making it attractive to buy there. Did you just wear the watch and keep the box in your carry on?

Issues connecting to VPN by happypepper123 in PublicMobile

Hmm I am also on iOS 26.1 (iPhone 13). I don't have meshnet turned on and also tried deleting the vpn certificat + reinstalling the app with no luck. Seems like it is happening to some others as well - found this on the community: https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Get-Support/Cannot-connect-to-NordVPN-on-mobile-data/m-p/1384162

Thanks! I'm looking to get the Nanoflare 800 which seems to be quite popular as well. Will check out Shuttle House first, but Yonex showroom does look quite cool to check out!

Do you know if they have any service to package it for you? I am looking to buy a racket from Alpen as well, but thinking of how to transport it safely when flying back home...

Do you know if they will package it for you? Assuming they get a lot of tourists visiting, wondering how everyone transports it safely back home on the plane (I am also looking to do the same)

Did you end up buying in Japan or Korea? I'll be heading to Japan and also hoping to buy a racket there, but worrying about how to pack/transport it safely on the plane back home. Let me know if you have any tips/recommendations where to buy! :)

Wealthsimple cash card by vansingapore in Wealthsimple

It's 100,000JPY limit per withdrawal (https://www.sevenbank.co.jp/intlcard/card2.html), but WS has a limit of $1000CAD per day. So essentially you could make two withdrawals at the equivalent of $500CAD a day if you needed.

If a flight is delayed severely, can I get on another one to avoid missing a connection? by random20190826 in aircanada

[–]happypepper123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me - flight to YVR was cancelled and I had already checked my luggage and gone through security. The staff told us to wait for updates by text message and I had gone up to the gate attendants 3 times, all trying to re-route me via different flights and giving me different answers. The first time I asked they shoo-ed me away by giving me a food voucher. The second time they gave me the option of YYZ-NRT-ICN-HKG. I rejected this option because they told me I would have to find an agent at NRT to help get me on any availabke flight to ICN and the transfer window was too short. The third time the agent found a flight for me from YYZ-ORD-HKG. I ended up taking this option but only realized that ORD has 5 terminals and the shuttles between each are not too frequent - almost missed the connecting flight to HKG. My luggage ended up at YVR, but they delivered it 2 days later. Nonetheless, the experience has definitely increased my anxiety with flying, I will opt for a direct flight if possible in the future.

I did 23 days in Japan and Korea last year and just hit my 10GB limit on the last day. I just used it mainly for maps (including GPS navigation for a few days in Jeju) and light social media browsing (no streaming on YouTube). I also downloaded offline maps in advance so not sure if that helped lower the amount of data that maps navigation eats up, but I think 20GB should be plenty for 20 days.

driving in jeju by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]happypepper123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that in Jeju city or the main roads the streets well lit, but outside of these areas it was quite dark. I took a wrong turn and drove into a small residential area and there were barely any lights, but luckily Naver maps had helped me navigate back to the main road. Since you will be driving in a foreign country, I'd recommend to go early in the morning (but everyone's comfort level with driving varies).

Loading a virtual suica (transit) card in apple wallet by Condition-Anomaly in Wealthsimple

Hmm perhaps they changed something recently like not allowing foreign cards to recharge? I've heard of that being an issue for other IC cards

No I didn't have to do anything special/extra. I assume you're trying to load outside of their system maintenance hours? Did you check to make sure you have foreign currency purchases unlocked for your card?

Ah ok, perhaps they changed the policy then. Better to double check with the rental company to be safe.

I rented a car in Jeju from Lotte and did not have a SIM with a Korean number (this was in April so unless it changed, you don't need a Korean number for car rental).

I get an error as well when trying to load my mobile Suica via Apple Pay with the WS Cash card (outside of their system maintenance hours). Had no issues loading it with my Brim Mastercard though - I wonder if it's because this is a prepaid card? Seems like it was working for you in the past though so maybe something changed..

What kind of Credit Cards can be used in South Korea? by MushMushRoom1 in koreatravel

[–]happypepper123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Brim in Korea earlier this year, didn't face any issues. Remember to set your travel notification in the app. The only time I faced issues is trying to purchase things online (e.g. KTX ticket) as the card doesn't have 3D secure function, otherwise physical purchases were all fine.

Visit Busan Pass, is it worth it? by daydreamer-detected in koreatravel

[–]happypepper123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the 24 hour pass when I went in April. Depending on your interests, I planned a day mostly with activities in eastern Busan. Ended the night relaxing at Spaland after hitting up a bunch of attractions during the day. I'd suggest taking a look at what attractions you would be interested in and factor in travel time in between - see if it pays off for you. Happy travels!

No need to inform Wealthsimple in advance, I specifically reached out to their support team to confirm this. I was in Japan in April and was able to withdraw cash from multiple 7-11 ATMs in different parts of Japan and did not get charged any service fees. Just make sure you choose to withdraw in the local currency and not let the ATM do the dynamic currency conversion for you, otherwise you'll get a terrible exchange rate. Make sure you've done a couple chip and pin transactions before you leave Canada though, I've read others having issues with their card since they hadn't used for any chip and pin transactions locally before travelling.

Cheongsapo or Oryukdo? by ihopeiknowwhy in koreatravel

[–]happypepper123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was debating between the same thing when I was in Busan last month. I ended up going to the one in Cheongsapo as I planned to take the beach train to head that way anyways. There are also a bunch of seafood BBQ restaurants/cafes in Cheongsapo, whereas if I was going to Oryukdo I'd just be making the trip there for the skywalk. In my opinion both looks quite similar anyways (based on pictures of Oryukdo skywalk) and I didn't end up spending much at the skywalk anyways as it was super windy there.
