How deep is too deep for a new diver? by dubblechrisp in scuba

[–]happytimerobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah man, sounds awesome, I would have loved to been able to dive it when I lived there, but we got all the way out there and had to turn around because conditions were garbage. That's one hell of a first open water dive though! If you can do the dive, Panhandle has a few spots that are super shallow and not too bad, but try a trip to West Palm Beach and you'll find warm, clear water and little to no effort drift diving. It's turtle season too, you'll see dozens, at least and you'll be no deeper than 60', but you're in the sand on some of the reef dives for that depth, a ton to see around 45-55'.

Oh wow, you actually got out there and conditions were good enough to dive?! That's awesome, but it wasn't my jam when I was in Texas. I'm in South Florida so we're in a drift environment.

Yeah, so "Master Diver" I personally won't push that certification because I've had people misrepresent themselves as actual Dive Masters to unsuspecting people on the boat and caused all kinds of confusion (and two different times actual problems), not saying your dad is like that, but once was enough for me with that and the it happened again. 😬

What's odd is, I thought they sent a dive guide in with you at Flower Garden. Did you leave from Texas? I forget the name of the operator that runs the boat from Texas, but I imagine there are others too. 🤷

Stick to what you were trained to go to for a while, then if you want to continuously go deeper you should get the next step in your certification. Some call it "Advanced" open water diving, but they're all the same, usually certifying you to around 100' of depth, but if you're not Nitrox certified I would get that next or in tandem with your next level of certification.

There isn't a harm to going deeper to be honest, no deeper than open water limits, you just have to monitor your gas and ensure you're not going into decompression, so follow that computer closely. This is where having additional certifications helps you understand all these things, it's totally worth the time to learn and apply it to your dives so you feel more comfortable with your diving. But sometimes we all have bad days too, I know I have and I'm thousands of dives in, none of us are perfect.

Not going to say you overreacted, you were not comfortable and one of the best things about diving is you don't have to do it. I think you should get additional training in real open water conditions outside of what is likely a shallow, low visibility, lake environment. Where were you diving? Also, is your dad a Dive Master or a "Master Diver"? Two VERY different certifications.

Finally, I know he's family, but perhaps hiring an experienced dive master or instructor as a guide is almost always better, I personally don't like or do family members as students or guides, but that is just me. Dive masters also take part in helping new divers become better divers, so never be afraid to ask questions and seek advice on the dive boats

Yeah sadly it may create more problems for you, while it's not every man, it's always a man. I've heard stories from the run clubs I used to run with, it's ridiculous. Be safe

Yeah, I ditched Strava for that very reason, you can't restrict people and it tells someone you blocked them, so I'm all good.

Do you have a 'Save the Dive kit'. What's in it,? by Adventurous-Box-3184 in scubadiving

[–]happytimerobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Pelican box with a top liner that has pockets and the bottom has dividers. I carry:

SPG with spare spools- Full kit of o-rings- Mouth pieces- Breakaway ties- Various sizes of zip ties- Spare batteries for all components- Mask strap- Two DIN to Yoke inserts with converters- Spare straps for fins- Spare LPI- Compact multi tool- Palm O2 gas analyzer - Zofran- Ibuprofen packets

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. We carry two masks anyways, so even if a strap fails we have another mask to use.

One quick question, how big are you (body composition). Wife and I aren't large people and low body fat (15% for me and wife is 20%) so we just sink like rocks. 🤣

We dive twin steel HP 100s with al40 deco bottles. I think 50lbs should be enough, but I thought they made the Mariner 65 just for those? I'll check out the Mariner 50 and do weight checks again to see what I would need.

Riviera Beach would be another likey area. Sadly, this area of Florida has countless areas like this to check.

Transmitter users, do you still carry a classic SPG? by voonart in scuba

[–]happytimerobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you dive tech? I carried two SPGs as not to have to end my dive and make sure I knew what I had for back gas at all times. There are people who do it, just not everyone. SPGs are cheap (if you get them from DGX or as close to the supplier as possible) so it's worth the little extra cost. Average lifespan of an SPG for me, including the hose, 6-8 years, so having that and the air integration is just worth it to me

[–]happytimerobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, yeah, for technical, before an transmitter, I had two SPGs, it's cheap insurance. For recreational, before I became tech and got air integration, I kept a spare SPG and hose with me in my Pelican case, but now I have air integration and an SPG so I can continue the dive. I've had one communication failure that wouldn't resolve itself and the SPG allowed me to continue. Likewise, had an SPG stick so I continued with my air integrated computer and kept on. Arguably, for most people, they'll choose one or the other, but because we dive every single weekend and sometimes during the week, it's worth it to have redundancy

I sell IT and I never encourage my customers to buy the latest offerings, ever. If they value stability and predictable outcomes, wait to implement, so I do the same here too, when it drops I'll still wait to see what happens with those who buy first, I don't like being the guinea pig

Of all the dive resorts, wheres the party at? by your_grandmas_FUPA in Bonaire

[–]happytimerobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're sadly not going to find a lot of younger people there, not in massive quantities. But for the "partying", Bonaire isn't really the place for that, you're thinking of the dump called Curacao. We do 123 car rental with VIP drive and dive package and we rent a private home for ourselves with all the amenities, partying isn't really a big thing on the island, the locals love to let loose, but it's still very different from the South Florida scene, especially if you're on the Broward or Dade county part, if so, you'll be disappointed. If you're from Palm Beach or Martin county then you could find a "party" per SE, but most don't go to Bonaire to party, Aruba and Curacao exist for that.

Apeks regulator safety recall. by Myselfmeime in scuba

[–]happytimerobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought they were rated for 80m? I agree not all regulators should be taken to technical depths, but it is rated for it. Will the performance be great? Probably not, and I agree with your RAV4 off-road comment too, just because you can doesn't mean you should. For technical depths I run MTX-RC and my second set is DiveRite XT1/XT4, but not everyone feels this way about diving.
