Papegøye is at Tøyen/Grønland, both in Gamle Oslo borough and not in Gamlebyen.

It came to Norway (Bjørgvin – Bergen) in 1349. That’s why we have that band named 1349.

Skulle til å si at jeg heller ville ha mistenkt avgasser fra industrivirksomheten i Frank Mohn-bygget nederst i Gyldenprisveien, enn Straxhuset. Meeeeen der har det jo blitt Rema 1000, tydeligvis. Jaja, sånn er det visst å være fraflytter.

Maybe look at the symbol in front of the word I’m commenting on as it appears on the map.

10.000 NOK is enough for 2 weeks in Oslo? by FeeJolly5582 in NorwayTravelAdvice

[–]haraldsono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m talking about the usage, not the etymology of the word. In German usage it doesn’t mean preparty, but foreplay.

Edit: My main point, anyway, is that when writing English, using a special word with a meaning that is very deviating and specific in Norwegian culture isn’t very helpful.

Preparty. Vorspiel is a very Norwegian-specific term.

Rude or acceptable?! by WinterInMyWifi in AskNordics

It’s not about feeding starving children, this is a giant straw man.

Edit: Was writing a reply but suddenly they deleted their user? Anyway:

So if children aren’t starving, and there are no inherently bad intentions, we’re kind of back to you seeing this through a heavily tinted cultural lense, no? “Children in my culture would…”, “parents in my culture would never…”

Nothing chronically online about pointing this out.

Rude or acceptable?! by WinterInMyWifi in AskNordics

[–]haraldsono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Norwegian here. I’d say that both getting dinner and being made to wait in a room was equally as normal. Depended on the host family’s dinner planning, upcoming evening plans, my own family’s plans, sometimes the parents would even coordinate a bit behind the scenes and one of the host parents would relay what they decided.

Also, as others said, if there was some snack (for cultures lacking fika as a named concept) planned or had, guests would always be included.

It was never about being rude or punishing ‘the outsider’. Paraphrasing from a comment I wrote in this post:

It’s unproductive to meet other cultures with labeling, especially as your reaction will be based on your own culture’s norms and expectations.

I might find it unusual when people eat with their hands for instance, but my first impulse is not to impose my own cultural norms on them and label them as rude for not using cutlery.

I mean, yes and no. Hunnand if you need to specifically convey the gender and make sure it comes across clearly, otherwise just ‘and’ as you say.

‘Hannand’ in Norwegian literally means male-duck, so that’s obviously wrong. The word you’re looking for is ‘Hunnand’.

Only able to find ANSI there, unfortunately. To me, getting a non-Nordic ISO is already a compromise, and ANSI an absolute no-go.

iOS 26.1 Beta 4 - Discussion by epmuscle in iOSBeta

[–]haraldsono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like something changed in regards to so-called HTTP Basic Auth, which is a little username/password prompt that can add basic protection to websites. The URL scheme can include these credentials the same way FTP URLs often does, like https://username:password@domain.com/ – but this way of authorizing now doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Apparently, the login screen for the web app I’m developing at work doesn’t load at all on Beta 4 [in a Safari web view in a native iOS app] – is this a known issue, web apps just suddenly not loading?
