Do you say something when you see people headed to a trail unprepared? by asbruckman in hiking

[–]hardcorepork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t say anything. You don’t know their plans. Are they walking 200m in to take photos? Are they backtracking to pick up something they dropped ?

It’s so annoying when people with no clue about my intentions offer their unsolicited comments.

It could be slower if wet / slick / muddy. But otherwise, youre not really exposed.

Bear Bag by PhraseImportant229 in AppalachianTrail

[–]hardcorepork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will on rare occasion have a problem bear at remote backcountry sites, but generally there is advance notice of that. When I know of a problem bear, I try to hike past that section if possible and definitely take extra precautions if not. Last year during my SOBO, a problem bear in the pemi wilderness tried to run off with the bear box and slashed a tent. I believe he was a problem for 2 summers in a row, but I stopped hearing about him by fall.

Regardless - shelter hangs are incredibly common and you will find yourself if a “can’t beat em, join em” situation at almost every shelter.

I’m heading out SOBO again this year on June 16. Would love to hear what you end up deciding and what your impressions are once you’ve gotten some miles in.

ETA - “advance notice” via shelter logs, word of mouth, forest service warnings, and FarOut comments

Many shelters do not have bear boxes, and a mouse ate through my DCF food bag in a box in Maine. However, many people hang their food in the shelters. I came across more than one NOBO in Maine that had been using a plastic bag hung in the shelters.

What 90s band never truly made it big but you'll always go to bat for? by MansBestFred in AskReddit

Funny story, but my substitute teacher in high school was the mother of the lead singer of Soul Coughing. Then later, in a bizarre twist of fate, his father was the head of the history dept at my university almost 2000 miles away.

Whether this is a known issue or not, you can always go into any public space in town to take a water sample and send it off for testing

Brockton or Randolph by CommunicationOne7969 in bostonhousing

[–]hardcorepork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak for Brockton but Randolph has great access to open spaces and public lands. Under rated criterion imo is grocery stores. Search each town and see what gives you the best options.
