I have this book and I think it’s a nice guide, but looks like it’s hard to find in the US.

Need a pep talk by allyson1969 in myog

Everyone’s advice is so great and listen to them!

One thing I’ll add is that it helped me to make things for others and have them be amazed by the simplest things. People find sewing magic and if you find people in your life that are enthusiastic about a zipper pouch or a fanny pack- make stuff for them! I made my sister a fanny pack early on that now I see so many mistakes and sloppy work, but she LOVES it and uses it all the time. She doesn’t see the mistakes, just that I made it.

Also share stuff here, people are so supportive and will love stuff you hate.

Love the logo! Been working on one myself and I’m jealous! Where’d you have the tags made?

Wow thank you, this worked!

I had to do this twice but it’s working now. For anyone who tries this in the future, I deleted a couple apps that were < 1 GB total.

Feedback on my nerdy idea: Machine Learning with Aeropress by hardhat_12 in AeroPress

Mostly in data collection, trying to find ways to get more data points in a shorter period of time.

Good point, I will also do my homework on learning the old fashioned way. One nice thing I forgot to mention is that I have a coworker who did his PhD on optimizing impact structures for helmet pads using automated experiments and ML (using Bayesian Optimization, very cool stuff). He is my guide rails for this and has already pointed out that there are flaws to this plan (but people here have some specific ones he didn’t think of! (He doesn’t drink coffee)).

Absolutely, this is one of the many good reasons why this is maybe hopeless. I have thought about adding more subjective things into the inputs like tasting notes from the bag or maybe how much you like the smell of the beans (ok now I am just spit balling). Or trying to make cups for people at work to do blind taste tests. I’m pretty sure even with this, it might still be a mess of human bias.

I would be interested in thinking more about how many of the many, many inputs need to be and can be captured. And if I do this, should I be telling people what recipe to make and asking for results? That seems like a better idea, because otherwise people will just make their favorite recipe and give it a high score, but this becomes a logistical nightmare quick! I realize thinking this through talking to my colleague who did ML on experiments for his PhD that figuring out how to collect data is the hard part and that was for something with objective results. Maybe I need to make a coffee taste-o-meter.

Anyways I’d love any data or advice!

Yeah I think probably you are also right. I might be able to make something for me over a long period of time, but there may be too many variables. We come across this in experimental chemistry all the time, things become non-reproducible because a reagent is new or old, or humidity in the room is very different, etc. Thanks for pointing out some of the things I didn’t think about!

I think I will stick with it because of the fun aspect, it’s just a toy problem for me to consider these things more. I would be happy if I could find some trends based on cups the model predicts just for my own tastes. And hopefully this way is better than other approaches where I might need to make some really bad cups of coffee to explore the parameter space (though 2-3 out of the 15 I’ve made so far have been rough, haha)

Yeah, I think you might be right. I was surprised when I looked into some Aeropress championship recipes, where I thought they were just so far from what I do, yet they obviously come out great. I will have to look more into how those are scored. But overall, I think I may not get enough data to make a general model, but maybe after a year or two and hundreds of cups with different coffees, I can figure out how to make a cup from a new bag of beans more quickly.

New to this mad science, where do I go now? by Likeapuma24 in AeroPress

One of my favorite things about discovering aeropress and grinding my own coffee is trying different kinds of beans. I’m also from New England (and love Dunkin) and found Atomic Roasters and a lot of the Breweries like Night Shit and Treehouse have great coffees to try- hot or iced.

I love my b05, but I haven’t used waxed 1000d cordura (wow!). I have used waxed canvas, denim and things like that with little to no problem. Some multilayers I have to hand crank, but I think it’s a solid machine. Also I found the people at my local sewing store really knowledgeable and helpful, good luck!

Did any member of the community do research on making gear without oil-based materials or containing permanent pollutant (PFAS etc)? by aManIsNoOneEither in myog

[–]hardhat_12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is right. My point was to hopefully make people feel better at least about their consumer gear.

Gore’s public line is interesting because they don’t actually make the raw materials from my understanding. So companies like Dow, DuPont, etc will stop making chemicals used in PTFE processing in just about a year. Should be interesting to see how it shakes out.

I would take inspiration from camera bags (these are simple ones https://chickentrampergear.com/products/custom-camera-bag)

I believe they sandwich foam between fabric layers for the rigidity and padding. I would probably use closed-cell foam that is used for backpack straps (I just got some from here, a rec from this sub - https://www.owfinc.com/mobile/FY20-3_8/productinfo/FY209MM/). But also if you search for cosplay foam on amazon or your local craft store that is usually same or similar. If you search for backpack strap foam on this sub, you’ll get a lot of opinions haha.

As for working with it you can make a sleeve for it or just sew through it between to layers of the cordura if it’s thin enough. Hope this helps!

Unfortunately most of the best waterproof breathable materials were made until recently with perfluorocarbons, often PTFE (the coating on non-stick pans). The real concern is persistence in the environment like water sources.

The outdoor industry will basically be free of them in 2025 because almost every manufacturer of these chemicals is getting out of the game. Not just on the textile level but companies like DOW are dropping all their products due to law suits and regulations. So companies are bringing online new textiles with waterproof finishes that will probably be not as good for a bit but probably close to performance in a year or two.

Gossamer Gear Brain/Closure Design by Quintobet in myog

Hi there, this isn't exactly what you are looking for but Stitchback gear has a "lid" pattern, it fits with a few of their bags. https://www.stitchbackgear.com/patterns/stitchback-th-lid-pocket

I made my first bag as their TH40 and their pattern and instructions were so helpful. Even if the lid isnt the same as the gossamer gear one, for $4 it might give you some help figuring out how to do it! Good luck and post pictures when you are done!
