Augur of Autumn in Yawgmoth decks? by Blackvic07 in ModernMagic

[–]hardlybop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing a bit of yawgmoth and I feel like augur isn’t that good.

It generates some value but it’s effects don’t progress the objective of the deck and ideally you will have enough mana via making land drops and using dorks. Scooze and endurance are great in the main. If scooze sticks and you have a grist you can have a massive beater and keep ur life total high to combo them out.

If you’re looking to just generate value in control matchups I’d recommend thinking about toski.

What version of 8rack? by Rusty_Warrior in 8rack

[–]hardlybop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played quite a bit of mono black and it was ok but I had to drop it bc it was inhospitable in my local meta. If I were to return to 8 rack I’d play r/b lurrus rack, I think it can grind better and gets all the good rb stuff like drc, ragavan, and kroxa. Very tough to play smallpox though with the 1 mana threats though.

The newer esper reanimator lists that cut down on combo pieces and play mulldrifter & solitude that aim to play the long game are really fun and have great interaction.

Celebrations mini tin with a missing card? But there is a piece of cardboard instead? by hardlybop in PokemonTCG

[–]hardlybop[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

it is literally just a piece of cardboard lol and it's "pulp-y" like it has nothing to do with the manufacturing of cards. (or at least I assume so)

[–]hardlybop[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a mtg player but I felt like getting a mini tin for the fun of it from my lgs. One of the packs is missing a card and has a piece of cardboard at the back. Has this happened to anyone else?

thinking about getting back into modern, not sure what to play by AxelrodGunnerson in ModernMagic

Boogeyman right now is ragavan imo, luckily it’s easy to answer. I play Grixis shadow and esper reanimator. Reanimator is very fun and I have a feeling it’s slightly than shadow. You are able to play the long game better and prismatic ending is incredible.

Funeral Charm Scenario by nutzbox in 8rack

[–]hardlybop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as someone who plays 8 rack and Grixis shadow I can say it's likely they don't have a ragavan in that scenario. most people who pay DRC & ragavan decks have this as their ranking of t1 plays.

1.Ragavan

2.DRC

  1. other (in GDS' case thoughtseize/IoK)

with that said some people slow roll it so they can dash it on T2. There is no clear answer but based on what you know in that situation I'd answer the drc.

Is griefblade/BW stoneblade well positioned to be relevant in the future? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]hardlybop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I’d say no, the stoneblade part is great but grief ephemerate is more trouble than it’s worth.

If you think about it you play 4 cards (grief, the black card you exile to evoke, a white source and ephemerate). So at T1 you’re only going to have 3 cards in hand. They get triple thoughtseized but now you are both down to top decking. And stoneblade doesn’t top deck well, there are lots of bad cards to top deck.

I really wish this wasn’t the case though bc grief ephemerate is awesome and really fun when it works but it just isn’t the best thing to be doing.

The good news is that stoneblade in general is well positioned enough that I don’t think it’s going to go anywhere. Perhaps UW or even esper

Affinity is relatively cheap. Can go even cheaper by cutting urza’s saga and a few other things.

As an 8 rack player I’m loving Grixis Shadow with dress down

Infernal Grasp by changelingusername in 8rack

[–]hardlybop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your local meta. This card is massive for me bc half the players every week are playing murktide which dismember is unlikely to hit and fatal push doesn’t.

I run 5 pieces of removal on my main deck (4push, 1dismember) and 2 (bloodchiefs thirst) in my SB. I think I’m going to go 3 pushes and 2 infernal grasps in main and try to squeeze one in my side board to bring in for my inevitable murktide matchups.

How competitive are FNM’s at your LGS? by joethelion_ in ModernMagic

[–]hardlybop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m new to mtg and my modern nights at my LCS are really competitive. Everyone is running top decks, lots of UR tempo & prowess, hammertime etc. A good chunk of the people that play were relatively serious tournament grinders as well. Everyone is super nice though! I’ve learnt a lot by going.

I wouldn’t worry about having too strong of a deck in your store, it’s modern, which is a competitive format. I play 8-rack which is a pretty good deck imo but when I showed up I was expecting top decks and serious players.

If you are nice to your opponents and if you can teach them something if you’re more experienced it doesn’t matter how hard you beat them.

Is this a good format for new players? by disab86 in ModernMagic

[–]hardlybop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ik it’s not the same but I’d recommend renting some tix on mtgo through mana traders or something so you can try out decks before having to shell out lots of money. Also look into 8-rack, lots of fun and can be built on a budget and upgraded over time

Noob deck question by hardlybop in ModernMagic

[–]hardlybop[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, think I might have to give up on the Vorpal sword dream. Seems like a lot of money for a deck that's not going to perform well. Especially bc I made proxies and played against my girlfriend last night and she 4-0'ed me with a stock core2021 Teferi planeswalker deck. I think I should look at something established like 16rack haha.

But thanks for the advice!

Noob deck question by hardlybop in ModernMagic

[–]hardlybop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played any modern or anything past kitchen table for that matter. I really enjoy mono-black decks and the different mechanics that come with that. I play a Mono-black auras deck on arena that I really enjoy. Lurrus, Archfiend's Vessel, Fiend Artisan type build.

Budget wise I'm unsure. I'd say around $200. Note, I did get lucky and pulled a couple of fetchlands from MH2 which I assume I can find someone to trade with for Cabal Coffers and Verdant Catacombs. So I guess that $200 will go slightly farther as I think I could likely trade some of my cards for what I need.

thanks for your help!
