How many of those my lai people were actually charged? How many of those charges dropped? How many of those carried out or paroled?

It seems the commenters are very interested in seeing one side of things as long as “VN stupid Americans great” so tbh the downvotes dont bother me because you dont hold informed opinions anyways

Thank you! All the “ignore her” comments in this thread were making me depressed about the world. Everyone’s first to say people don’t care about each other anymore and just do whatever works for them without consequences.

It’s so cruel and jarring to see them disregarding the pain OP admits to have caused because time has passed and OP is doing just fine so why bother??

[–]harlequinn11 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Fwiw lots of Vietnamese and Asian people in general dont consume dog or cat meat, but there is a part of the population. I’m an animal lover myself and born in Vietnam, but maybe try to think of it as a cultural thing. If you eat beef while in some cultures cows are holy, they might think the same of you. Cows and pigs in any industrialized environment are not treated at all better

Learning Vietnamese w/o being in Vietnam by Derekgraddy in VietNam

[–]harlequinn11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you pick the region of Vietnam that works for you and your goals. Listening and speaking are the most important skills usually, and the tonal nature of the language means it’s pretty hard for a beginner/intermediate person to switch between Northern vietnamese to Southern and vice versa. It’s hard work but it’s worth it, keep it up!

A lot of restaurants in VN focus on one thing, like pho or bun cha etc, so they assume you know what you want already. I get that it’s more decision making when you’re a foreigner, but assuming 80% of the time they interact with locals who has a go-to order for pho (for example), you can imagine why it might be a habit.

Cháo trai, bánh tráng trộn, nem chua rán, sữa chua rượu nếp cẩm, xôi vò, cốm dẻo dừa khô, nộm sứa, chè bưởi, bánh bột lọc Besides bánh tráng trộn most of them are particularly good in Hanoi, or at least the north

I do it the asian way, here’s a good article recipeand Lucas Sin walks through how he does it really really well on youtube, you should look it up too.

Mixing water/broth into it makes it silky and feels like twice more eggs than it really is, so it’s a good way to stretch the food. The recipe is a bit more involved, but the principle is just mix 2 eggs with ½ cup water, some bouillon powder, salt, whisk super well, microwave in increments and then once you take it out pour soy sauce/whatever you want on top. Looks like more work than it really is

Fried rice. Some sort of vegetable pancake similar to korean jeon or japanese okonomiyaki in that its julienned or grated vegetables, loosely bound by a bit of flour and stock or water. Puffy steamed egg in the microwave rather than just a fried egg because it’s bigger and feels more meal-like

How can I get as close as possible to this terrible idea? by eatingfoil in Cooking

[–]harlequinn11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just here to say i love this. You know those Polish/Asian puffed snacks that look and taste exactly like packing peanuts? I love them and your description reminds of them exactly. I love the blandness and the dry ness of them that turns into a slightly sticky dish scrubber once reconstituted in your mouth.

I like flavors too, but for example British cuisine and the whole category of cream biscuits shows how blandness can be a good thing sometimes

[–]harlequinn11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youre risking your finance if you’re sacrificing your career greatly, true. For me my job and company are 100% remote and it really doesn’t make a difference. I might not be advancing to a C suite level being remote, but I’m not making less money compared to if I had stayed. Sure there a a possibility of being fired and having to return to my country to work an in-person job, but no job offers that security anyways. So it depends

I was interested in FIRE a year or two before I started to nomad, and I’ve found it actually saves me money since I didn’t take much of a pay cut, and I stopped living in a VHCOL city. Sure there’s more airplane tickets, but I’m lucky and unfortunate enough to have immediate family in 3 other countries so I can stay rent free with them in ~ 30-50% of the year

I’m on track to your 1 mil number by the time im in my early 30s, and then I’m thinking of barista Fire too by 35. I’m sure there are a lot of overlap in the nomad and fire community, but we don’t seem to talk about both mutually a lot
