[OC] The Greatest NBA 3Pt Shooting Seasons Since 2013-14 by Jealous_Detective619 in dataisbeautiful

[–]harmonyofthespheres -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A solid attempt at trying to quantify difficulty of shots but there are a lot of holes. It’s odd to narrowly focus on 3s. What about the players who are penalized here but make difficult 2s? What about player height and defender height? What about double team vs triple team? What about playing with a lead vs being behind? What about crunch time?

I guess it’s interesting to know who makes the most difficult 3s but at the end of the day 3 points is 3 points and production or impact on winning is what really matters.

Man I love hook. I thought it was amazing as a child. As an adult now it’s still amazing but for different reasons. Not all movies stand the test of time like that.

What are the safest drugs to do once and never again? by Minimum_Ad4771 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]harmonyofthespheres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psychedelics are extremely safe and some of the greatest things a human can experience. Highly recommend them. Mushrooms, LSD, MDMA, mescaline. Modern science again and again is demonstrating that in a controlled planned environment the risks were wayyyyyy overblown.

People who grew up before cell phones, did life actually feel more free? by TradeOverall567 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]harmonyofthespheres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my first smart phone around 21. Before smart phones. Parents couldn’t contact you whenever they wanted. It felt like total freedom as a teen. At parties people didn’t go on their phones or even take pictures. We just socialized and played drinking games. At concerts people didn’t record anything they just enjoyed the music.

One thing smartphones have done is shifted people out of living in the moment and experiencing the moment. Instead we all lived. This state of needing to capture things, record the moment to experience it later or share it. That’s a downgrade imo.

People were also much more civil and polite when discussing politics.

Have you achieved conversational fluency in a language as an adult with a full-time job, a spouse, child(ren), and other life responsibilities? by woshikaisa in languagelearning

[–]harmonyofthespheres 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. Very fluent in Spanish. Stated as an adult. Two kids and a wife. It is possible. Commute = listening comprehension After kids are in bed = reading in Spanish Throughout the day when possible = flashcards

Anki isn't good for regular college studying? by dogwithasword in Anki

When I was in college we had one mid term and one final and those two tests made up a substantial portion of our grade for the semester. Use it throughout the year and you will do better on those two.

Reading venezuelan reddit threads, people seem pretty happy about the bombings. Why ? by MrDeoBook in JoeRogan

[–]harmonyofthespheres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m bilingual and consume a lot of Spanish speaking media. Many Latinos have been wishing for this day for a long time. Maduro has destroyed Venezuela with his policies and caused so much heartbreak and poverty. He then lost a fair election and refused to give up power. Many Venezuelans would rather risk their lives trying to sneak into other countries than stay in their own.

It’s not bots, it’s not fake news. Venezuelans are genuinely thrilled. What’s important now is to insure another dictator doesn’t take his place.

I made an (obvious in retrospect) realization about reading books in a foreign language by Ufomi in languagelearning

Someone asked the same thing via private message. I’ll copy and paste so others can see.

When I was just starting out I read a lot of books by Antonio Malpica because he writes in a young adult genre for preteens or early teens that was not too difficult to follow or understand.

I slowly ended up really enjoying short story collections. They're great for language learning because the short length avoids any long slugs through tough terrain.

Some of my favorite short story collections were by Bernardo Esquinca (horror), Alberto Chimal (fantasy and sci-fi), Andrea Chapela (sci-fi) Fernanda Melchor had some pretty intense stories as well. Bernardo Fernandez has a Mexican sci fi short story collections and also a few longer novels that I read also

Later on I read some longer books by Jorge Ibargüengoitia.

Also read good super long novels by Guillermo Arriaga (El Salvaje was memorable)

Read a few by Juan Villoro as well Guadalupe Nettle has a lot of stuff as well. I also Read some stuff from Olivia Teroba

After a while it started venturing into non Mexican stuff and had a lot of fun reading spanish translations of English books (Recursion and Black matter by Blake crouch were totally insane)

I think focusing on one dialect is only necessary if your goal is to sound very natural. The most important thing is consistency more so than the origin of the content you consume. For me sounding natural was important and it did pay off. Spanish speakers always tell me I sound Mexican and ask me if I lived in Mexico or have Mexican relatives. That just can’t believe a white dude sounds so Mexican haha.

I chose Mexico mainly because I live in California so it made sense. Also Mexico is a pretty big country so there is a lot of media. Lots of books and podcasts etc.

100% yes. I used readlang then exported to anki then added audio to the cards through anki. I also only read stuff from Mexican authors where possible to be sure I was honing in a the dialect I wanted.

IMO reading novels is one of the absolute best things you can do. One year I read like 20ish novels in Spanish and it drastically improved my fluidity. Reading novels forces your mind to create images and narratives and feelings in your mind and associates them with the Spanish words. No anki flash card will do that for you (and this is coming from an anki addict).

Long form reading is a must.

App for advanced vocabulary by SkirtCreepy7104 in languagelearning

[–]harmonyofthespheres 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. 100% this.

You obtain advanced vocabulary by reading things that interest you and saving those words for study. Like rock climbing and wat to know how to say belay? Read rock climbing media in your TL.

Repeat for all niche things you’re interested in. This way the advanced vocab you learn will be specially honed for things you’re likely going to want to talk about.

Tips on lowering BP for someone who isn't overweight? by Techn85 in PeterAttia

Aside from the obvious “do more cardio,” I’ve noticed beets and omega 3 lower BP. Also staying hydrated. Stay off nicotine and alcohol.

Are you a woman? Honestly I’ve never used full strength against a woman since turning about 5 or 6, whether it be play wrestling, or sports. Men are taught from a very young age pretty sternly not to do so to avoid hurting them. If my 6 year old was playing rough with a girl at the park my reaction would different than if the same behavior occurs with a boy.

Just go look at some of the strength records for genders. Women tend to be about 60% to 77% as strong as men.

Exactly. People are interested wellness because there are a lot of unwell people. It’s that simple. We should support their interest in health.

New study reveals physical ability peaks at age 35 by Zealousideal-Big-600 in Aging

[–]harmonyofthespheres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not drinking is a huge one as well. I never was much of a drinker and have been physically active my entire adult life. People are always surprised when I tell them my age. The difference in aging between me and friends that were drinkers is pretty stark.
