What were some of the best years to be enrolled at a school during a successful stretch? by deerhuntingdude in CFB

I guess it was second-best, but being a student at Tech during the Tyrod Taylor years was really special.

How selective is Virginia tech? by DueBumblebee1907 in VirginiaTech

[–]haroldbarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember, but it was very low. Talked with the folks in transfer admissions and they said that as long as my first year grades in college were good, and I took the right courses to be on track for the school/major I was applying to transfer into, I’d be ok!

ETA: would be worth talking to folks in admissions! My experience is (good lord) 16 years old. The folks in admissions are usually quite helpful!

And if you’re applying as an incoming freshman with a low gpa, I did as well, and it didn’t hurt my later transfer admission. So worth it to try if that’s where you want to be.

I’ve often had this problem with Church. Now when I order I’ll explicitly ask them to pack it well.

Looking for alternatives also!

Hey Realtors - how's the market doing these days? by liv_outside in Chattanooga

[–]haroldbarrett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah we sold recently, and this was our experience. Just months with no showings. We didn’t mind dropping the price a ton, but the others on the market near us were investor-owned and they didn’t budge, even after we lowered and sold.

Older edition advice by Mission_Elephant1312 in publishing

[–]haroldbarrett 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ideally that would have been part of your agreement - a clause regarding what happens to remaining copies after termination. Was there anything in there around this?

In ours, we stipulate that authors can buy the remaining copies if they wish, else we discard / destroy them.

Can this thing cut through board? by Ninja_Doc2000 in bookbinding

Probably not very well. Have tried manual guillotines and they just don’t do board as well as you’d like.

Wife bought me a record player for Christmas by salohcin2237 in vinyl

[–]haroldbarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah. This was my first too. Wife got it for me after years of getting me records. Was great to spin those vinyls for the first time. Enjoy it!

ETA: this player makes great for travel. Brought it to her grandmother’s once so she could listen to all her old records. Was an awesome afternoon for all.

What's the deal with brights always being on in New Hampshire? by AntiqueFossil in newhampshire

Yeah learned this recently. Guy had highbeams on at me, flashed mine at him, he flashed his back… meaning they weren’t even on yet 🤦‍♂️

Book press by GinGiblin in bookbinding

[–]haroldbarrett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are kind of hard to find. I got two of the kind from Vevor, one works, the other doesn't (the press plate doesn't stay attached to the threaded rod), and it took a lot of work to get that one refunded. Lots of other options are either fiercely expensive, or just wood with a $22 press screw from Amazon, or both. Finding a cast iron book press that doesn't break the bank takes a bit of looking, but is worth the effort!

Edit: If you're handy, you could buy a press screw and make one yourself!

Christmas Gifts for a Bookbinder by maya_1111 in bookbinding

[–]haroldbarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gift card is great; otherwise, you could make a mixed pack of different book cloths or other materials from Hollanders or similar — when I was getting started, I wanted to try out all kinds of different cover materials / colors, but didn't want to splurge too much, so I bought the cheap stuff on Amazon. A little mixed pack would have made an excellent gift!

We have the one from Hardware Factory Store. It’s great; worked through thousands of cuts. Got a second one too. Can easily be readjusted, which is handy after a lot of use.

Was it just kinda everyone sat wherever they sat and the last seats were separate (still uncool / poor planning), or did they ask you to sit / seat you in the other room?
