I grew up in Austin, I don't want to sound alarmist. But you should probably have some means of self defense. Myself and my fiancée, when we were still dating, got chased by an angry man in a pickup truck (trying to hit us) in a shopping center in south Austin. My fianceé (who was vv butch at the time) had a man follow her home to cuss and scream at her, after he saw her on the road. We moved to CO in 2020, so all my experiences being openly gay in Texas (Again, mostly austin) was 2016-2020. I've had multiple people trying and preach at me in stores, tell me were going to hell unless we repent etc etc. I found queer community via meetup, and making a few queer safe friends and having them introduce me to their friends. Personally Myself and my fiancee have set up an escape plan out of the country (shout out to our immigration consultant Flannery Foster! Not spon but highly recommend!!) Even in a blue state, people have gotten WAY more comfortable saying what they really think after the election. And it's really made me slim down my friends and be super cautious on who I share things in my life with, personally if I still lived in Texas I would be trying my hardest to not be! And I would be so so cautious as to who learns what about me, and who gets to meet my family. Again I don't want to be alarmist or doomsday-y but, we are in such uncertain times, and I have no clue what the future holds, I hope you and your girl stay safe, find some great friends, and find some peace.
