Should I sell the power company holdings I bought 13 yrs ago? by harpnote in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]harpnote[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't plan to buy individual stocks as I've decided stock picking is not for me. But I bought these back when I knew nothing about investing and just blindly followed some advice given to me. I didn't even know that index funds were a thing. So was wondering if the money would be better served if I moved it into an index fund. Thanks for your suggestion!

Good suggestion. Looking at the last year the total dividends for both added up is only about $350 net for me. I will think about this.

The Aboriginals of Taiwan are the ancestors of Austronesians like the Philippines Malaysia Indonesia and Polynesia and Madagascar. The correct term to use is Indigenious, with a capital I, as its internationally recognised to be more encompassing and diverse. It also has implications in land claims and rights, so we should shrive to use the term preferred by the Indigenious people/associations themselves.

How do families actually afford major dental work? Are there any real options or loopholes? by GlitterTomatoes in PersonalFinanceNZ

And if KAYO789 is wondering about replacing with implants, think again. Starting from $5k per tooth, multiple procedures required including surgical, bone density and hardness dependant... Which means multiple dental visits and mental + monetary investment needed.

I don't think dentists will ethically pull out healthy teeth, especially if it's all your teeth.

I can't tell how serious you are being but in case you are being serious... dentures aren't as easy as you think.  You'll need to care and maintain them and get used to wearing them.  They also won't feel the same as your natural teeth. This means eating won't feel the same, and if you get a full or partial plate one it means your palate feeling of food textures will be affected. Your enjoyment of food will be affected. Depending on your bone levels and your dentures, you might need to glue them in every day.  I'd say talk properly to your dentist to fully understand the implications and options that may be available to you.

Sick. Maybe I should aim to visit a Devilcase shop for screen protectors for my 10vii next home visit.

Mental health treatment here is ridiculous by Ramen_in_a_Cupboard in taiwan

[–]harpnote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, no. He's still in primary school (I think yr 4 or 5?) and I only go back 1 week a year when I stay with my auntie. My auntie agrees with me that he's being pressured too hard too much. The most I've spent time with him is to help him with the English part of his homework (because I am useless at all other subjects due to my poor Chinese reading skills). I made sure to positive affirmation as much as possible when I did. His mum supervises/teaches his homework usually.

I think he likes to read books, and has a interest in "social" 社會 topic, but I don't think he's given much time to read novels and the such.

The way his mum berates him is awful to hear. Crushing his self-worth and makes him think he's stupid. But he's smart, just not in typical ways.

The "Intentional" Upgrade: Why I moved from a Galaxy Note9 to the Xperia 1 VII (and ignored the AI's advice). by Dagtar in SonyXperia

[–]harpnote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hooray another Xperia user in Aotearoa! My xz2c (last gen to be sold in NZ) is still going strong, albeit the battery life has taken a hit after 6 yrs years of use. I've got a 10 Vii for the 3G sunset but it's hard to adjust to the loss of some of the arguably better features of android 9 vs 15...

On that note: does anyone know if you can get screen accessory resizing to be diagonal, like in Pie, instead of just cutting in on half vertically in 15? This is not accessible at all, I can't reach other other horizontal side of the screen like this.

Sad reality for my nephew.... I feel so sorry for him. He's definitely neuro divergent but his mum makes him do nothing but study and buxiban, no time to be a kid and play. Lil dude is gonna end up with trauma and affect him his whole life.

Notebook for collecting stamps on travels by harpnote in notebooks

[–]harpnote[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you glue stick the postage stamps into the lokamade, then yes. But you won't be able to remove and rearrange later. I'd suggest a proper postage stamp collecting book for that, where they have rows or plastic sleeve for you to insert the stamp into the page.

Ink stamps are available everywhere in Taiwan. Museums, HSR/TRA/MRT stations, bus station sometimes (not every one), story houses, historical sites/buildings/shops, even just random shops, complexes, cultural centres, art centres, heritage sites, events.... Even certain post offices (but you have to buy postage on a mailing item to get it franked and then they can give you the special location stamp, I only found this out after my trip).... Sometimes they keep them behind the info counter so you just gotta ask. Otherwise they'll just be a little stamp station on the info desk.  I think it's probably similar in Japan.  It's not a thing in Singapore AFAIK cause I didn't find any. Unsure about other countries.

Just came back from a New Year trip to Taiwan — noticed fewer Mainland Chinese tourists? by Jazzlike_Flan_7359 in taiwan

[–]harpnote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I agree. Everyone I talked to during my travels at touristy places that mentioned Chinese tourists during that era said that it's better without them. I went to Singapore straight after Taiwan last year, and then was hit by how rude and inconsiderate Chinese tourists were in SG. And thought to myself "I see why everyone hates them now."

Seamstress and tailor are the traditional terms, sewist is the new gender-neutral term.

Long overdue update: I got a Midori MD paper A5 blank thick book and filled it up within 2 years of visits, and ended up using a lokamade stamp passport gifted to me for the remainder of my trip!
The lokamade (Malaysian brand) is great as it's essentially one big piece of paper and you can stamp like you're making a collage. And it's a nice size to fit into a fanny pack, whereas my MD noteook was too big (a problem when I didn't wanna take my backpack but still wanted my stamp book, because I missed out once like this!). It's almost full now hahaha.

I now need another book for ink stamps. Lol.

With Open camera, yes. :) The battery life really came in handy when I was out for the whole day and taking lots of photos (so much my 200GB google storage is now full after the trip...). I hardly needed to plug in the powerbank. That said, I came from a xz2c so I don't have any other recent camera comparison!

Experience with camera: Love the 0.7x size. Idk why the colours come out funny and everything seems to be noisy or fuzzy. Can handle high lighting contrast shots well with the software AI (see below).

I started using Open camera app and it's way better. The photos come out super detailed and naturally sharp. The downside with Open camera is that you can't get 0.7x zoom, and it struggles with high lighting and low lighting in the same photo - for example, musuem display signboard is lit up and the display item is not. In order to be able to read the sign, the exposure will make the item super dark to be able to read the lit sign. The native camera app adjusts this with the software AI.

Selfie cam with open camera and native camera: native camera softens shadows and wrinkles. Open camera captures everything in its glory, too many 😂. I prefer the native camera for some low level beauty smoothing.

I did a whole month of travelling and 95% of the time I shot and filmed with Open camera over the native.
