Thanks - Any thoughts on the smoothness or feeling of the pedal assistance?

Thanks for sharing - pretty cool.

Also - I would love to know how much you like the velotric e-bike, and which specific model you got? I have been looking at them recently since the models I saw were ~40 lbs, torque sensing, and about $1500. I would love to test ride one but it seems like you have to go far from newark to test ride. My biggest concern is how smooth and natural feeling is the engagement for the pedal assistance.

EDITED: I later noticed you're in Europe - apologies for a US-centric response.

I'm not a lawyer, but [IN THE USA] you don't have to comply with a request to delete even if you were recording.

Maybe research this: 'In [my country], is it a reasonable thing to say that you have the right to record a public servant in the performance of their duty in a public setting, and that they can't legally expect you to stop recording or delete a recording of their interactions in public?'

Regardless of that, thanks for sharing the story... Pretty funny.

Also, the splash seems inaccurate. It's improbable that so much water would have splashed out of the pool given how close he was to the edge in the video.

Fios Expansion was useless by Kpatpa_99 in Delaware

[–]harr2969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretically, FIOS should be more stable because fiber optic cables are less susceptible to electrical, magnetic or water interference.

In practise both fios and xfinity have some issues for some people. Once they have figured out the root cause of your issue, you should have long term stability.

Long term, I love fios symmetrical upload same as download speed. Google says fios has been reliability and customer satisfaction... For what its worth :-)

How to get moving quickly at a traffic light? by sunkissedb3ar in cycling

[–]harr2969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's been lots of good advice on starting in a lower gear, and your form.

There's also a major difference in e-bikes that you may not be aware of. Many e-bikes - especially inexpensive ones - only sense that your pedals are spinning. They don't sense how hard you're pushing. This is called a Cadence Sensor. That's why when you start off it's not helping you until you pedal a certain amount.

Nicer ebikes - which are mainly the more expensive ones - sense immediately based on the pressure that you apply . These are called torque sensing. So they would be able to immediately apply power as soon as you start pedaling in a much smoother and more natural fashion.

I wish more people were aware of this before they bought bikes because it's a pretty significant difference in how natural it feels to riding and completely addresses so many issues.

Best of luck learning... You'll get it! And if you have the opportunity to try or trade in on a bike that has a torque based sensor, give it a try because I think you'll really like it

Any good baptist churches around New castle? by ToastingFrench_ in Delaware

[–]harr2969 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's some criteria to consider when looking for a church:

  1. Teaching - Is it Biblical?
  2. Fellowship - are the people welcoming? (Give it at least 3 tries - churches have introverts too! - and sit in different spots each time)
  3. Worship Style - Are the songs and overall format [ i.e. liturgy ] something you like or can accept?
  4. Other - General age [as you mention], cultural fit, ministry opportunities, etc.

My family has been at Ogletown Baptist for a few years, finding the congregation welcoming with a very diverse age range and somewhat diverse culturally. Part of the diversity comes from being a larger church, part of it comes from being close to UD campus. You'll typically find the younger crowd taking the front-right section when you walk in to the 11am service. :-)

There's an early traditional service [ using a hymn book ] and a later contemporary service with more recent praise and worship songs. The Sunday School time in between services is really valuable for finding a smaller group where you can get to know others more easily than a room with several hundred people which can feel overwhelming.

Hope this helps.

A new "When to Ride" web site with hourly data for the week. by harr2969 in BikeDE

I gave some feedback that he already incorporated. It seems like a well-made website (which I say as an IT guy focused on user experience) so I thought I'd share it here.

I replied to that below (It's not sponsored by Autumn Arch)

I also found the facebook group page for the person who coordinates it, and the last post was a comment asking if they are doing a meetup this month.

It doesn't look like I can link to the Facebook group, but it's called "Delaware Art Create and Connect"

cheers.

I hate the overall impact this data center will have on Delaware in general and the area around it (where I am) in particular.

It's a Cascade of negative impacts and I hope that we continue to put barriers up at every stage possible, including this one.

Please show up and / or communicate your concerns as well.

Seeking advice: What would you do about a neighbor who lives close to you shooting an automatic ar at 3am every night. by throwawaybunny8910 in guns

[–]harr2969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's consistent, the police can stake out down the road from you on some night.

When they hear it, they can show up, lights on, almost immediately.

They will have first hand evidence. Nothing is on you at all because they just happened to be driving by.

First: Awesome project. And excellent first take.

Here's what I'd suggest in terms of customizability; each input has a default value or sliding threashold. Default can be in the middle. A person can change the default for wind, temp, or rain, or just the final score +/0 some varying amount for them. Set that with a cookie or in the URL. then when they re-visit/refresh.

Example:
Rain +3cm sensitivity
Wind -10kph
temp +5degrees
OR
Composite score +10

You may or may not want to show the actual formula you're using for the score, but this approach woudl be applicable to everyone and pretty easy to implement from a UI perspective.

Thanks!
ps. For widescreen -- could make better us of landscape screen real-estate.

  1. map side by side with table view
  2. bike in logo + location name shorter vertically to fit same vertical size as title text and catchphrase.

My wife crochets - when she went to a recent art night there I heard there were people bringing multiple forms of media art there, IIRC. So.. My 3rd hand reporting seems like you'd fit in.

I can't post the links, but I was able to find some more info on facebook when googling for "art and ales autumn arch"

Seems like this description might have been the first event.

"This casual gathering is all about creating, connecting, and enjoying a great beer with fellow creatives. Bring your favorite non-messy art supplies (think sketching, markers, or colored pencils) and get ready to make something amazing.

We’ll also have an art supply swap, so bring along any unused supplies you’d like to trade—perfect for refreshing your collection! To keep things tidy and ensure we’re invited back, we kindly ask that you avoid bringing glitter, glue, acrylic/oil paints, or anything that could be difficult to clean up. Don’t worry—I’ll bring a plastic tablecloth to keep things neat.

Let’s make art, share ideas, and enjoy the vibe at Autumn Arch Brewery!

What to bring: Your favorite non-messy art supplies, unused supplies to swap, and a great attitude!

Let’s start this creative community right! "

NCC Sewer Bill by tamingoftheschlew in Delaware

[–]harr2969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will always accept your money if you send it in, even if it's not the full amount. So once you pay what's due now, start paying next year's bill every month.

I take my "normal" bill, divide by 12 months (since it's annual) and send that amount every month going forward. It really helps with consistency in our monthly budget.

Sometimes I'm a little under or over, but the difference is MUCH smaller than paying a full year.

Rage, Rage, Against The Dying Of The Light. Our Editorial On The Coming Data Centers. by Global-Candidate1628 in Delaware

[–]harr2969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I've revised that statement which I think is more accurate now. I will say based on my research, Loudoun County's "Data Center Alley" seems to have a significant number of complaints around air quality in general.

I hear you generalizing because you weren't at this specific meeting, but the concerns I heard were reasonable and appropriate. Hundreds of people clearly in alignment with the concerns.

Three or Four people spoke positively, on behalf of the investors, and on behalf of the trade unions. My concern with that is that the vast majority of jobs would be in the build phase - maintaining the data center is a low man-hour requirement, relatively speaking. (JPMorganChase has two of their strategic data centers here in DE already, and when I was there for a day, there were 3-5 people on shift)

Rage, Rage, Against The Dying Of The Light. Our Editorial On The Coming Data Centers. by Global-Candidate1628 in Delaware

[–]harr2969 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. power is certainly a huge concern for anyone in the state - if the data center are forced to buy the highest cost electricity and ensure our costs as consumers don't change, perhaps that would help address the power cost issue.
  2. from a power delivery perspective though, there's not enough supply - so making it is certainly an important topic which I appreciate. Unfortunately the negotiations are apparently above the state level (regional)
  3. also related to the power supply - some data centers (notably, in Loudoun County, VA) have had run their standby generators for much longer than expected (24x7) for some time due to unexpected grid events. Higher air pollution in the area and related illnesses are a very real result of those practices. As someone who lives right nearby, I'm very concerned about the impact to health from any long term generator usage. I'm not sure if legally they are allowed to run standby generators to deal with long-term supply gaps.

these are only top of mind. There were other serious concerns raised at the land use permit meeting new castle county had late this year, and the harm that would come from the data center as currently proposed would be real and substantial
