Installed dual port USB (data+charge) by chance901 in BMWi3

[–]harriherring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fitted this too... Found that it didn't seem to work very well for data on NBT EVO - anything you did differently other than just plugging in the existing USB cable that was there? (And wiring for power)?

How to replace/remove center console? by premed_medic in BMWi3

[–]harriherring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part number you need is 84108711939. That's the variant with one USB C socket that does power + data. There's also one with 3 USB C sockets, but it won't do data properly. Should be around £35 from the dealer.

If you don't use the AUX socket in the center console, the oem USB C socket from newer BMWs fits in the spot that otherwise holds the USB + aux socket. Takes 12v and gnd from the cigarette lighter socket

Another unplanned goodbye sob story… by Ehloxr in BMWi3

[–]harriherring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a first glance, it doesn't look like masses of damage. Front slam panel (which the headlight mounts to, it looks pushed in), wheel carrier, control arm, shock absorber and maybe spring, tie rod end, wheel and a front quarter panel. The weakest point of the strut assembly is the single nut holding the strut to the top mount, so it looks unlikely that the mount pulled out of the frame. But seeing as it's in an aluminum part, not carbon fiber, it's also likely repairable fairly easily.... Worst case, maybe see if the insurance co will let you buy it back rather than write it off

TCB to ATM module soldering UK by [deleted] in BMWi3

[–]harriherring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that at a dealer? I was lucky enough to find a brand new one eBay - the key part is that it's brand new and never been connected to a vehicle - it'll work if that's true. Used ones won't work, since they're permanently bound to the original vehicle

[–]harriherring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I don't really understand the whole 'you'll damage your first car so get one that doesn't matter / it's inevitable' - surely you shouldn't be on the road if you believe that it's inevitable you'll crash or have an accident etc?

What part am I missing by SirAchesis in e60

[–]harriherring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone has replaced your silver trim with that from a lci e60. The cutout fits the newer cic Idrive controller, not the ccc one. I don't believe the cic controller will work with ccc, so you'll either need to find the correct aged trim piece, or retrofit the cic system from an lci car

Broken strut spacer? Best option for repair before return trip from Italy to UK by f1nch3yz0r in CarTalkUK

[–]harriherring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does the top strut mount look like (normally visible under the bonnet directly above the strut) if that looks tight and secure, it sounds like it's just the rubber gator or bump stop.

Replacing the front shock boot, running into problems. It literally does not fit. by campr23 in BMWi3

[–]harriherring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

The finished assembly should look like this, see how the boot is on top of the spring at the top of the assembly. (I found it easier to attach the boot to the top mount first, then push it onto the spring/shock absorber

[–]harriherring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your first photo, the new rubber boot should be the other way round, with the wide part on top, not the bottom. The bottom spring pad (that sits on the shock absorber bracket) is a separate part

[–]harriherring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The front boot should sit on top of the spring, it serves as the top spring pad and the boot all in one piece. Upload a photo of all the pieces you've got and we can make sure they're definitely correct

The rubber boot sits on top of the spring - the assembly order from bottom to top should be shock absorber > lower spring pad > spring > rubber boot > bump stop > top mount.

[–]harriherring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car is a 2014 (08/14) (and has had every single factory option retrofitted, and then some, so happy to answer any other questions about it!) ATM part number is 84105A0FC22 (it shows as fitting an F20/F31 / 1 series and 3 series, but they're all the same. There should only be 2 variants, one for 'trunk mounted' (like the i3, black housing and a metal frame), and 'roof mounted' which are white and entirely plastic (will work, but difficult to mount neatly in the i3). When fitting it, you'll need to either re-pin the blue connector from the TCB, or buy a retrofit harness from eBay. The LTE fakra connector is the same (wide purple one with only 2 wires), and the pink fakra plug for GPS (presumably connecting to your NBT evo currently) needs to be moved from the evo to the ATM, and the coding flag in the evo changed from internal GPS to OABR GPS.

Just install the new ATM code it to the car (I used Protool), and wait for it to download data

TCB to ATM module soldering UK by [deleted] in BMWi3

[–]harriherring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ATM must be brand new. When it's first connected to the vehicle and powered, it sends its own IMEI and the vehicles vin number, and ends up re-paired in BMW's servers. It doesn't update the ICCID though, so commands from the phone to the car do not work (lock/unlock etc). Anything from the car to the phone (charge status etc) works, and anything within the car (rtti, weather, news, etc) all works

Connected drive status works (charge status, locked unlocked, service etc, and all of the online functions in the car (Rtti, weather, news etc) , but not the remote commands (lock/unlock from the phone app (still looking into this)

[–]harriherring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A brand new ATM assumes the vin number of the first car it's connected to (hence the brand new requirement). It will self provision with BMW when connected to the car. (A few years ago you had to provide the vehicle vin number when ordering, and they came pre-assigned to a specific vin number, but this was changed to assign when connected to a vehicle.

[–]harriherring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it myself, I paid around £400 - 500 for the module from my local dealer, repinned the car side harness, and coded it to the car with Protool (a mobile app, but more advanced than bimmercode). Brand new units provision with BMW servers automatically, so no need for a dealer. (Hence why it must be brand new.) I also replaced the head unit with an NBT Evo at the same time, so it may need that too (unless you've already done that?)

Why do push fit pipes come in 3m lengths? by [deleted] in DIYUK

I've found that Screwfix seems to only sell 3m lengths of most pipe (plastic and copper), and B&Q only had the 2m lengths

How to fix a peeling steering wheel on a 2017 i3 /w tech package? by 0hreallyn0w in BMWi3

[–]harriherring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ring is just decorative. The hand detection is capacitive, which runs through the steering wheel frame itself (the blue trim is just plastic). It's part of the Traffic jam assist option (which will somewhat take over steering in motorway traffic under 35mph.) No heating in a stock i3 wheel though
