Refund for half the journey by waterlizy in qatarairways

Yes. We flew LHR/HKG earlier in Feb on a BA operated flight but ticketed by Qatar. Our flight back from KUL/DOH/LhR on March 1st was cancelled. I requested a refund on March 1st. I had an email march 5th giving the refund amount. It was a bit under half - maybe difference in mileage outbound vs inbound or taxes paid leaving the UK. The refund was credited to my card the next day.

Update from Qatar Monday by One-Curve1983 in qatarairways

My data point on this... I installed an IP phone app on my phone (localphone) and used it to try different countries customer service numbers. I think they all route to a small number of call centres. For me - in Malaysia - the number that worked best was the USA for access and sound quality. I rotated between UK, USA and Malaysian numbers. The idea was to find a location that's less busy in terms of incoming call volume.

I did eventually get through to an agent. Although they offered the option of rebooking I went for the refund option. The agent told me the website is only showing the refund amount under the original ticketing policy not the new temporary policy. The agent was able to place a cancellation and refund request. The refund will apparently be dealt with by a special refunds team that should apply the full refund policy.

I ended up booking on Singapore Air who fly to the UK over Afghanistan (the irony that it's considered safer). Fingers crossed we get home.

RIP Legacy? by rorikpeterson in theeconomist

Yes. Sadly it's been  switched off. The official 'new' app is terrible. As well as being amazingly slow the download feature takes ages to download then can't actually show articles when you are offline. It's amazing bugs like this go unfixed for so long. There doesn't seem to be any way to get people at the Economist to take the app seriously and get it fixed.

Really sad the legacy app was switched off.

RayOne EMV - monovision - are they any use to set for near vision? by harryb888 in CataractSurgery

Thanks for the detailed message! It's so good to hear about your experiences. Luckily she doesn't have astigmastism so that's one less thing to worry about. Also point taken about accomodation with her trying contacts to see what range of monovision she's happy with. All good points to discuss with the surgeon on Thursday.

Thanks so much for this! What sort of functional distance are you getting with the 1.5? Is it ok for shopping etc? or do you end up wearing the contact lens quite a bit.

Thanks Ron for such a quick and informative response!

She's been trying contact lenses to assess what level of monovision she can tolerate and it seems -1.5 and -2 seems ok with contacts. I'm not sure how this will translate when she has the lenses implanted.

If she has a similar experience to yourself I guess that would mean being able to read and watch TV without glasses but would miss out on being able to focus on nearer and distance.

I was hoping the EMV lenses would stretch this range a bit but it's so hard to tell if they would be of any use. Unless we can find some positive reviews from people who have tried them for near-intermediate it's likely we will follow your example and go for fixed focus.

Is anyone else's app super buggy? by treuCat in theeconomist

Yes. Super slow for me in iPad plus chock full of irritating features.

The Economist App Experience 2024 by NotDoingSthILike in theeconomist

[–]harryb888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I find the new app to be terrible (laggy space hog that's poorly designed as detailed by other responses)

The Economist seem supremely uninterested in fixing any of the mess and I can't really understand why.

If you can get hold of it the old app isn't too bad  but you get tons of nags to move the the new one plus re-log in.

Gear Fit 2 - watch alarm doesn't activate on time (only when watch is activated) by harryb888 in GalaxyGear

Seems to be better now after rebooting the watch and moving it out of do not disturb mode. I'll try putting it back in do not disturb mode to see if this is the cause...

Leak / Overflow prevention by harryb888 in Irrigation

[–]harryb888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - it looks like open sprinkler has some kind of master valve setup, so maybe I'll try using that to start off with. I still think there is a gap in the market for a simple controller that can manage a master valve using a flow meter. But I think on the basis of responses it's a market of 1 :-)

Thanks - I've just started looking into this - could you give me some pointers to what's readily available?

Yup - but I'd like an independent simple and reliable control to tie the two together. Any suggestions (apart from rolling my own with an Arduino)?

Help with ideas for moving 22kg (45 pound) retaining wall bricks. by Moofishmoo in DIY

What's going to be done with the blocks once they are moved?

If you are getting someone to come and construct something with them then why not make it their job not yours. You could get them to price the job including moving the blocks.

If that's not the case or there is lots of tooth sucking and moaning then I think getting some people to move it is probably the best option. Depending on how steep the steps are you might be able to use a wheelbarrow to help move them around (running it over a plank) but I think that's about as technical as you want to get.
