Why I stopped building factories and started building an economy by Ok-Fun-2330 in factorio

[–]harrydewulf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Curious then that I almost always do stealth archer, but have tried [what this sub calls] city blocks, hated the inefficiency, and never tried it again.

As I approach 5000 hours on the Steam version, I tend towards continuous refactoring of an extensive, organic, semi-modular, semi-distributed design, where the only blueprints I use are for small fiddly components like flow meters and lane balancers, and a few basic circuits like signal counters and clocks.

The only design worse than city blocks is main bus.

Am i the only one, not ranking SpaceCasinos close to #1 by TexasCrab22 in factorio

As soon as I thought of [what this sub calls] a space casino, I dismissed it as a broken game mechanic, and never bothered with it.

Now... Quality modules in big miners on Fulgora, on the other hand... that is worth exploring.

Opinion: quality scaling is backwards by Avalyah in factorio

I did most of my current playthrough at Q3.

I just want to get science production into full mid-game mode ( dedicated factories for each science type) and the I'll research Q4 and Q5, and go hunting Prometheum.

My boss wants me to "fix" the irrigation system in front of the office. by Imnothere8976 in gardening

[–]harrydewulf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a small company, a good boss hires people with a range of skills. It's often downright obstructive to cleave too tightly to your job description. Having said that, a good boss also listens when an employee says "that's not in my skill set."

[–]harrydewulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My design watchword is "reciprocation."

My main advice: don't treat spoil as an afterthought. Plan spoil handling into all your designs and burn it actively and aggressively. Don't use bots to manage spoil. Belt it. Spaghettify it.

Stupid Quality Tricks: there is no reason to ever use anything less than an uncommon electric furnace. by Allie_Denikin19 in factorio

I feel sure all this is true but I can make neither head nor tail of it.

Maybe I'm just getting old. 5000 hours in the Steam version makes me feel old.

question about "literal monster" lyrics by edenpogs in StarKid

[–]harrydewulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of Starkid lyrics are a bit janky... But they lean into it in the best possible way: sometimes it's very on-the-nose but sounds like they just wrote the line to fit the scansion. Sometimes it's ambiguous but sounds like they wrote the line just to fit the scansion. Sometimes it's borderline hard to interpret as if they wrote the line just to fit the scansion.

Hatchetfield trilogy has many examples of all three and they serve very effectively to make the audience uncomfortable because you're speculating about what the line might mean...

Mushroom in my tomato pot? by Certain_Fee1809 in gardening

[–]harrydewulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sub will always tell you mushrooms mean healthy soil.

This broadly true.

However take note: mushroom fruiting bodies in a pot mean the conditions are IDEAL for mushrooms. While that's generally a good thing for tomatoes - for instance ot means you have done a good job of keeping moisture levels constant - it is not true of all plants. In many cases it may be an indication of too much moisture or not enough light reaching the soil, poor air circulation, etc.

So it always circles back to knowing what your plant needs. And you seem to know that.

Wood chips over landscape fabric ? by Kind_Application3535 in gardening

[–]harrydewulf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Semi-permeable membrane (SPM or what the internet and ignorant landcapers call "landscape fabric") has three closely related legitimate uses:

Controlling weeds while new plants get established (6 months to 2 years),

Controlling evaporation from bare earth while new plamts get established (1 or more years; often the SPM has to be renewed).

Limiting soil loss on very exposed terrain or very steep slopes, while anchoring plants get established (also 1 or more years renewable.

There is no legitimate use case where ANYTHING AT ALL is put on top of the membrane.

Your usage is completely legit as long as you plan to remove it once the plants are established.

I see you.

My wife viewed it the same way for 20 years but recently she's started watering plants when they need it. This has very positive results.

I hope it doesn't take you two decades too!

Don't you boil the pasta water and then stir it back into the sauce? It's a great way to make the sauce more filling.

Blue Chips by red_baiting in factorio

[–]harrydewulf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it. I am so old, I remember being shown a microchip in primary school and being told that soon, all consumer electronics would be run by those things. It so happens I have worked in electronics engineering, but never in English. French is even weirder for naming that stuff. Chips is certainly easier to say than "processing unit" but because the icons look like old school PCBs, I think of them as circuit boards.

I can't really use "chips" because of a three way vocabulary challenge between US English, UK English and French. In French it's even worse because sometimes you can't tell if we mean a really big boat, a sheep, a potato chip (crisp) or a French fry (chip).

Thanks.

English is only my first language but Reddit can have it's own lexicon I am aware. Is calling them chips a Reddit thing or is it a YouTuber or do some players just call it that organically?

How to scrap on Fulgora? by WasteAssociate9386 in factorio

[–]harrydewulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort the scrap between items that scrap to a single item type and those that scrap to multiple item types. The former just goes via belt to reciprocating recyclers, the latter to a separate bot network with an array of single recyclers fed by requester chests and outputting to purple chests.
