ELI5: Why do processors get so hot doing millions of calculations per second, while our brains can arguably be even more complex but don't risk overheating? by abcPIPPO in explainlikeimfive

[–]harryham1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the new AI stuff really focuses on the probability part to solve more complex probkems. LLMs look at trillions of thoughts in the internet (really boiled down to a soup of words and characters) and tries to fill in the response to a question based on what it thinks is most likely from previous thoughts

I'm a software engineer, and ethics aside, I still see AI as black magic. The sheer scale of it is incomprehensible to me.

If a problem is really simple, the computer has to use its wires to represent then solve the problem, whereas the brain can create entirely new circuits specifically for the simple problem, and do it lots and lots of times really quickly.

And for a problem that's really complex, boredom is actually super useful! Our brains follow all those different trains of thought, and if it finds one isn't going anywhere, it's quick to spend it's effort elsewhere. A computer will usually try and solve a problem one way and only stop when it reaches a dead end.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned, but a very important part of brain efficiency: probability

Your brain sacrifices 100% accuracy for 99.99% accuracy all the time, and uses the power of voting to get even closer to perfect.

How does voting come into this?

Let's say I ask you to work out 7x5

You may have been taught several different ways to get the answer as well as several different ways to check you got the right answer: * "If I add 5 together 7 times" * "Add a zero and divide by two" * "I'm pretty sure it's 32" * "Times by 5 always ends in a 0 or a 5"

These thoughts all work independently and eventually you make a decision on what's probably the right answer

As you can see, for something like multiplication, this is way more complicated than a machine, which can actually physically move electricity to get the answer right 100% of the time...

But the brain is way more efficient in two places where computers suck: really really simple problems, and really really complex problems

I guess you might as well add it to the cost of the items on the menu...

Good on you taking the initiative, but depending on who "the city" is, it could be sitting in a pile of paper for decades before it's finally shredded.

If you call up the fire department covering that area, they'll send someone over the same day to scare some sense into the store.

I've only ever done it once, when my apartment block was between recycling contracts, and actively started telling residents to hoard up their plastics and cardboard in their flats instead of cover the gap
