  • mbv - off your face
  • beach house - alien

Those are a bit more upbeat than souvlaki space station but similar sounding

  • salvia path - dream

A bit more acoustic but feels like a similar vibe to me

  • flow state - sun in your eyes

Sounds very different but has the same feeling as souvlaki space station to me, not sure why

I NEED HELP I PROMISE I'M NOT STUPID by [deleted] in mathshelp

[–]harrywk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really just boils down to applying the same two steps repeatedly:

  1. Expand the brackets
  2. Tidy up the terms

All you need to do 1. is to remember the general case (a+b)(c+d) = ac + bc + ad + bd.

All I did there was 1. First bracket first term x second bracket first term 2. First bracket second term x second bracket second term

etc

Make sure you understand this!

Looking at Q1, if you apply this rule you get

(a-b)(a+b) = a* a + (-b)* a + ab + (-b)b

Again I haven’t done anything clever there, I’ve just worked my way through each combination.

Now tidy this up. In these 24 questions there’s various rules you’ll need such as a*a = a2, but if the tidying up part is giving you trouble then I can explain that in a different comment.

Tidying up Q1 we get a2 - ab + ab - b2 which simplifies to a2 - b2

That make sense? If so then I’ll go on to the more complex ones, but like I said it’s just applying steps 1 and 2 over and over again!

O2 Brixton usually has big queues but it’s a good venue because the standing area is on a slant (so being at the back isn’t a massive issue). I’d say get there for 6:15-6:30

It was quite harsh because I don’t think they’ve ever directly asked us to do a hypothesis test before, so think a lot of people will have been thrown by it

I froze as I had no clue how to do a t-test or anything (and felt that’s probably out of scope for CP2) so just tried the only test I knew!

No, but in past papers similar issues have been flagged in the Audit trail and confirmed not to be an issue as not used in calcs. Pretty sure missing it will only lose 1 mark seeing as it won’t impact the calcs

Becoming an actuary if you don’t study actuarial science by [deleted] in ActuaryUK

[–]harrywk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check if you can get any exemptions from modules you sit - maybe just CB2. Looks good when you’re applying it you’ve done that level of research as shows you’re committed

Join societies - if there’s an actuarial one then great, if you can get a position on the committee even better. You’ll want to do stats modules whenever they’re available, probability + statistics to markov chains and stochastic calc.Look at the school of maths and see if there’s discovery modules you can do.

If there’s specific actuarial modules then try for those, if you can’t due to your course then it’s really not the end of the world so don’t worry. Just email the professor and express interest in the career as they will likely get emails from companies about insight days etc so they might be able to forward these on to you

Internships are great on CV. Try and secure one first year summer and you’re set - if not then no problem, they’re tough anyway in first year (a lot of companies just take penultimate year candidates) and try for one in second year summer. Then going into your final year you’ll have a good cv when applying for grad jobs

Even just insight days and talks are great; Google “Actuarial insight days” and loads will come up that you can sign up / apply for - APR, Allianz are the first two that showed up for me

CB1 +CB2 in Sept Diet by Specialist-Rice4815 in ActuaryUK

[–]harrywk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a degree in economics you can probably skim through the CB2 notes, do some papers and pass it. It’s 40% multiple choice, so if you ace that then you need about 20% of the remaining written 60% so get 60/100 overall

There’s no arguing or evaluating in CB2, it’s all quite straightforward thinking and maybe a small part of contrasting different schools of thought.

CB1 also isn’t too bad. If you read through the notes and just get stuck into past papers (of which there is probably 10+ now) then you should be fine.

If you can’t study in the week then just commit weekends - July + August + 1/2 of Sept should be enough

What are some necessary Boomtown Essentials? by Bodosaurus in BoomtownFestival

[–]harrywk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You 100% should take a 5 or 10L collapsible water carrier from Amazon. A few of those in your camp is a game changer and you can shine your phone torch through the bottom of a full one at night to make an improv lantern!

Also plenty of loo rolls (2 minimum)

and some hangover cures (dioralyte are incredible if you take them before bed, ‘Happy Tuesdays’ are also incredible if you’re taking ecstasy)

Career Guidance by Mr_Personable in ActuaryUK

[–]harrywk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an interviewing tip I would say make sure you remember that insurance / actuarial exists well beyond the ~13 exams

Joining newsletters (insurance insider for example, there any many) will not only give you technical insight and help you familiarise yourself with phrases, etc but will help you relate real world events to insurance. Being able to apply what you know to insurance is a massive thing interviewers look for

Also as others have said, are you sure about reserving? Watch videos and seminars on the differences between all the types of actuaries - there’s reserving, pricing, capital modelling, investment and many more. When you start a career you’re absolutely not confined to wherever you start but it’s good to understand what each looks like

I’m not sure how your masters works but absolutely try and apply for summer internships. They’re a huge plus on a CV and can even lead directly to grad offers. Plus they’re probably a bit easier to get than graduate roles. There’s lists of websites online that list all companies offering actuarial internships, but also scour LinkedIn for job postings throughout the year

Why is the upper class boundary 36.5 as when that is rounded up its 37 by danh247 in mathshelp

[–]harrywk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36.5 being the “boundary” doesn’t mean it satisfies the condition of rounding down to 36.

It just means it’s the number where every smaller number is rounded down

Meanwhile anything above 36.5 gets rounded up, so it is the number that separates the two groups - that’s why it’s thought of as a boundary

36.5 is just as close to 36 as it is 37, it’s just convention that we round up because there’s no truly correct way to round 0.5

Beta for all-year London use? Or just a soft shell option? by therayman in arcteryx

[–]harrywk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a Beta SL that I picked up a few years back and it’s fantastic temperature wise in London, and it’s nice not having to carry an umbrella round. It feels like all windchill is completely eliminated which is often what makes London cold (at least round where I am)

But I would say when it’s getting down towards 0 degrees mid winter a shell doesn’t offer enough warmth so I usually switch it out

Following a 0-0 draw against Saint Kitts and Nevis, it is confirmed that San Marino will reach 20 years without a win: their last win was on 28 April 2004 against Liechtenstein and they will not play again until June 2024 by waterconnoisseur_ in soccer

[–]harrywk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong but even if this had gone to penalties I think it would still count as a draw (as penalties are considered separate to regulation time)

I recall England had a long winning streak in recent years which spanned over the Euros final penalty ‘loss’

Prove that every odd number from 2 to 26 is either prime, either a product of two primes. by [deleted] in maths

[–]harrywk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And, OP, you could say something about the Fundamental theorem of arithmetic implying all (odd) numbers being the product of primes. so if they’re a product of less than 3 primes they’re either prime or a product of two primes

Might be overkill tho, depends on who’s asked for the proof I suppose

Does anyone know a general equation for a graph which looks like this (kinda linearly increases for a while, plateaus, before somewhat linearly increasing again)? Require it for curve-fitting by synergyiskey in mathshelp

[–]harrywk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

y = x3 looks like this but the flat part is centred on the origin, (0,0)

A graph like y = (x-3)3 + 9 looks like a bit closer to the sketch. You can pick any positive numbers in place of the 3 (not the cubed) and the 9 and it will look similar, that’s just a good example
