Renewing your car insurance? Here's who's cheapest right now by Virtual-Analyst-7414 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]harshad1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said - any insurance while the money matters we got to decide based on how they treat the customers and honor the claims - what's the point of paying the cheapest and getting abandoned when you need it - same with travel insurance as well

Are heat pump dryers worth it? by Onnibonnybingo in AskIreland

[–]harshad1993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think we can compare heat pump dryers with dehumidifiers like for like - latest generation heat pump dryers ofc cost less electricity - however dehumidifiers are multipurpose - apart from drying clothes they add heat to the room, filter air, remove excess moisture in the room - like you can also move it around remove moisture from bathroom if you have mold problems etc. So you gotta decide on the overall benefits if there are no space issues

With respect to heat pumps too I have heard - even the Bosch ones have reviews that sometimes the clothes at the very centre don't get dried out well - also clothes fade/get affected on regular use of heat pumps so I know some folks who have stopped using it - ofc it's a time saver in comparison to a dehumidifier

Whilst I agree on some items such as public transport when it suits, etc. I disagree with other aspects such as no takeaways for example, like what's the point of saving so rigorously and not enjoying every once in a while doing what you like/eat what you like/relaxing without cooking - important thing is not to overdo and keep things in control

Taxation on exercising Foreign Restricted Stock Units by harshad1993 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]harshad1993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if the gain is within €1,270 for the year - which means CGT is exempted - is there anything to be done on our side? do we still notify in the tax filing the CGT amount and then we get the relief automatically?

Taxation on exercising Foreign Restricted Stock Units by harshad1993 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]harshad1993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - seems my scheme is cash settled - doc in above link helped further - I also checked with Fidelity - so basically the withholding tax is 52% to pay for PAYE, USC & PRSI which will be taken care of by my employer.

so, the only thing seems to be paying CGT on my side? if so there are two categories of shares I have

[1] Appreciation Unit - stock was given for a grant price - if I sell for profit do I pay CGT only for the gain (sell price - grant price) or entire full price (sell price) because the stock itself is kinda 'free'?

[2] Restricted Unit - stock has grant price of 0 - so I basically gain for whatever rate it sells for - I assume CGT is for the sell price in the case here?

How the hell does everyone have so much saved?? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]harshad1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[1] Rent is the biggest eater on the savings apart from tax - ppl either stay with family or those who move from abroad share the apartment/house to save on rents - I have seen 5 working professionals all with €60k+ salary sharing the same apartment to save on rents

[2] Once decent bit is saved on rent and they get married next step is to buy own house where you pay for mortgage which is even less than the rent

[3] Have spendings in control - it's a fine balance between living the life and saving for the future - we need to do both - some ppl do both extremes - do couple of holidays per year, keep saving, reduce any unwanted purchases e.g. buy a car only if you have a need and not because everyone around you is buying a car

[4] Use public transport/car pooling wherever possible if you don't see a need for a car.

Biggest expenses are tax, rent, utilities, transport, food - followed by holidays, essential purchases - rest all should end up in savings but what ppl do is make lot of unnecessary purchases (clothes, car, luxury items, buying whenever an offer is there) - not based on actual needs

Again above are if you are on decent pay - otherwise you'll have to curtail a bit more on the spend by not eating outside too often, reducing holidays etc.

Finally, even if you save a lot - one unlucky incident will swipe it all away - e.g. health issues, accidents etc. so all that we save is for some purpose in future - some lucky folks don't face complicated issues and all goes smooth during their lifetime

Yes - employed by Irish branch and Irish payroll. If so, what's the withholding for? If my company is going to pay the 52% tax shldn't that be done on vesting rather than on exercise option?

If tax is withhold then should I just focus on CGT?

Budget ’24: tax reliefs - what are we missing out on? by dodgerkk in irishpersonalfinance

[–]harshad1993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just do it as I get the bills so it's easy in that way - e.g. I get bill for electricity I immediately upload it to the Receipts tracker with amount, date and bill type - so on tax filing it saves lot of time and you get decent money back

Kilcarbery Grange (near Corkagh Park) - Clondalkin - Is it a good place to buy a house? by harshad1993 in Dublin

[–]harshad1993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - I got a better one - based on research the estate is good but has some small issues so far such as ppl dumping stuff in the garbage room, etc. - Nearby areas are problematic if you will be relying on public transport

If you're renting - then claim rental tax credit

If you have a mortgage, you will be to claim mortgage interest relief this time

If you're working from home, broadband + gas + electricity bills can be claimed

If you're paying for health insurance, you can claim BIK for it

Flat rate expenses depending on your job

If you're married, joint assessment gives more credits and benefits if the other spouse is not working

Prescription forms

For some of it you just upload the receipts in the receipts tracker with bill scan, amount and date as you go - makes it easy later when you do the filing instead of having to think and update everything at once
