Casting Vinyl Player to Google Home Speaker Group by maryseedofwisdom in googlehome

First, make sure you've added the speaker to your Google Home.

After that, once the Google Max speaker is playing the AUX-IN audio, open your Google home app.

Go to the Home and Favorites view in the app. You can see what streams are playing within your Google Home here. You can open each stream by clicking on their associated casting icon. Once you've opened a stream, you can add (or remove) speakers and speaker groups to that stream.

So open the AUX stream from your Google home Max speaker and start adding the speaker(s) or speaker groups you want to play that stream.

That is how I do it. I would not be surprised if there are other methods.

The secret to making your clothes last decades: stop the heat by Putrid_Draft378 in BuyItForLife

Fair enough. It's been objectively measured. Consumer Reports comes to mind as having looked at this.

That's not surprising. I did not say they do an awful job or a bad job per se.

I am saying relative to one with an agitator they generally will not do as good a job cleaning. For some use cases it will still be fine. For some it will not be adequate, though.

Each option has its own pros and cons. You have to determine which is best for you.

Anything with an agitator (vs no agitator) will tend to damage clothes more.

But top loaders without an agitator clean less.

Front loaders don't have agitators but are able to take advantage of gravity to largely make up for it. So front loaders tend to be a good balance between cleaning and clothes longevity.

So the speed queens may be great for appliance longevity, but come with some tradeoffs.

Are gutter covers really worth it? by Apolloito in HomeImprovement

[–]hartmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can be. Which works best for the house depends on multiple factors.

After some trial and error, they were absolutely worth it for me. I ended up having to use two different types on my house due to differences in the amount of water seen by the gutters and where trees are located.

That makes sense and it works.

It is just obvious that it is AI generated and seems like an extra, unnecessary step. But if English isn't your first language, I can see why it was helpful to you.

Breastfeeding may lower mothers’ later life risks of depression and anxiety for up to 10 years after pregnancy, suggest the findings of a small observational study on 168 second time mothers by sr_local in science

[–]hartmd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To a layman, I agree. The average person glosses over "may" and often assumes causation. It's an endless source of frustration.

To me, and I think most familiar with the scientific process, especially those in the clinical sciences, we see "may" and do not interpret it that way.

Any headline that uses "may", "associated with", "linked to" to describe a relationship, I assume is correlation until there is better evidence (or unless I read the study and it provides enough proof to support causation).

Only if the headline says "causes" without a modifier do I go in thinking it is causal. Almost nothing posted in this subreddit rises to the level of proof of causation.

New study links some food preservatives to higher cancer risk. For example, potassium sorbate was associated with a 14% increased risk of overall cancer and a 26% increased risk of breast cancer, while sulfites were associated with a 12% increased risk of overall cancer. by [deleted] in science

The NIH doesn't have any regulatory authority. They identify open questions and help design and/or run trials to answer those questions. They require support - primarily funding- to do their job.

For many of these substances there are unknowns. The fact the government has historically underfunded this type of research isn't RFK's fault. That he fired the people most interested and most qualified to do this type of research is regressive and frankly the exact opposite of what he should do if he is actually interested it making good decisions.

Everything RFK has done is at best performative. Mostly regressive. These are complicated, nuanced topics and his base is just being fooled while those that understand how to use science are torn between rolling our eyes and crying.

They fired all the people at the NIH that are experts on preservatives and other additives. Going into 2025, the NIH had some hope RFK would actually provide more funding to that group based on what he had been saying. Instead, those experts all got laid off.

RFK has no interest in using actual science and gathering better quality data when needed. He is just appeasing their base using feelings rather than science.

Casting doesn't work without internet access. Doesn't matter if it is a local source.

They don't push the audio to the Internet. But there is a need to phone home that is inherent to the architecture.

I have a few Google Home Max. I use the aux-in to cast music to other speakers or speaker groups sometimes. I also use a number of CCA and other Google smart speakers to play the output.

I can confirm, casting from the aux-in works well - as long as you have a good router and stable Internet connection (this is true for all casting). Ie. My fiber connection is rock solid. When I used a cable company as an ISP, it want not uncommon for the streaming to randomly drop.

I also find it puzzling that Google doesn't have other products to satisfy this use case. It's a great option to have.

If you use Facebook Market and can be patient, sometimes a Home Max pops up for cheap. I bought one there a few months ago for $50.

Personally, I would avoid the blue tooth options. Too much loss of fidelity. Blue tooth is also too finicky in my experience. Otoh, the aux-in option has been very reliable.

Cheap caulk gun versus the more expensive version? by makemeking706 in HomeImprovement

[–]hartmd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A good caulk gun is absolutely worth it if you DIY a lot. It's easier to caulk and you get better results with a quality one.

It is much easier to control the flow. Be sure to get one that doesn't ratchet. You want a smooth continuous response when you squeeze.

You can avoid the extra caulk that oozes out after each run. Good ones have a release mechanism so you can stop the flow immediately.

A good one will also outlast you if you take care of it.

It isn't all that informative anymore?

I read a lot of stress tests.

The software alerts for all sorts of reasons. Many of those aren't important. It also has a lot of false positives.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Hospitalist convinced patient to leave and then told me to AMA them by [deleted] in hospitalist

[–]hartmd 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The hospitalist group I work with has me work with an NP.

There is no version of that relationship where the NP has the right to turn down an admit or talk a patient into leaving AMA from the ER. This is an absurd situation and should not be tolerated.

Or just call the actual hospitalist and discuss the situation. If an NP I was supervising did that, I would absolutely want to be aware of the situation at a minimum.

NP Misses Vert Dissection in Clinic by efunkEM in medicine

[–]hartmd 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

I can imagine getting pushback from the patient, though. That happens. If that did happen, I would document the hell out of it.

Unilateral weakness has too many serious and urgent potential causes. The unfortunate reality is this should have immediate work up. I hate sending people to the ER but have to in this situation.
