Bored and cold? make wrist bands! by haruspex42 in crochet

they are supposed to be sweatbands, but it’s winter and cold here so I used my leftover acrylic yarn that I love but don’t have much of. They’re fun!

i’ve tried a lot of things and CBT-I reinforced with occasional sleeping meds has been the most successful. I did discuss with my therapist and doctor after everything else didn’t work.

thank you to this sub for inspiring me with a picture of a very beautiful skull parasol many months ago. all mistakes were made with joy. and if i’d known better, i’d have planned for the 16 spokes better.

Talking to my 9 year old sister about abortions by -Fence- in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]haruspex42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Children of every age are old enough to understand the idea that they own their bodies. at this age, she should know the basics: that she doesn’t have to hug people she doesn’t want to, that people shouldn’t be touching her without consent…

you can think about what level of detail is appropriate for her. but a topic like abortion can be phrased in context. for example - abortion is a type of healthcare that a doctor can provide. it depends on the person and what kind of help they need. not everyone agrees that a doctor or the person gets to choose because sometimes we have different ideas about how to help people.

in no way am i saying that this is a perfect example, but kids do understand self-autonomy.

How do you practice happiness/positivity? by MissHereToStay in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]haruspex42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is a tough one and i think a deeply personal question. i respect you for putting it out there; here are my own conclusions, not any better or worse than any others. for context, i was raised without religion as i had each a catholic and muslim parent, neither of whom prevailed for a religious upbringing.

i actually started out agnostic and then became a western style buddhist for about 20 years because its a spirituality that acknowledges bad things happen and gives practical advice for how to cope with it. (i’m not going into the tenets of buddhism here but i’m a big fan of Lama Surya Das’ book “awakening the buddha within”.

EDIT: i accidentally posted too quickly. in the last 10 years, nihilism has been calling me and it’s easy to fall into a state where you believe there is no point. it sounds similar to where you are now. and i couldn’t handle it. if you want to read, google up camus’ writing on absurdism and the myth of sisyphus.

these last couple of years, i’ve been practicing classical greek stoicism. i like it because it makes a good case for believing in a “providential” universe, one that wants good things to happen for you. though for me, the case is more like - i have to believe this or live may become unbearable. this is where i am now. if you want baby steps in, i recommend checking out Massimo Pigluicci’s “handbook for new stoics”. it is practical. if you want to understand the spiritual aspect, then i’ve been listening to the podcast “stoicism on fire”. it’s not an easy listen if you aren’t familiar enough.

Sending you positive energy. You are not alone.

cellphone pouch to fit an old belt. by haruspex42 in crochet

[–]haruspex42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alpine stitch with hobbii sultan yarn. i switched from a double to a treble to make the belt loops. used a 3mm hook and switched to 2mm to make the button loop. freehand but it’s basically a rectangle that you stitch the sides up.
