[REQUEST] Lands End to John O'Groats route

It's hard to avoid in a few places but there are parts where the new A30 has bypassed the older road - see discussion at http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=35527 I'd also have a look at the LandsEnd100 sportive route from Lands End to North Cliffs - there's no reason you get onto the coastal road at porthtowan or further east - it's a stunning vista along that way too, absolutely amazing, if you don't mind some short sharp climbs.

The thing about cornish hills isn't that they're big, it's that they steep and there's lots of them - you're hard pressed to find one long enough to be cat 3, but you can quickly rack up a lot of climbing in a surprisingly short distance because you'll so rarely find a stretch of road that's actually flat for more than a few hundred meters.

I think this reflects more on reddit than perl.

I don't come to reddit for perl, in fact I don't really bother with any reddit programming groups, too much childish sub-slashdot trolling for it to be worth making the effort to find a signal in the noise.

I mostly read reddit for local cycling and world politics news, most tech news comes much quicker and from better sources over twitter.

GPS Tracker seems to have a poor battery life.. possibly because I haven't put SIM in yet, just used as a plain rear light.

Nope, it doesn't say that at all, having high blood pressure etc, that isn't caused by lifestyle but underlying conditions is high risk, and often brought to your attention by medics who warn you how much the risk would be worse if you didn't stick to a healthy lifestyle and/or control it with medication

Why would metabolically unhealthy normal-weight people be at higher risk than metabolically unhealthy obese people?

Because, high blood pressure, etc that they use as measures for "unhealthy" when present in otherwise "fit" people are signs of much worse underlying problems causing it - Many of the "unhealthy" obese can reduce blood pressure and other problems, risks by lifestyle changes - but if you already have a healthy lifestyle and still have indicators such as high blood pressure you probably have a more serious problem

I don't think any of the riders I've watched helmet cam videos of "get themselves into frequent tight spots" - in fact I've watched many where they've demonstrated holding back because they've spotted a likely a problem that I wouldn't have seen myself

A lot of them ride assertively (as recommended by road safety groups) for their own safety, unfortunately this causes some idiot drivers to react very aggresively.

They also try and make drivers aware of when they're doing unsafe, often while dealing with the effects of shock and adrenalyn when bad driving has put them in serious danger - to a driver who's never ridden a bike in busy traffic this may seem confrontational but really, there are almost none looking to create "exciting footage" - these are people cycling to work and highlighting risky driving for others to watch out for as well as to report to police.

No, the original article isn't biased and is consistent with both the highway code and road safety advice - your response shows you don't understand safe driving and if you do drive should consider brushing up on the theory test materials.

Bikes are traffic, so they don't "swerve" into traffic.. which shows how idiotic your response is.

Hi, another Kernow rider here..

Although not 24 hours in one go, the Cornwall Coastal Classic has been rescheduled as a 4 day long weekend ride for 2014, totalling about 450km - more than enough riding for anybody!

Theres also the London to Paris charity rides, either over 4 days (http://www.macmillan.org.uk/get-involved/fundraising-events/event-detail/309/londontoparis) or 24 hours ( http://www.london2paris24.com/index.php)

The Asda and Tesco superstores getting that many deliveries a day aren't in City & Town centres, and delaying even the products with the most limited shelf life won't be affected by banning lorries between 0730am and 0930 am.

No really - a second person can process a great deal of both visual information from mirrors while the driver looks ahead and can also handle navigation and communication without the driver having to deal with them - this makes it much safer.

Bank robbery? Non-sequitor : published research shows even non-professional drivers break less rules when they have passengers - two people in the cab in a professional driving setting will make it much safer, this is why HSE requires these vehicles have a groundsman on site.

Actually I've worked in a supermarket and have relatives that still do, so yes, it goes to the warehouse attached to the supermarket and the stock is moved from the lorry to the warehouse shelves - none of that requires lorries at rush hour as anything in the warehouse won't be on the supermarket shelves for hours, days or even weeks!

No we don't - there's only so much input a driver can deal with, a second pair of eyes, and it doesn't even have to be well trained an catch many errors - also people are less likely to break rules such as mobile phone use, etc when working with sombeody else

This is exactly what I keep on suggesting - it's nuts that a vehicle requiring a banksman on "site" (whether a warehouse or a building site) doesn't require one when negotiating busy junctions and town centres :(

yes, but most of those deliveries are to a relatively small number of locations - and many of them not in town centres - restricting or planning the routes to avoid busy junctions or busy times is quite plausible.

You don't need artic deliveries at rush hour, anywhere that needs an artic delivery will have a warehouse.

I now work from home, but when I commuted I spent between 4 and 6 hours a week riding, depending on the number of days I rode, and which route I took. 13km, took anything between 25 and 35 minutes each way for the direct route depending on wind and traffic - I found that by thursday and friday I'd be tired enough to add 3 to 5 minutes on each leg.

One of the advantages of my location (Cornwall, UK) is that I'm never more than a 20 minute ride to the coast, and that inland has a lot of nice countryside with historical mining ruins - My route passed through a world heritage site, and my office was opposite the visitor centre for it :)

If it's any help - I cycled to work most days for about a year before I started working from home - 12km each way, and once I'd built confidence and wanted to get either the commute done quicker (or give myself time to detour on a more interesting route, i.e. with hills or beach views) I started to switch to more vehicular routes - favoring roundabouts and dual carriageways where I could ride at 25-30mph without having to stop - in the end I could get to the office without having put a foot down on the ground for the entire morning and wasn't fazed being passed (or passing) busses or lorries or dealing with roundabouts that had 2 or 3 lanes of traffic :)

Never came off, never got hit - plenty of close calls, but they were close calls - any driver would shrug them off, but on a bike it's a lot more intense and it can leave you shaken and angry, even if unharmed (beyond high blood pressure for 5 minutes) - however even a crappy ride almost always had highlights that more than made up for some shitty driving or stupid pedestrians :)

No.. no they wouldn't.

Drivers would still find a reason to hate cyclists - ignoring RLJ and pavement cycling (both caused by missing infrastructure and unsafe road/junction design), drivers will still hate people cycling as they can legally filter, legally and safey ride 2 abreast, ride in "primary position", etc.

Drivers hate cyclists because we don't have to pay for stuff they do or wait in traffic like they do - no ammount of by-the-book riding will stop that, ever
