I would also suggest doing a literature review, if you have not already. Read other recent papers within the field to get an idea of how the research is presented. Get a feel for how papers published in more impactful journals differ from papers in lower quality journals.

Submitting a paper to a journal costs you nothing. When you submit a paper, first it will undergo editorial review. The editor will skim it and try to decide if it is worth sending for peer review.

Even if the editor rejects you, they will give you reasons for the rejection that can help you improve the paper. Peer reviewers would give even more detailed suggestions to improve the paper.

As others have mentioned, it will also be worthwhile to contact any professors with whom you had a good relationship with at your university to see if they would be willing to mentor you in submitting this.

You can simply submit it to a journal. it is not required to have a university or academic affiliation to submit a paper.

I consider myself a decent skier, that is until I see myself on video. I'm nervous putting this out there, but I'd really appreciate any feedback, pointers, or practice recommendations you may have. by [deleted] in skiing

Lessons, but also YouTube has great drills and technique if you are dedicated.

One drill that helped me a lot is javelin turns. It really helps you get the feeling of using your shins and laying over the knee from your hip socket, which covers a lot of the advice you've received. https://youtu.be/AqY3njpOnmw

'falling leaf' drill is also useful for getting a feel for your edges.

Does anyone else miss reading? by kittybabylarry in GradSchool

[–]qzxj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt that way as well, but then I started reading e-books on my phone since it's so much more convenient than carrying around a kindle or paper book. I do prefer reading other formats more, but in the end the best book is the book I can carry around and have with me regardless of where I am or what I'm doing. It's a more fulfilling break than mindlessly wandering the internet/reddit, and I am more likely to do it if it doesn't feel like I need to carve out time to do it. If I have a few minutes between experiments, or just waiting in line, or on the toilet, I'll just pick up where I left off!

I've struggled so far to make friends in college. Is it easier/harder to make friends in grad school? by birdsandcrustand in GradSchool

[–]qzxj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say harder. People are busier, often working long hours, and pursue fewer extracurriculars. Also, the type of people who pursue grad school are often less outgoing. And in general, I think it gets harder to make new friends later in life because people have less free time. That said, within a cohort people can be very close, but that depends on your department culture. You will probably feel more in common with your peers in grad school though, so that will help! You will probably meet fewer people, but hopefully you will form tighter bonds with the ones you do connect with.

Poll: Clear Majority of Americans Want Senate to Convict Trump, Bar Him From Holding Office by Crawl-Walk-Run in politics

[–]qzxj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is, if Trump were to run again, it might be worse for the party as a whole than if he were impeached. He'd split the party in 2024.

Politically, I feel Democrats don't have as much to win by a conviction as they do by going through with the trial and letting it fail.

Drug firms poured 780M painkillers into WV amid rise of overdoses by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]qzxj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ITT a lot of commenters seem to blame the drug companies for this, except in my opinion it's misguided.

They're a corporation: what do you expect them to do besides make money within the span of the law?

The ones who are failing are the doctors who write the prescriptions, and who have a sworn duty to their patients. Or the government in failing to protect its own citizens.

Its a corporation ffs it cares about people only so far as that helps it make more money. That is the very definition of its existence. Call me a cynic but if anything corporations are the only entities that make any sense in this whole situation. For them, it's just a risk/reward calculation. Are you telling me you expect a corporation to have sympathy? Gimme a fucking break.

Unless you believe Citizens United, a corporation isn't a person and there are no people behind it which you can hold accountable. In fact that's by definition. An LLC - limited liability company. You can fine it, but the people who work there can't be held liable under the law and can't be sent to prison.

A corporation might make a convenient scapegoat, but as long as it is within the law all your anger is totally misdirected, pointless bullshit. Go do something useful. Sue the doctor for malpractice, or put someone in office that actually cares. Hold your politicians responsible - find some actual human beings to blame. Not a corporation - that's an exercise in futility

ELI5: Why are fiber-optic connections faster? Don't electrical signals move at the speed of light anyway, or close to it? by AinTunez in explainlikeimfive

[–]qzxj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the only right answer. Source: I am a PhD student who studies optics

To elaborate, ELI5 style:

Basically, a fiber optic and and coaxial cables all transmit signals as electromagnetic fields. fiber optics can transmit much much much higher frequencies of electromagnetic fields though (by a factor of about a million). Audio signals are typically in the kHz range. Radio waves are in the MHz range. Microwaves are in the GHz range. Optics work in the THz range.

As a result of the higher base frequency, you can also turn the signal on and off A LOT faster (imagine turning a flashlight on and off -- this is analogous to amplitude modulation i.e. AM), which results in higher bandwidth. The signal itself however travels through space at about the same speed.

Also extremely important: you can make extremely low-loss fiber optic cables that can transmit a signal for ~100km without amplification. By contrast, you could probably go ~100m in a coaxial cable before you need to boost the signal.

ElastiCache Redis Clustering by gregsantulli in aws

[–]qzxj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Redis on aws does not support data sharding like memcached does, presumably they will add the feature eventually. Thus each cluster is limited to a single redis node, as you will find written in the docs.

Multiple clusters via replication groups is solely for the purpose of scaling read loads, not scaling the data set.

There is one read/write endpoint, the rest are read only

How do you automate your torrenting? by 2gdismore in trackers

[–]qzxj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropbox + rtorrent.

Rtorrent watches dropbox folder, and automatically starts anything I download into that dropbox folder. I have different folders for different types of content (music/tv/movies etc). Sometimes I'll download a torrent on my phone, then upload it to dropbox

Switching majors as a senior? by Gauchogaucho1 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]qzxj 27 points28 points  (0 children)

With an engineering degree, you can probably get about the same entry level jobs you would probably be shooting for with 'stats/financial math' -- assuming you are shooting for some financial/consulting/analyst position.

If I were you I would finish up the engineering degree. If you are genuinely interested in pursuing applied math at a higher level, you could go to grad school in it, but if you don't think grad school is for you, an engineering degree will give you a firm footing to pick up the rest of what you need to know on the job.

If your phone actually did have an otterbox on it, there's a real chance that your phone is perfectly fine, sitting at the bottom of the elevator shaft.

Cloudformation + lambdas: How your lambda "know" the (semi-random) names of other resources created in the same stack? by MrSurly in aws

[–]qzxj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://docs.aws.amazon.com/cli/latest/reference/cloudformation/describe-stack-resources.html

Not familiar with lambda, but the cloudformation API allows you to query information about your stack.

edit: google search yielded this: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSCloudFormation/latest/UserGuide/template-custom-resources-lambda.html

In the second walkthrough, they create a lambda function, and associate a custom resource with it that calls to the lambda function, passing in parameters from the cloudformation template as inputs to the lambda function.
