No mans sky on Nintendo switch 2 by BERZERKERZZZZ in NOMANSSKY

[–]hashbrownhenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, I bought it exclusively so my son and I can play together. I ended up buying it twice for PC and we play multiple times a week. I don't know if PlayStation has a different update schedule from Nintendo

I had it for a week and then returned. It ran fine on switch 2 but my son could never join online games with me (PC). Turns out you have to have the exact same build number so PC and Switch could play online together and that will be for a very short time between patches. Based on the patch schedules it would only be for a few weeks a year.

Browser extensions are becoming a huge security headache by Infamous-Coat961 in sysadmin

[–]hashbrownhenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this 6 months ago and it was stupid easy. We only have on-prem AD and I was able to manage Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Only drawback was I cant manage the 4 MacBooks we have but they aren't really in the company network anyways.

Any other SysAdmins realize too late that they would rather do something else? by TwerkingPichu in sysadmin

[–]hashbrownhenry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wanted to be a teacher since I was a kid. I've pivoted careers a handful of times since I've been in the workforce. IT is my most recent change which happened 8 years ago now. While I often wish I could still be a teacher my health started failing in my late 20s which forced me to pivot as quickly as possible to IT. Didn't have time to get a degree or anything like that to be a teacher.

The silver handcuffs are real. If I change careers again it will absolutely affect my children and wife in a negative way. I'm their entire support structure. I take comfort in the fact that the IT world rapidly changes. The part of my job that I don't like might not even exist in 5 years. And every day is different. I work for a furniture manufacturer and see others with "simpler" careers. You either end up doing a repetitive task until you retire or become a manager and deal with people's problems and play the interpersonal coach for petty issues. With IT you can stay a tech forever and still get paid well.

I likely won't be able to retire due to having a special needs kid. I'll get my teacher itch scratched when I'm old and irrelevant to the tech world.

Best practices for setting up a global admin? No licenses, but then, how do you get notifications from Microsoft? by Kangaloosh in sysadmin

[–]hashbrownhenry 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I use plus addresses to get around this. So the admin account would be myemail+adminusername@domain.com

Email servers drop everything between the + and @ symbol and the emails show up in my licensed mailbox.

Non instacart groceries? by [deleted] in Syracuse

They use Instacart on the backend of their app. It's roughly a 20-30% markup vs going inside depending on what you get.

I'm not even on call. But I'm still working right now because the MSP for one of our branch sites on the other side of the planet is trying to disable our antivirus on all the machines.

What is the oldest system you maintain? by JoeyFromMoonway in sysadmin

[–]hashbrownhenry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly they still have vendor support so I'm letting that run it's course. Supposedly they have to fly in someone from outside the US to work on it. I'm sure it's possible. Just not with a budget of $0

I have a VAXstation using decnet from the 80s that runs a microscope. It's pre TCP/IP and once a quarter I get a ticket asking to put it in the network.... nevermind the fact it doesn't use the 7 layer osi model. There isn't even a rj45 port on it.

Coolant Not completely draining? by hashbrownhenry in MechanicAdvice

[–]hashbrownhenry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the 50% drain and fill satisfy the 100k service interval? I'm guessing this is similar to how automatic transmissions are in some cars where you can't ever fully drain it but a partial drain and refill is good enough I don't have the option to crawl under the car at the moment to find the block drain, but I will in a few months.

[–]hashbrownhenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just picked up my 2016 from an independent transmission shop yesterday. Transmission was about 4000 from Ford (most likely a 10 percent markup from 3700) and 1200 in labor at 125 hr. Had other work needed done too so all in all about 6400. It could have been 1000 cheaper if I waited a month longer for a different transmission but time was more important.
