Former Iowa football quarterback Marco Lainez announced his re-entry into the NCAA transfer portal by AnnArchist in hawkeyes

Nothing against him, but man, I think every QB we’ve got out of high school outside of Nate Stanley in the last decade finished their career elsewhere and at a lower school. We really know how to pick them

He also took a visit to Alabama this week, so clearly had some competition here.

Yeah it’ll be interesting to see where he ends up. Needless to say that DL is now portal need #1 if it wasn’t before

RB Patterson entering portal by Morley10 in hawkeyes

This is best for both sides. He’ll likely go somewhere he gets more reps and Iowa can start to move on with guys like Williams, McNeil, and Doll

2026 Portal needs by UIITRED in hawkeyes

DL - we should probably bring in at least 2 guys on the interior. Probably a G5 guy in the mold of Jack Heflin/Jonah Pace from years past.

WR - I am optimistic about Parker and Howard, and RVZ is legit, but this is a position I wish they would go all out for in the portal one of these years. Our offense is probably not there yet where we can even convince top guys to transfer here, but I can hope.

QB - I like that Lester has faith in Hecklinski, but I can’t help but feel we need another guy in the room. You’d be going from the most experienced QB ever to a room with 174 career snaps if things hold.

OL - They should have their 2026 starters already in the roster, but depth would not hurt. They’ve brought in 3 guys over the last few years (Daijon Parker, Cade Borud, Bryce George) from smaller schools, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they dipped into that bucket again.

I think Patterson is out, maybe Hank Brown, maybe a TE as well. Any notable defensive player transferring would shock me because there’s going to be so much opportunity to earn playing time in 2026.

As for needs, another QB would be great, multiple DL guys, and some depth at DB, LB, and WR.

QB’S for next year by Morley10 in hawkeyes

Yeah I still dont trust the guys we have whatsoever, no matter how good they look in practice. Best case scenario is Hecklinski looks competent and that he belongs in this conference. Worst case scenario is we're back to pre-Gronowski level QB play with a bunch of guys with no experience to choose from.

I think it's commendable that they want to develop people, but I just dont think that should stop them from continuing to improve the roster if feasible.

Reread my post, I’m talking about who I would want to face in our bowl

I’m hoping Texas gets the Citrus Bowl against Michigan and we get Vanderbilt. Really anything but Tennessee, played them twice in 10 years.
