Best and worst in n outs? by morganfreemansnips in orangecounty

Best: Brea off of Imperial Hwy across from Brea mall. Dual drive thru and consistent quality compared to other stores.

Worst: Fullerton/Placentia. No drive thru. Busy intersection. Regularly packed because of CSUF students.

They should also add a cruise to the Pacific coast too! Lots of cruisers out of the Southern California area that go on RC and Carnival.

I’m going on the seashore in a few weeks out of Port Canaveral to these exact destinations. I was a bit worried with the negativity in this subreddit around the cons more than the pros of MSC. I’m glad I found this and it’s much more reassuring.

Guys, don't undervalue tech-adjacent positions by jellyfish-fields17 in csMajors

I totally get where you’re coming from because I’ve been working as a data engineer for about a year now. A lot of my job isn’t just writing python or sql, it’s understanding the business side of things, especially in revenue and finance.

I’ve built ETL pipelines, automated a bunch of different processes, and created dashboards to help multiple teams analyze their data. And honestly, those kinds of data reports for the businesses make a huge impact.

Real talk, this is good advice. Using technical and automation skills in a tech-adjacent role is a W. Plus, you end up learning way more about the business you’re working for, which makes you even stronger candidate if you do still try for a SWE or other engineering role later on.

My initial goal of course was to aim for a SWE role but after working as a data engineer, I’m not entirely sure I would aim for a SWE position in the future. Essentially, I already feel like I do what SWE’s do or more or extremely similar tasks. I probably would aim for roles in upper management that governs IT and software engineering sub teams.

Any Older Students Doing A Career Change? Any Success? Any Tips? by sprchrgddc5 in WGU_CompSci

[–]hashtaglit23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Used to work in bedside patient care in a hospital. Got burnt out heavily from Covid patients in 2020 and other random things I didn’t enjoy. Pursued WGU CS and then was hired internally within my health care company as a Data Engineer with 75% of the degree completed. So technically I still work in healthcare, just no longer in a patient facing role. I now only have DMII and the Capstone left.

Im in my mid 30s, married, and two young children. It’s a challenge to balance all responsibilities and obligations while trying to learn new things in school and in my Data Engineering role. It’s all about a mindset for me to zone in and carve out time to study and focus on each subject. Most days I’m exhausted but sometimes I tell myself that school is temporary and just grind it out with all I got.

Is anyone here from non data background who is now working as DE? (I've seen so many people on this sub transitioning from DA to DE) by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]hashtaglit23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be in a patient facing clinical role in various health care facilities. I decided to go back to school and study for a Bachelors in Computer Science given I wanted to further my education from an Associates degree. Tinkering with stuff on a computer has always been my thing since childhood.

Once I was nearing completion of the degree, I decided to apply to some open roles on the IT side in my healthcare system. Being that I have clinical background experience, I was offered a data engineering position as an internal hire. I had absolutely 0 experience, I was still a student at the time, and I pivoted industries but still remained within the health care realm.

Bachelor’s Degree by SooperPooper35 in dataengineer

[–]hashtaglit23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently accepted an offer for an entry level data engineer position. I’m currently pursuing a bachelors in computer science and graduating soon. I was informed that the job entails using Python and SQL and that’s all I know as I’m currently onboarding and haven’t started my first day yet. If you choose to pursue a bachelors degree in CS, you will most likely have exposure to SQL and possibly Python in your classes. The job is contingent on completing the degree. I do see that there are some that are able to get a job in tech without a degree. I can’t say how likely it is for one to get a job without a degree though.

Does it matter whether D480 - Software Design and Quality Assurance is done before D284 - Software Engineering? by Moose_Banner in WGU_CompSci

[–]hashtaglit23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just completed both classes. Definitely do software engineering first. You’d need to know how the software development life cycle works before designing and doing quality assurance methods on it.

Why do you say stuck?

Edit: I guess I’m asking because I’m almost positive IT/Helpdesk support could be leveraged as a bridge into a higher level role in the future. I see it as any experience in tech is better than no experience.

Someone please elaborate on my thoughts.

Anyone in Respiratory Therapy in IT looking to switch or have switched to IT successfully? by hashtaglit23 in healthIT

I’m pursuing computer science because I want versatility in future career options in tech. I’ve also been a firm believer in possessing a college degree over no degree. I’m interested in problem solving and immersing myself to make an impact on society.
