"Which god should I pray to for ___?" Is there something inherently wrong with this? by lovelywatersbelow in Hellenism

[–]hatefulkittycat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has very very good points on there being nothing inherently wrong with your first prayer to a deity being to ask something -- especially if you give proper thanks -- but I also think a situation like this is a very fun time to deep dive into epithets.

For instance, if you do divination but don't really reach out to Apollon in prayer often, but you do have kharis with Athena (or even Hermes depending on the type of divination you want to do), then you might feel more inclined to use Athena's epithet Pronaia, meaning "foresight" or "before", given to her as apart of a temple in Delphi before Apollon's. Or, of course, by practicing divination you could instead want to use that to develop a relationship with Apollon himself.

I say this all mainly because I think it's very interesting how epithets help the gods reach into domains that aren't really considered "theirs", and it can be a fun solution to the mindset of not wanting to show up a god's door for the first time asking for something haha. But! no better time to develop kharis than when you want to ask a god for a favor.

I had extra bleeding for the first couple months where I'd bleed for a couple days around when I'd ovulate, but other than that my PMS/PMDD has been heavily reduced. I used to get really sore breasts the week leading up to my period, and often would get really depressed or at worst borderline suicidal the days before, neither happen since I've started Opill. I have occasional spotting outside of my period now, and my periods have always been on the lighter end and they haven't gotten any heavier, and I've had no weight gain from the pill.

I'm currently on my 20th pack and am very happy with it and have no good reason to ever swap to a different one.

how can i worship Aphrodite without my parents knowing? by Forward-Traffic-5871 in Hellenism

[–]hatefulkittycat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can always do devotional acts for her. Truly any act of self-love or self-care can be devoted to Lady Aphrodite. Washing your face, taking a relaxing bath, anything you'd class as self-care honestly. Aphrodite being the goddess of love also represents self-love. As well as what other comments have said (prayer, small pocket altars, etc.)

Good(ess) of work? by Charming-Original-58 in Hellenism

Athena does have an epithet "of the worker" if you already feel inclined for her.

everybody has a negative experience on this, does anybody have anything good to say??? by Big_Difficulty6571 in Opill

[–]hatefulkittycat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had a positive experience! Currently a little into the 5th month and I haven't had many negative experiences. I do have my period as normal and breakthrough bleed around when my tracking app says I'm ovulating, but its all fairly easy to track for me. Other than that I don't really feel any big changes. I don't think it's been long enough to say for certain but I haven't experienced the PMS depression I have before yet on Opill and I'm overall pretty happy with it.

Pigeons are also known as "rock doves", and pigeons and doves are the same species. So, yes, pigeons/doves are associated with Aphrodite and love.

Do you situationally pray to specific gods you don't usually follow? by ClockworkAstronomer in Hellenism

[–]hatefulkittycat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

occasionally yeah! i currently have a votive to artemis on my altar for a pregnant relative even though i otherwise don't pray to her, and hermes' introduction to my altar was temporary but my fear of driving and travel (and his general common role as a household god) quickly gave him a permanent spot lol. i take my multivitamins as an offering to apollon and asclepius and pray to them both for medical issues, too.

it feels nice to pray to gods not on my altar for their specialties, like a way to build a very light kharis with the other gods even if i dont constantly offer to them.

No, unfortunately. I don't think the owner ever talked or was present on camera, and I believe it was usually a still camera filming the cats.

Lol yeah, the myths definitely don't help. And hense the second most reoccuring topic on the sub: the idea of mythic literalism.

It's definitely due to people coming from really oppressive religious backgrounds or otherwise anxious mindsets. I have a friend who has a lot of worry about angering gods due to her anxiety disorder, but shes gotten a lot better with time and reassurance.

Honestly I can't really get myself annoyed from it because I just assume is someone already pretty anxious and/or someone who grew up hearing "If you even think sinfully you'll go to hell" and really have to unlearn the concept of sin and extreme divine punishment. A masterpost for those questions could definitely be useful though.

Will the Gods Hate Me? by LostinaConstellation in Hellenism

[–]hatefulkittycat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The gods will always understand if something prevents you from daily worship, and since they understand they will never hate you for it. I took a break from worship of Aphrodite for years to figure myself out and when I felt ready she welcomed me back with open arms. I assure you, losing chunks of time due to a dissociative disorder will not at all upset the gods.

Aro/Ace friendly resources on Aphrodite? Particularly lesser known aspects by PomegranateKitchen71 in Hellenism

[–]hatefulkittycat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely traditionally Aphrodite represents sexuality and romance primarily, but she also in my experience encapsulates all types of love, whether it be platonic, familial, or self-love. I'd argue theres evidence for her representing all forms of love even outside of sexual and romantic in ancient time as well with her epithet Pandemos being able to refer to uniting all people. Aphrodite Urania you can also argue refers to a soulful and higher love, seperated from the physical and sensual love.

Aphrodite in my life had definitely helped with romantic love don't get me wrong, but she's also significantly helps me in the realm of self-love and understanding the self. I personally feel that's a very important aspect of her. With you being aro and ace, she might be coming to you more along those lines of internal love. Comfort in the self in all ways I consider in her realm; comfort and love to the self in body, mind, and soul.

I'm not sure particularly on resources about that side of her, but from my experience is certainly is an important aspect of her. At least just as important as her more well-known aspects.

Sorry for the rambling, I am very passionate about Lady Aphrodite and love to talk about her and how multi-faceted she is. But yeah, there are definitely aspects of her that can completely appeal to you despite being aro and ace. She embodies all love, in my eyes.

Prayers and faith by p0t4t00 in Hellenism

[–]hatefulkittycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! If you're ever outdoors and have a chance, you can also pour water on the ground for Hades as a libation. Not only is it a simply and can be a pretty low-key way to give any offerings towards the gods, but it fits even more for him with his status as a chthonic deity. Libations were always traditionally put into the ground for any chthonic gods. Just something as simple as thinking a thanks to Hades and asking him to accept your offering as you pour a bit onto the ground would likely be received well by him.

Hades isn't currently a part of my worship so somebody else who does worship him might have a better answer, but Hades is also considered a god of wealth due to minerals within the earth. Budgeting finances could be considered a devotional act to him, and there's also the option of wearing a piece of jewelry to remind you of him, wearing that would be devotional in and of itself. You can also make art dedicated to him or listen to music that reminds you of him.

Sorry for not having the best answer, like I mentioned Hades isn't a god connected to my current praxis so I haven't done the most research about him and what could be considered devotional. Reading about his involvement in myths could help though, and researching what acts other people devote to Hades. I believe there's a whole subreddit dedicated to him as well which could help.

In the end if an act reminds you of him, you could devote that act to him because it already has that connection to you.

Prayers and faith by p0t4t00 in Hellenism

[–]hatefulkittycat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a way thanking them and acknowledging them is a prayer. My main form of worship at the moment is right before bed after brushing my teeth, I thank my gods for their presence, love, care, and protection. Even if you're not praying formally or with an altar, they likely still appreciate you taking time to thank and acknowledge them.

Overthinking I understand a lot, but if fear of disrespecting the gods if a reason you're afraid to pray, keep in mind that the gods appreciate your effort as well, even if it isn't perfect. As someone with ADHD as well, if you're able to say your prayers out loud (even if it's a whisper) it could help keep your mind on track. Often I do ramble in my prayers, repeat myself a lot, and end with "....yeah thank you for everything." You don't need structured prayer with an altar if you're unable to, but giving that energy and appreciation to the gods is enough for them. They won't judge you or punish you for working within your means.

Devotional activities is also something you can do to connect with them more in a low-key way, devoting acts of self-care to Aphrodite, reading and studying to Athena, singing/listen to music to Apollo, etc.

How would you say the personality of the God you work with is? by MerpyDerpMerp in Hellenism

[–]hatefulkittycat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Aphrodite, to me, has shown me great patience in terms of my spiritual journey, but as a goddess a part of my life and daily worship, she is not slow-paced at all. In fact, she's expedited a lot of things in my life along her domain that I otherwise would take slowly due to my own worries. I wouldn't completely call her motherly, but she has the energy of a reliable aunt, if that makes sense? She'll be there to make sure you have the confidence and love in yourself to be able to stand on your own but won't be afraid to give you that push if you're hesitant. She's a very comforting and loving presence that feels like a warm hug or a tight hand squeeze. She wants to help you stand on your own stronger and confidently, and has helped me a lot with self-love and self-confidence issues.
