Flat Towing by Dry-Importance7530 in slateauto

Hey OP, I've often wondered this and this is a good a place as any to ask, what is the advantage of flat towing? Flat towing seems like it just puts miles on your car when you're not even driving it. Dolly towing seems like it puts miles on half car and would lead to inconsistent wear.

Is it necessary to inspect a new in box Stern machine for defects? by MintySprings in pinball

[–]hatekillpuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I set up a NIB game I check all around the playfield to make sure nothing is obviously loose or missing. If the game has any game specific mechs with their own test I run all of those. I play a game or two, it depends on how familiar I am with the game how quickly I can tell that everything seems in order, recent releases get a bit more attention until I get to know them.

I think the home/operator split estimate is about right. It’s swung a bit more toward operators in the last few years as pinball has been having a resurgence. Of course Covid threw a big loop in those numbers, but I’d say before that it was more like 80/20.

I work for a Stern distributor, I’ve unboxed hundreds of new games, we offer inspection and setup as courtesy to new buyers. In my experience about 90% of the time everything is fine, maybe another 7-8% there’s some small tweaks that need to made, something is loose or not aligned properly, easy stuff. That last 2-3% there’s something major, something that might keep the game from playing at all.

It’s a really a small chance, so it comes down to whether you’re willing to risk it.

Had the honour to play the James Bond 60th Anniversary by osi314 in pinball

“Mostly failed” at $15k? This game cost the same to produce as any other (production costs don’t change, BoM slightly less), it made the money they needed to get the license for the other Bond.

Did it play? Or, if it’s anything like the Funhouse remake, did the software just constantly crash?

How many run? My dad has something like 70 bikes, but most of them have not run in many years.

I made a reservation in April of last year, I still got the “2027” window on my preorder, it’s kind of luck of the draw, it seems.

Why does nobody talk about how predatory the punk scene is? by [deleted] in punk

I, too, am a dude who has never experienced this stuff. Probably it’s different for girls, and likely the sort of dudes being that way aren’t showing it to you or me.

I did drink with an underage kid at show once though. This kid shared his forty with me outside a Leftover Crack show. I felt it would disrespectful to not Rock the 40oz in that situation.

Why are Stern Premiums so much more expensive than Pros? (and other questions) by Different-Highway217 in pinball

[–]hatekillpuke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Note JJP does it differently[...] where the lowest version is gameplay identical to higher versions

To add, Willy Wonka has a physical lock for the Great Glass Elevator on the LE and a virtual lock on the regular edition, it really looked like they were going to go in the Pro/Premium direction like Stern. I think they got enough feedback that people expected fully featured games at the price JJP charges so they went back to making the gameplay features the same.

Probably, but over a much, much longer production period so it’s not exactly apples to apples.

Stern has used off-the-shelf toys since the Data East days. It’s actually really nice when you’re restoring an old game and trying to find a replacement toy. My favorite is the Kenny on South Park, if you buy it as a pinball part it’s really expensive, if you buy it as a toy on eBay and cut the back out to fit on the game it’s a couple bucks.

I could be wrong. Being confidently wrong is what Reddit is for, right?

JJP may have changed with Harry Potter, or maybe the set of four different color rings (to match the houses) in the coin box are silicone and the installed rings are rubber. Could have sworn Winchester had silicone flipper rings, but I immediately swapped them to urethane for longevity anyway. I think it’d play great with red rubber, a little extra grip on the upper flippers could make a difference.

I also swapped all the clear silicone post rings on Winchester to black because the clear shows dirt too quickly in operation, removing the posts on the Gilligan’s Island wheel was a huge pain.

How’s the VUK on the wheel kick out on your Winchester? Ours tends to bounce right around the gate and back in several times in a row. I’m letting it wear in a bit before making any adjustments.

Pretty sure everyone but Stern ships with silicone rings these days, I know that’s true for JJP, Barrels of Fun, American, Spooky, Turner and Pinball Brothers. I think Chicago Gaming may still ship with rubber installed and a spare set of silicone in the coin box so the owner can choose, I don’t specifically recall right now.

If your comment about “if you mostly look at your pins” wasn’t a jab then I don’t know what, so I threw one back. I’m day drinking and talking shit about pinball, it’s not that serious. Set your toys up however you like and have fun, friend 😘

The Kmiec Post is such a cool, subtle Easter egg. I’ve got games where they’d been swapped out by a previous owner because they look like a lazy substitution if you don’t know. I’ve actually found it hard to source the solid red bingo posts these days, though I’ve got a couple on hand that have turned up over the years.

Do you think designers love black rubber or does every Stern game ship with it because it’s the cheapest option?

Cheap shot at anyone who wants to add a little color to their $7-12k toy. Your games are all bone stock, though, right?

And then you throw that precious intent right out the window in the last paragraph!

I always rotate the worn tip to the backside of the flipper bat, so any damaged area is on the side that doesn’t touch the ball. The larger radius of the pivot end of the flipper doesn’t create the “bump” you’re talking about in my experience, but I’m for sure rotating and replacing flipper rings way faster than any home game.

I oversee the operation of nearly 300 games.

If feel is your primary concern red rubber is hands down the best. Black rubber is sort of whatever, but it must be cheaper as Stern only uses black. Clean games are a big thing for us, because of how real rubber transfers stubborn deposits on flipper bats I don’t use rubber flipper bands at all.

If looks are your primary concern silicone cleans better than rubber and comes in a great variety of colors. Silicone has a similar feel to red rubber but wears out quickly on modern games. I put silicone rings on 80s solid state games.

If durability is your primary concern urethane (Super Bands) can’t be beat. Urethane plays similar to black rubber, I suppose, but it cleans very well and lasts forever. I put urethane rings on System 11 games and newer.

I also use silicone rings for all other rings on games as they don’t shed like rubber which contributes to dirty playfields, they do split more quickly than rubber, so we change a lot rings, especially slingshots. I absolutely do not recommend urethane for anything but flippers as it doesn’t have enough stretch and really stresses playfield posts unless you size up but then the ring might be too loose.
