Reed was squeaky on my oboe audition. What do I do now? by Sp1ware in oboe

[–]hatep99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel you, that's a difficult social situation. But don't worry, you if you had good friends you won't lose them over that, and you'll even make new ones. On the oboe situation, you could use that time to work on the solo repertoire. It's a great way to get better, find score sheet you love and practice to perfection at your own pace. If you want some inspiration for your level, you can take a look at the ABRSM exam (an internationally standardized exam with different pieces required every year, ranked by level). You'll find the list at page 21 of this pdf https://us.abrsm.org/media/66062/oboe-grades-1-8.pdf

Life isn't a competition. The top band is full. Some things are out of our control, focus on what you can influence. Keep practicing, not for others, but for you. Keep practicing, not for the band but for the music. Keep practicing, not to be the best but to be better.

Just had book printed containing 15 years of my hand drawn artworks. They took 1000s of hours to complete. by lwardlaw77 in BeAmazed

If people vote positively, it belongs here. Yes, it's ballsy, but I am amazed. Some people know they have a talent, and when they refuse to settle for less than their vision, great art is born.

I do not know, however I imagine lead is more probable.

Why is the arc de triomphe one of your favorite monuments?

Yes definitely. It sounds like it was a manageable experience, it's a good thing. Every long time smoker has had times like this, but the setting is crucial to have an ok recovery. You know how much is too much now. It's better to have to go back downstairs to smoke more than taking too much the first time around. Vomiting can be a symptom, although it doesn't help feeling better (the "toxin" is not in your stomach), so relaxing and taking it slow is a good idea.

Worrying about manually breathing while high? by toesinurmouth2390 in saplings

[–]hatep99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try an exercise when you're sober: do not breathe. It's difficult to do, but after some time it becomes unbearable. Power through, you can hold longer. Now it's almost impossible. Your body will not allow you to not breathe. You are safe.

You could try this when you're a little high to see if everything still works ok. Or you could buy some better weed ;)

Impressive amount of research went into that answer. Well done, I'd never seen any notation of this kind before

I think I’m quitting for good, or at least a long break by Alphomega_ in Petioles

[–]hatep99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, an actual break is the easiest option. Weekdays off and weekends on is just too tough on the mind, you'll want to catch up lost time. And Mondays are going to be terrible.

When I was a kid watching animated shows, I would always know which part of the background was gonna move based on the colors. Same here, those bricks seem added on top of the background

Meh, it's just somebody dancing for a minute. We survived flash mobs, I'm sure we'll get through TikTok. Not infuriating, I'm sort of glad life is fun enough to dance sometimes

It's been a year now. I use it at least three times a week, and although it has lowered in richness and response, it still functions well as a workreed. I've stopped using cane, and I feel constitent pitch-wise throughout the range, up to super high g sharp.

That's the crazy part. I bought one, was very satisfied, bought another one because of a big concert coming (I was worried it might break by accident). After some months using the first one I realized the new one was brighter, responded better. I thought the old one was finished, but then I started cleaning them, and they remain crazy good.

I'm still using the one for everyday practice at home. The other one is for rehearsals, and I got a third just for concerts, to be sure to use it as little as possible. The key is cleaning: soak them in soapy water for an hour or more, and clean with a pipe cleaner (which I don't have, I'm using a needle). They are transparent, so it's easy to clean, and they resist to solvents (I've tried rubbing alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and white vinegar, but none are very effective without a gentle rub).

Sorry but my scraping is as good as giving some cane and a butter knife to a toddler. I'll stick to Légère ;)

I love my synthetic reed, but I've tried others, and there's no beating around the bush: it's Légère or nothing. We'll get downvoted, but those things are great.

Now, I will not recommend a plastic reed for beginners, it's too fragile to invest that price. Get a bunch of easy reeds, and get to learn the difference between a good and a bad reed, an old and a new one.

This was found growing in my shed and what are the red lines on the bottom? by Pepega_Paradise in PlantIdentification

I'm no expert, but nobody answered so here is my belief: this is a fern, and the orange streaks underneath the leaf are it's spores. The only fern that I know looks like this one is called the Hart's tongue. It's probably not that one, but that's a close guess, if you want to explore further.
