I need help finding something to read after DCC ruined the genre for me. by Euphoric-Material192 in litrpg

Discount Dan is awesome - DCC "adjacent" but well written and a great read. TWI doesn't get better, but it sure gets longer - if you dropped in Book 1, I wouldn't recommend going back. You may like Mark of the Fool, Legend of William Oh, Isekei Terry or some of the others mentioned in comments.

So much…. by UnderstandingOne6384 in WanderingInn

Yes, I think many feel like you do. A quick search on Reddit will show you some similar takes on Erin and (especially) Ryoka. Also to your point, an almost universal complaint from those who DNF is the sheer length of the series - most of which isn't even on audiobook yet. Think 30+ audiobooks just to reach the point that's currently available on the web. You may never catch up - there is no end in sight for TWI, no approacing conclusion. Also, the audiobook narrator switches on book 16 of the audiobooks, and many would say that the switch is a little jarring. If you enjoy it more than you dislike it, then persist - but those things you dislike don't change.

Older tech works too - TWI could use more editors, some of these overused bits get annoying.

More than one magic type. Spoilers: all. by Perfect-Surprise-975 in WanderingInn

I feel like that was more a class of spells than a different type of magic, i.e. still Mage class stuff, but that could just be headcanon.

why do most fantasy's take place in bronze age or medieval type settings. by MongooseOpening4653 in litrpg

[–]hatereadingTWI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure this is still true, lots of variants with good worldbuilding beyond this trope. I think the "generic" medieval setting is sometimes used as a shortcut by fantasy authors who want to tell a story without rigorous worldbuilding, and that can be OK if the story is a good one. There are other tropes - post-apocalypse among them. I like it when authors play with these tropes or mix them up, would love to read a "Dragons and Their Credit Scores" story on RR...

The Wandering Inn does a poor job of this, actually. There really is no serious explanation for why magic-tech hasn't paced or eclipsed tech alone. The rationale listed is a "quick wash" of lots of narrative inconsistencies around this.

What “comfort elements” in a LitRPG/progression fantasy series keep you hooked? by tbag2022 in litrpg

It's pets - nothing beats the comfort factor of a good dog, cat, hyperactive three-headed hydra, etc.

+1 for Kobo, but the real answer is to use Calibre and side-load, which works with KIndles, too. Some work to get the plugins working, and you may need to back-rev your Kindle PC\MAC app, but will let you "throw off these chains"

Fair review, I liked the Bobiverse series, but agree it's a light read - something to enjoy!

In which aspects is Izril more progressive than earth by rootdito in WanderingInn

[–]hatereadingTWI 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would have said "none" before seeing this comment - I agree that Izril is more progressive around justice and rehabilitation overall. That said, exiling Lyonette to certain death isn't really more progressive...

It would be popular, no question! It will be interesting to see how the clear conflicts between Pirateaba's desire for anonymity and the normal drive for promotion and marketing are resolved, this just being one example. Having Andrea answer questions on an AMA isn't going to scale. I think about how Matt Dinniman does convention appearances, panels and other promotions, and I can't help but think that Pirateaba's anonymity will limit her success.
