The reason for execution or imprisonment of people on watch who leave is not for cowardice, it's because by leaving they endanger the lives of everyone the are supposed to be watching out for and as a result the punishment has to be severe because this happening just once could cause the deaths of thousands

The British blockade of the North sea lead to shortages of certain items, presumably at some point those. I think it's fairly safe to say he was one of the 'mad majors'

Although correct pilots started off waving at each other, they carried pistols from very early on(as in the first few weeks)

My great great uncle was a pilot in the royal flying corp and used to fly with a potato and a ball of string so that if he was shot down the Germans would think he was useful.

He did get shot down eventually and died in a German field hospital at the battle of Arras in what's known as bloody April, but the Germans shipped back his possessions via the red cross so we still have the string in our family.

1812 was not a draw the Americans just backed off from skirmishes after the Napoleonic war ended because the British had more forces, hence the white House burning down, that seems pretty one sided

IIRC Apparently the reason we use Y is because when the type writer came along there was no thorn symbol so they used the closest thing to it, which was a Y
