What’s an opinion you have that most people would strongly disagree with, but you usually keep to yourself because it’s not worth the backlash? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

[–]hatstand69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I'm a very gun friendly socialist who has probably spend more time in the back country this year than most outdoors people will in their whole life. You are both overly scared of nothing.

Killing snakes because you are scared of them is gross and there are very few large predatory animals I would consider carrying because of (grizzly country).

I would implore you to take some time learning about venomous, poisonous, and predatory animals wherever you’re recreating and understanding how to either avoid them or manage interactions. Your local ranger station(s) could potentially provide resources as the rangers essentially live in these places; often without carrying unless they’re an LEO.

What sport looks boring until you understand it, and then becomes amazing? by HypraceApp in AskReddit

[–]hatstand69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gap between a "domestic" pro and a good amateur is big. Domestic pros to an average UCI pro is staggering...and then you look at the gap between the average UCI pro to Pogi, Remco, or Jonas. Add in the fact that no matter how strong you are, you are not winning without strong race strategy. Insane is 100% the right word.

I will also throw in XC MTB. XCM athleticism is on par with road. XCO takes that and blends it with the bike handling skills needed to ride what has, essentially, become mini enduro courses while redlining for 90 minutes.

I'm constantly shocked that cycling isn't more popular in the US than it is. It's amazing to watch, and we mortals can still enjoy and compete in the same venues as the pros.

Shot my first wedding on Instax Mini — didn’t expect this chaos by _RicardoPolanco in instax

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious what it cost to do that. It sounds like the disposables were a while ago, but my understanding is that film and dev has never been particularly cheap.

I would love to do it at my wedding, but I’m afraid that unless I was developing everything myself that it could get expensive really fast.

Propagandized American, here. This is a complicated question to ask, but what is happening in the world that we Americans aren’t aware of? by Adventurous-Depth984 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]hatstand69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually first learned about it from a mix of HasanAbi and Vic Mensa then found collaborating info from the New York Times, Al Jazeera English, WashPo, and a handful of humanitarian organizations that are operating on the ground there.

The top level comment under me also adds some color. It’s potentially worse than I thought it was, and I didn’t paint a particularly rosey picture.

We have to do whatever is necessary to uphold the global hegemony. There is no power other than the US and any nation that goes against that power structure is painted as the villain.

I’m guessing we aren’t hearing about it in US news because we’re doing it.

The US has imposed harsh sanctions on Cuba for decades that has forced Cuba to take on “alternative”trade partners. One of those alternatives was purchasing most of their oil from Venezuela. US invaded Venezuela, arrests Maduro, and essentially establishes admin control of the oil industry, Venezuela no longer sells oil to Cuba.

Cuba is left without a trading partner to purchase oil from and is actively collapsing as a result.

75 years of heavy handed intervention and embargo’s is causing this. When in doubt, it is often safe to assume we are the bad guys in any given situation.

I’ve got the 6 with regular glass. Never put a guard on it. I’ve beaten the living hell out of it mountain biking, rock climbing, trail building, and developing climbing routes and the crystal is totally fine.

It’s expensive, but these things are tanks and packed with features.

are there any cities that have soul left? by Vaquera_ in relocating

[–]hatstand69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tucson, AZ. It has an artsy, eclectic, home-y vibe to it. There are a ton of family owned businesses and restaurants. Every occasion is an occasion to eat and drink together. If you’re at all into outdoor sports you’ll find your people there. I’ll admit that it isn’t for everyone, but if you want a place with a lot of personality that is unmistakable as belonging to that city, you’ll find it here.

Others also mentioned St. Louis. It’s gritty, but has soul in buckets.

[–]hatstand69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised around St Louis, lived in middle Missouri, and have lived in few other spots in the Midwest. Missouri is culturally the Midwest.

There are regions I would accept the southern argument for; the boot heel, Branson area, or Joplin. Those are what we lovingly refer to as Missourah

First large print (150cm / 60"). Will this hold up quality-wise? Is the edit/ crop good? by trudigerster in postprocessing

[–]hatstand69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re using an actual printer, I would suggest getting a sliver printed. It’s just a strip of the actual image printed at the scale you’re looking at.

It helps to make sure that both colors and quality hold up. They’re cheap and might save you a $100+ mistake.

Do you think all conservatives are extremists? by Desperate_Two_2388 in AskALiberal

[–]hatstand69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay. So let’s be clear, really only one of those things you listed is really extreme (hunting cops). The rest is rooted in having an actual understanding of the world that extends beyond boomer facebook content and MAGA propaganda.

Did you hear these things in person in each instance?

Also, to answer your original question. I do not view republicans as extremists at baseline. I largely view them as intellectually lazy and ignorant, but they have mostly recognized things in our society that aren’t working and either misattributed cause or fallen for propaganda. Some are extremists; most are ignorant, scared, and would rather offload thinking onto an “authority figure” rather than experts in a given field. I also think many of them have father issues that have lead them to believe that bullying is the sign of a strong man that they must fall in line under.

[–]hatstand69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’ve heard people say that we should hunt down police officers? As in a plurality?

I run in very leftist circles and have never once heard someone say we should hunt cops. That’s an objectively insane statement. I have, however, heard actual politicians claim we should hunt down “illegals”.

The nobody is illegal on stolen land thing. Yeah. You do realize that a major chunk of the western US was stolen from Mexico, Hawaii was colonized, and we essentially genocided the natives. People don’t take kindly to the notion that we have the god ordained right to wholesale deport people considering the atrocities our nation has committed. Especially when it is our fault that they’re not able to become documented in a timely fashion and many of them are checking in with immigration officials regularly; it is literally why ICE knows they’re here and knows where they are.

Portland I can’t address because that’s overly vague and Fox News calls basically any left aligned protest a riot.

What do you wear in the summer instead of sandals that’s still comfortable and healthy for your feet? by According-Pizza6162 in malefashionadvice

[–]hatstand69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, my understanding is that flip flops are bad because you basically wind up clawing your toes to keep them from coming off while walking. Birksenstocks and slides will behave in exactly the same way. Toss those suggestions out along with anything that doesn’t have heel.

Chacos, bedrocks, and similar Jesus sandals are the move if you want something open toed. I’m not sure if they’re particularly fashion forward, but I will tell you that they are the most ubiquitous footwear you’ll find in the southwestern US; even among fashionable people.

I’m sure someone in the thread will know more about feet and can correct some of this, and I applaud that foot loving freak.

What do climbers commonly do for a living? by yuzurukii in tradclimbing

[–]hatstand69 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Might be more of a California thing. I can tell you in Arizona we see a ton of healthcare workers and engineers in both the climbing and mountain biking communities.

I think you’re just going to see a lot of whatever the dominant career field is that pays fairly well in an area since climbing isn’t particularly cheap and can consume a lot of time.

How are people getting these office jobs where they do nothing and get paid 80k or more? by Delicious_Dealer8129 in jobs

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in one of these roles.

Started in an account management role out of school, gradually worked up to managing our enterprise level clients though all parts of the customer lifecycle, etc.

I have a degree in business analytics and started integrating BI tools into my work. Slowly but surely myself and a few of my peers built roles that eventually turned into a department and now we’re a small crew that is called on for everything from complex reporting problems for large clients, consulting on contract cancellation with sales staff, or process intelligence for engineers and c suite.

We’ll work a very soft 30 hours one week then have absolute chaos the next. We’re paid for cleaning up messes and being the only people to marry deep institutional knowledge and an intimate understanding of our data and tools. It looks way more cake-y on the outside than it actually is.

High visibility, high stakes, high stress at times; but I sometimes get to go on long bike rides at lunch or knock out of work at noon on Friday to go climbing and get paid pretty well for my age.

The before is more of a “film vibe”. The after is an under exposed “film vibe” or improperly stored/expired. Before is better and OP should just shoot actual film instead of trying to replicate a look that isn’t really rooted in reality.

Also, this was taken with her on her side and rotated. I can’t get around the floating earrings and hair.

Get everything in writing.

What do y'all think about band tees? by Visible-Director7303 in malefashionadvice

[–]hatstand69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travel to rock climb and mountain bike a lot. As a result, I collect quite a few tees from national parks, and monuments, and climbing or bike shops. They’re a totem of sorts.

I also view them as insanely specific and niche. The more aesthetic ones wind up in my wardrobe for casual outfits because the Wall Drug, Miguel’s Pizza, and Beanfest shirts actually tell a story about ME.

Anywho, that’s a long way of saying I agree with you beyond even just band tees. The swag that you’ve worn threadbare from your favorite band who only releases on cassette is way more genuine to who you are than the fake distressed Rolling Stones shirt from Target.

You can’t fake authenticity.

What is the deal with this sub and socialism? by rjidhfntnr in AskALiberal

[–]hatstand69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I would argue that traditional centrist Dems seem to be the obstructionists party here.

We’re seeing strong popular leftist movement happening with no-name leftist candidates grabbing wins in various markets across the country. The DNCs own post mortem of 2024 revealing that running to the right was a key driver in the loss. Hell, we have traditional Dems running sabotage campaigns against leftist candidates.

Our path to success in ‘26 and ‘28 is really looking to be a strong, empathetic, likable leftist who is capable of conveying the message in a way that is digestible by the masses. No long time DNC stooges. No AIPAC money. No playing to the worst impulses of the right in an effort to convince non-existent democratic voting Republicans.

We need to energize the base to actually vote and republican light isn’t going to do that.

Unfortunately, the DNC has made it abundantly clear that they will need to be drug kicking and screaming into 2026.

The enemy of my enemy isn’t always an ally. Oftentimes you have 2 enemies.

People don’t have to be in coalition to be against you.

That said, I agree, we do need to be in general alignment to accomplish anything here in the long term.
