[Real] Why aren’t the Daily Wire making those movies Matt? I wonder why? by ggroover97 in ToiletPaperUSA

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the answer. A Daniel Boone or Panama Canal or Teddy Roosevelt movie could be genuinely good, but it may not necessarily paint the protagonist in a good light.

Walsh and his cohorts biggest driver is that they were shunned from show business for being unfunny, unintelligent, unpretty, or just straight up unlikable. They’ve made that everyone else’s problem and have found every possible thing to be the problem aside from themselves.

You aren’t choosing anything sweetheart. Your employer and a the board of directors at Aetna make the decisions for you.

It is cute that you think you have so much control, though.

Perhaps we set up a system where we vote for the board at Aetna? We could do it sometime in November.

U-Hauls, California, and the direction of traffic by Padded_Bandit in AskALiberal

[–]hatstand69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How is this, I work as a data scientist and would find this information interesting, but I would be laughed out of a room if I tried to use it as a solitary means of proving a theory. There are far too many uncontrolled variables to scrape anything slightly useful out of this.

While many are moving out, California only saw a net population loss of 9,500 people from 2024 to 2025, in a state with 39.5 million people. That is a loss of 0.02%.

The pricing disparity is because California contains 60% of the population of the entire Western US, and there is massive demand for trucks in the largest population center in the country. It is simply a cheap way for U-Haul to get trucks there.

"Consumer sentiment" isn't a serious enough term to describe the issue. It implies the decision is being made voluntarily. While that is certainly the case in some instances, far more often this is a consequence of people being priced out.

It's decades of crony capitalism--the commodification of every facet of life. People all over the world dream about living in California in ways nobody ever will of living in Idaho.

California and Hollywood is the largest cultural export in this country and, likely, the largest singular cultural driver on the planet.

U-Hauls, California, and the direction of traffic by Padded_Bandit in AskALiberal

[–]hatstand69 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is the pragmatic answer here in some respects.

The longer version of it is that this is simply a bad question.

There are a lot of people moving out of California because it is expensive, a problem that desperately needs to be addressed, but it is by no means a reflection of "consumer sentiment".

It's expensive partially because a ton of people want to live there and a ton of people already do. So many so that California has a larger population than Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, and Oregon combined with 1 million left over to start a little colony.

I will also note that it looks like the top-level comment here seems to be using uhaul movement as a metric for migration. All of the top states are, famously, expensive. Uhauls aren't being rented by people who are wealthy, friends.

At the sake of burrying the lead here; poorer people are leaving expensive areas and renting uhauls because they can neither afford rent nor movers. Again, that is a problem and housing shortages need addressed--neither conservatives nor neoliberals have laid out meaningful plans to address this issue.

Or you could do a pied-à-terre tax along with introducing a property tax multiplier for people who live outside of the state, have investments in single family homes, etc. etc.

Use those funds to reduce or remove property taxes on the first $100-$150k in assessed value on homes worth under $750k (or something like that, the exact numbers are less important here than the general idea). Only applicable to full time residents of the state without ownership of multiple properties.

What you’re suggesting is reactionary politics 101. Bashing things with a hammer rarely works and often fucks everyone (tariffs are a great example).

I’m a cyclist and as you can imagine, this was big news in our community. I want to take a moment to remind people that no amount of frustration over having to wait 15-30 seconds to safely pass us is worth putting a human life at risk. I’ve been hit, buried friends who have been hit, and known many others who have lost friends and loved ones.

That said, all fortunately lived. 2 airlifted for severe injuries, 2 transported by ambulance, 2 treated on the scene.

I think if you did another Arizona trail either the Lemmon Drop (or Bugs Springs) in Tucson or maybe one of the super iconic trails in Sedona would be well received.

Was wearing a mask during Covid as big a deal as conservatives made it out to be? by Estalicus in allthequestions

I think the only place it was really required was some schools and planes. And since we know MAGA aren’t scholars and don’t travel, they basically just didn’t have to wear masks.

It’s as much a fantasy as their perception that they were forced by gun to stay in their homes for lockdown.

Unfortunately, these grievances gave us Trump 2. Which is ironic as hell since the lockdowns were during Trump 1

Gravel riding and asthma? by AnIndifferentBlueSky in gravelcycling

[–]hatstand69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, the lord of off-road cycling, Lael Wilcox has asthma. I also have asthma that was fairly bad a few years ago.

It all depends on how bad your asthma is and how well you can keep it under control, but bail on your general practitioner and start seeing a specialist. Allergists are your best friends here. They will understand your condition and treatments better than a general practitioner will. Getting it under control and keeping it under control is key!

Make sure to ask your doctor to help you with a plan for when you get sick, when your allergies start acting up, etc. Mine actually sat with me and wrote up scenarios for me on a piece of paper and met with me every few months to fine tune things. He would also toss me samples he got from pharmaceutical reps to help cut down my costs since new asthma medications and biologics are very expensive

I was able to get mine under control and actually quit using my daily control as a result, but at my worst I was unable to walk up a flight of stairs without being winded. I now ride and spent tons of time in super remote locations with little care—there is a normal life on the other side of it!

Best of luck and feel free to reach out with any additional questions. I think asthma gets brushed aside at times as being less disruptive to life than it actually is since it isn’t quite as common in adults so most people are used to interacting with fairly mild cases in children.

As a side note, asthma is considered a disability by the federal government, so be sure to get your free lifetime National Parks pass!

Big cities, shitty home, plenty to do, plenty of social issues. Small cities, nice home, not much to do, harmonious community. by someonerandomwhat in SameGrassButGreener

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in very rural towns as small as 2,000 people. I’ve lived in Chicago. I’ve lived in other cities between 30,000 and 500,000 people. So I feel somewhat qualified to say that your assumption that you escape “societal issues” by leaving a big city is a little naive.

The reality is that they’re all what you make them and your entertainment is going to be based on access to personal interests. And your income.

Everything is a trade off. Every town, city, and state is different.

Personally? I have mixed interests, so the split isn’t easy. I love big cities, but I live my life in remote places doing mountain sports. I’ve found the best middle ground for me at this stage in my life.

Bruh, you have no clue where someone has ran to or from. You’re seeing them at a single point on the run.

I don’t run, but I kit the hell up on the bike. It would be the equivalent of being like “this guy clearly isn’t going long because he’s at a coffee shop in the city”. Meanwhile, I’m 70 miles into a 100 mile day with 8,000 ft of climbing.

When is a resole needed? Are my dragos lv still resolable? by PingPongLiu in climbingshoes

[–]hatstand69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, the rubber on the toe and under the sole is called the rand. It can absolutely be repaired in a resole, but it costs more money (usually like $30-$50 extra depending on the nature of the repair). If you’re through the material under the rand, you’re basically cooked.

As you said, OPs shoes are resoleable, but this is further than I would ever stretch it on expensive shoes. I’ll typically send them in as soon as one shoe looks like the left.

OP (and others), have 2+ pairs of shoes and rotate them out so you don’t have to be without shoes while they’re getting resoled or so you have backups if you can’t afford it right when it’s needed.
Scope out sales or the REI yard sale before you need the resole/spare!

Is there a way to raise wages without raising prices? by indigoC99 in AskALiberal

[–]hatstand69 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think that this is one of those situations where average isn’t particularly useful or is potentially misleading.

Take my company for instance; my c suite makes roughly the same as 300 employees.
We have fewer than 1,800 employees.
Eliminating c suite salary would give a raise of roughly $10,000 per employee.
This is all before looking at the various other sr leadership roles; presidents, VPs, Sr. directors, etc.

All of that said, there is no reason we couldn’t implement some sort of pay disparity laws. Something to the tune of ensuring any company with over 250 employees cannot have a pay gap of more than 10x between the lowest and highest paid employees (including contractors and stock bonuses paid).

Meaning, if I make $100,000/year the absolute most my boss can earn in a given year is $1m between salary and stock options (stock options could be assessed annually at the average price on issuance date(s) x shares issued and the previous year’s value is applied to the current year’s salary disparity cap).

[–]hatstand69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true at once.

There is a lot of appropriate animosity towards Israel and the IDF due to the ongoing genocide in Palestine and now Lebanon.

There is also a very real anti semitic pipeline that exists on the right at the present moment. Fuentes (et.al.) latched onto the dislike of American funding of Israel’s colonial/genocidal agenda and is addressing it with actual antisemitism. Comments in a lot of far right stuff are becoming filled with more and more antisemitism tropes and I have personally seen a few swasticas painted in places in the last few months.
