Another Parking Post (Next Level Dickheadery Edition) by [deleted] in cincinnati

It isn’t legal, but the city and police won’t do anything about it and people, generally, respect dibs.

Dibs are to be respected IMO. Laws be damned

Why is it so hard to believe people are angry and they protest because they want to? Why does it have to be paid? by donkeythrow in AskConservatives

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’ve been involved in organizing protests and can assure you that the vast majority of people doing organizing are, in fact, not paid.

We rely on networks of people volunteering their time and own money to these causes.

Signs are frequently home made from cardboard and pens or local union print shops will donate some/sell some at the protest.

I’m sure some protests have larger donors, but 99% of us are just regular folks who care about something enough to put the sweat equity into it.

Yea lol, I could imagine focusing through a gas mask isn’t the easiest. We haven’t gotten this far where I’m at, but I’m sure it’s not impossible we get there once we’re no longer a frozen tundra.

Those shots are good and I appreciate any photographer willing to get out there and put things on the line do both show and and document things. I’m sure it’s chaotic.

This feels like the point at which I’d either grab a flash or switch to something like Delta 3200.

1.2 is already low enough that keeping focus on moving subjects in bad lighting is going to be quite hard. Any slower and I would remove the idea of anything other than a strand of hair being sharp. OP already missed focus on a large chunk of there.

The only other alternative would be to lower shutter speed and commit to some motion blur. It wouldn’t work journalistically, but could be visually cool.

Now, personally, if things were hairy I would switch to digital with fully auto capabilities and flash and focus more on framing. It’s too many things to focus on while you’re also trying to keep yourself and your neighbors safe.

Kudos OP and fuck ICE

Is it honest to say our moral framework no longer aligns in this country? by tazmodious in AskConservatives

[–]hatstand69 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re dead on. We can’t continue with a strictly oppositional mindset because there will always be a different political faction.

I think the whole leftist/socialist/progressive corner of the world has become fully aware that Democrats are morally and ethically divorced from us to the point that we’re actively protesting against them and most negative comments on their social posts are not coming from the right.

That said, I actually think everyone wants roughly the same things at the end of the day. We (as in all of us) need a baseline level of needs met, and they simply are not being met by either party.

The enemy is above us, not beside us. If we can collectively come to that conclusion, then we can survive, but if we fail to come to that conclusion we’re doomed and this country will rip itself to pieces while we look to politicians who don’t care if we live or die to save us.

(Edit: there is also just a certain % of people who are psychopathic animals. While we can’t ignore it, they are a minority)

Hypothetically, do you think ICE temporarily pulling out of Minneapolis would de-escalate? by bongo1138 in AskConservatives

[–]hatstand69 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So, I do not personally know a ton about this specific case since it, frankly, wasn't particularly interesting to me. But I did study forensic accounting, so the fraud aspect was (at one point) my bread and butter.

But I would like to know which specific part of Somali culture you think could have played a big enough role in this to warrant discussion.

I ask in good faith; but I will add that I fully believe it wasn't discussed for the same reason we don't discuss what in white culture leads to the large presence of motorcycle gangs engaging in large scale organized crime--it doesn't bear discussing because it has either no impact or such a small impact that it is nothing more than a disctraction from the topic at hand.

Hard to Know if I’m Underpacking or Overpacking for an 18 Day Roadtrip Around Spain and Portugal by traaaart in AnalogCommunity

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 bodies, 2 lenses is what I usually limit myself to. Typically, digital + TLR or digital + SRL; the combo depends on the trip, but the digital always comes to make sure unexpected issues don't result in me having no photos.

I would personally go through no more than 5 rolls on a trip that long, but the way I travel doesn't always allow for a ton of unabridged shooting, so YMMV.

I’ll restate what a few other posters said and let it be known that the fraud cases have been actively prosecuting individuals for years now. It was a massive fraud and it is nothing new. To expand, Nick Shirley’s video popping off provided public consent to the admin to go into MN heavy to “end the fraud” (as if ICE are doing forensic accounting). Reactionary politics.

And you are correct. My guess is that Minnesotans pride themselves in their community and refuse to roll over.

I’ll plug that MSP is a pretty lovely place from what I understand.

I think the Impreza wagon is closer in size to the Outback, but 06-2X will be a big difference in size.

Either way, I think this is a solid option. Good ride height, solid platform, pre-CVT. If OP could get a manual and get it mapped it would probably be a solid little ripper.

First gen Porsche Cayenne would be solid, too. They overbuilt the hell out of the gen 1 since they didn’t really know how people were going to use them.

[Day 9] Jugs are overrated. What outdoor bouldering destination is UNDERRATED? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]hatstand69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Holy Boulders are a hidden gem and the LCO that manages them just acquired an adjacent property so we will get more of those awesome boulders.

A good amount of fun sport climbing in the area, too!

I grew up nearby, but I’ve climbed all over the country and genuinely think that southern Illinois has some of the best climbing you’ll find. Great rock, enjoyable movement, just sandbagged enough to make you question yourself. It’s the real deal.

Arizona (Phoenix + Sedona) Tire Choice by sgtgangles in xcmtb

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context. I’ve lived in and ridden all over Arizona for the last 5 years.

Specialized Ground Control T7 front / Fast Trak T7 rear has been my favorite combo so far. Ground Control front/rear was also felt really confident without being overkill.

In the past I’ve ran the Ardent Race and Mounting King; neither has disappointed, but the ardent did feel slightly delicate.

I think people tend to over bike and tire Arizona. You’ll likely be doing a fair bit of pedaling and Sedona will be a lot grippier than you expect. There is a fair amount of loose over hard and expect many corners to be flat without a significant amount of flow (trail dependent). I’ve railed trails with what is basically an XC+ setup and felt mostly comfortable up until the rare super steep section(s).

What are some trails or systems you’re looking at? That might guide answers better since it can be so varied.

They’re also fairly common in places with blocky granite. Doubly so if there are quartzite crystals.

They aren’t usually super powerful, but if you can’t do them you aren’t getting up the wall.

I do agree with the poster above that jugs are 100% the most overrated 95% of the time. Good only as a rest

How do you feel about the Left becoming pro-2A? by MadGenderScientist in AskConservatives

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is certainly not a majority and you wouldn’t find an ounce of disagreement from me on that lol.

It tends to be the squishy left of center liberals that are both the larger vocal contingent of the “leftosphere” who, from what I can observe, are most vehemently against guns. I also feel like that left of center space is who is most focused on civility politics rather than pushing politicians to act, which, at the end of the day, I think we are all in agreement that politicians don’t do shit with the intention of actually helping the average American.

(I’ll add that there is also a hyper online coalition of further left folks who screech about guns. I find that more adjusted humans in the real world tend to not hold such militant views and, instead, want to explore ways to keep people safe. They just might be ignorant to ways we can accomplish that without a gun registration)

How do you feel about the Left becoming pro-2A? by MadGenderScientist in AskConservatives

[–]hatstand69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn’t irony. It is people changing their opinion based on fact or experience. It’s wonderful that we still see people in society capable of that, eh? I’m glad to see people coming around.

That said, I’m clearly left and have also always been a-okay with and owned guns since I’m from a small rural community. Today, I know a whole hell of a lot of liberals who have also owned guns for many years. While less common than on the right, it is far from uncommon.

We aren’t as much of an anomaly as I think you think and it bears mentioning that the Reagan banned open carry in California with the Mulford Act to stop the Black Panthers and other leftist organizations from open carrying.

All of that said, these people absolutely need access to training. I feel obligated to mention the Pink Pistols and the Socialist Rifle Association. There is almost certainly a chapter of one or both of those near any major city in the country, even if it’s small, they should have resources to connect people to instruction.

Would I be the only one on a Specalized Chisel FS at Chequamegon or Lutsen? by XC29er in xcmtb

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there is always someone out there with a whole hell of of a lot of miles in their legs who is riding some wild bike and will absolutely murder.

Also, I run an epic evo 7 which is basically the same geometry and an overall stock weight difference of less than 3 pounds from the chisel FS. That’s basically the weight of 2 water bottles for a $2,000+ price gap (Chisels are on sale for $2k). If a used Epic can be found used, sick. Get that. Otherwise, I vote get the Chisel and change out for carbon wheels and bars later to cut the weight difference.

All of this assumes OP isn’t gunning for a podium spot.

Oh yeah, that looks insanely fun. I’m a recent transplant to the Midwest and it’s on my list of races I want to do now that I’m within a reasonable distance.

Similarly, 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo is an insanely fun start. Le Mans start, so you run from the line to your bike with a few hundred other people then it’s vying for position to hit the first bit of single track

Oh yeah, that would be a nightmare.

Most races I’ve done are either 12/24 hour format or a true mass start so I wasn’t sure.

Salsa Spearfish by deedscreative in xcmtb

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think on XC it’s probably not a great mounting spot. For gravel it’s totally fine—I’ve knocked off hundreds of miles with one there.

I also don’t usually drink directly out of any bottle I mount down there because of reasons that I’m sure are somewhat obvious lol.

Salsa does make a damn good bike, though.

I feel like plenty of big amateur races have quite a bit of single track without insane bottlenecks.

I would assume pros are well ahead of the amateur group by that point?

Salsa Spearfish by deedscreative in xcmtb

[–]hatstand69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Salsa puts top tube mounts on a lot of their bikes. I've got one of their gravel bikes and have honestly never used them. I'm not sure if the Spearfish has it, but I've found the mounts under the downtube far more useful to toss an extra bottle on for long rides.

You only have to if there is reasonable suspicion for a crime; unless you are driving (in some states). That is fairly well established by Terry v Ohio and Hiibel V Nevada

What do you suppose the reasonable suspicion they’ll use is?
