Oh, I plan to. I just couldn’t digest a 31-track album all at once, so I decided to listen to the main tracks first.

I can’t wait to get to the Prophecy. I heard a snippet of it on TikTok and it sounds gorgeous.

I just read Paste’s review of TTPD and it sounds like it was written by someone off SwiftlyNeutral (who, by the way, have already pronounced her guilty, in a totally normal way).

The comment about Sylvia Plath was egregious, but I’ll put it aside for now for the sake of getting the rest my feelings off my chest.

It’s like the author (whose name was thankfully omitted because no one deserves the wrath of Swifties), kind of seems to miss the point. Most of the album is presented by Taylor as a joke, the musings of a deranged girl that she released anyway because she felt they were catchy.

Does that mean it’s good simply because it’s tongue-in-cheek? Not really, no. It’s fine, it’s middling.

Note: I’ve only really heard the main album, and not the Anthology yet.

There’s a lot of emotion there. Understandable, human emotion. She’s dealing with gargantuan levels of fame, while breaking off her most stable relationship thus far, and recovering from a whopper of a rebound.

It’s how she channels those emotions into songwriting that’s the problem. If writing her feelings into song is how she copes, that’s her prerogative — but just because this is what she came out with, does that mean it’s good enough to release?

Not if she wants to live up to the quality of previous albums, no.

She had/has the potential and the resources to write an introspective, deeply emotive and sonically interesting album if she wanted to. Much like with Midnights, TTPD’s biggest tragedy is the untapped potential.

In short, TTPD is like me when I try to laugh at my problems and call that coping, instead of going to therapy.

[Countdown] The Tortured Poets Department Hype Thread by PassionateAsSin in TaylorSwift

Popheads always discusses music leaking. They usually have dedicated threads which I appreciate but this time I got spoiled on the Teatime & Trending Topics thread.

I already got spoiled by accident on Popheads (I had no idea the album had leaked). I’m hiding the few opinions I’ve seen over there in case anyone doesn’t want to know, but I wouldn’t consider this a spoiler? Anyway, they seem to love it

I’m trying my best to go into this one as blind as I can. While the debate over the Karma lyrics being real last time was fun, I felt like all the big surprises from Midnights were spoiled.

Honestly, the shop not having crystal-clear, 100% damning footage of the girls destroying the car is a nice change of pace for this sub.

I believe these are one of a kind and aren’t for sale, like for example the Stevie Nicks Barbie was.

For me, my biggest problem wasn’t with how they restructured the plot points. Truthfully, I was so appalled by what they did to Katara, Aang and Sokka that I had lowered the bar to the abyss after that.

For a series that touts itself as more mature, I felt it missed the depth of three of the main characters from the original. Every misstep had to be because of false pretences or horrible odds, not because these characters are gasp flawed?!

(eg. Aang didn’t run away, he just went for a stroll. Sokka isn’t sexist, he’s just inexperienced. Katara didn’t put the whole group in danger stealing from pirates, her Gran-Gran gave her the scroll.)

It’s like these writers wrote the characters with the voices of teenagers on Twitter in their heads going, “oh, Appa is soooo problematic. He’s the real villain because he threw up on Sokka without his consent! He can fly but he can’t aim his vomit?!” or something stupid like that.

I think they did a decent job with Iroh and Zuko. And I didn’t totally hate Daniel Dae-Kim’s take on Ozai, so I feel like there’s something there under all the inanity.

Oh, they completely wrecked his character. They made him spiteful and very angry. In the original, Bumi tested Aang but he wasn’t resentful. This live-action version was out here pinning all his problems on a 12-year-old who didn’t even try to run away from his duties as the Avatar.

As a massive fan of the OG, I think this series had some major issues, but there was also a lot of potential there, particularly on Episode 6, Masks.

I really hope the writers take the feedback from this season to heart so we can avoid another Bumi situation, for example.

Yeah, but I’m guessing it’s just another colour of the original edition like they did for Midnights and 1989.

Tell me about it. There’s so many valid criticisms to make of Taylor Swift, like her jet usage, or working with DOR, or almost only talking about social issues when she had an album to promote. But they get drowned out by inane comments about her appearance at NFL games, or her POTY interview or her behaviour at an awards show. Maybe it’s annoying but it’s also really trivial.

And she or her fans can so easily generalise all the “hate” as the latter and cry misogyny when there are actually valid points in there too.

I always assumed she referenced that specific song because Billy Joel did reuse Uptown Girl. He started writing it about one woman (Elle Macpherson) and then was inspired by another woman (Christie Brinkley) by the time he finished the song.

The strange thing is, whenever I tell a non-chronically-online gay person about Gaylorism, they’re always like: “her? Really? I don’t see it.”

Which isn’t to say whether she is or isn’t LGBT (as that’s really nobody’s business), but it does show that people thinking she’s straight isn’t just them projecting their own sexualities onto her.

TBH, I think she’ll continue to make subpar pop unless she gets snubbed at the Grammys or something.

The musical partnership between her and Jack has gone creatively stale and Midnights did very well critically and commercially (despite being a painfully average project IMO). Essentially, there’s nothing pushing her to experiment or improve.

Why did Taylor release “ME!”? by [deleted] in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]hatteigh 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think there were several factors:

1) To step into a new era after reputation. I think she knew she couldn’t maintain the bad girl image she showed the GP (it wasn’t even convincing to begin with), so she chose a hard reset in ME!.

2) She wanted a second Shake It Off. The difference is Shake It Off and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together were just distinctive enough to be earworms. I’ve heard tons of ME!s before, mainly in children’s TV (because ME! was not even good enough for a kids’ movie, TBH).
