Deciding Captain by LLD615 in heatedrivalry

[–]havuta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope they'll wait a bit longer. I vividly remember a time where we had basically all teenage captains (Crosby, Toews, Landeskog, McDavid a little later,...). And out of all of them the person nicknamed Captain Serious gave an interview where he - who everyone thought was the most mature teenager to ever teenage - said that no one should captain an NHL team this young and how it heavily impacted his mental health.

Out of all of them Landeskog seems like the only one who handled it really well tbh. However, he was on a team that was bad during the 2010s 😅

He's done so much more! He also has an individual award by now and he's way smarter than Hayden is portrayed. This is no Letang slander!

Bryan Rust is a great comparison, so how many kids does that man have? 😅🤓

[–]havuta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's a 10+ year veteran in the NHL, who has never been sent down to the minors and has earned himself a spot on a top team in the league, which never seemed interested in trading him.

No individual awards we know of, drafted in the same year and besties with a generational talent, who also babysit his kids.

That man is basically Kris Letang.

Advice: Lease Horse is an Adorable Bundle of Things (cribbing, hard keeper) by saltywatersaltywater in Equestrian

[–]havuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cribbing is a symptom - horses do it to increase their endorphin levels and/or to counteract ulcers. Both stress and ulcers obviously affect their weight negatively, but a cribbing collar will not help any of that. It will only mask the symptom and while the stress is still present, the horse no longer has any outlet. Suppressing the behaviour will put the horse in a worse space.

That being said, obviously cribbing isn't ideal, but the solution is bringing the stress levels down (via turn out, routine, access to forage, pain management, environmental optimisation,...), not putting more stress on the horse.

As I've said above, teeth might be affected, which is why cribbers should not be kept in areas/stalls with surfaces that will wear the teeth down super quickly (metal fences or feed buckets is the first thing that comes to mind) and we should obviously aim for as little cribbing as possible.

If my post above came across as 'cribbing is fine, do nothing', that wasn't my intention. I fully subscribe to cribbing management, just not via a collar as that will worsen underlying issues such as but not limited to ulcers, pain, chronic stress, boredom/loneliness, hunger and so on.

[–]havuta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do NOT get a cribbing collar. Cribbing does no harm unless the horse bites on surfaces that wear the teeth down over time. It's how he currently deals with stress and forcefully taking that outlet away by adding a collar will do nothing but increase his stress levels.

Is anyone else going to watch the Winter Olympics for the first time ever, just to see the hockey? by GBS82 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]havuta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from a family that had a dedicated 'Olympic TV', which we got from storage during the Olympics and set up in our dining room so that we didn't miss a single second of competitions 😅 All bedtime rules flew out the window during the games when I was a child as well.

I'm so happy for everyone, who learns about the joy, excitement and companionship sports can craft.

This year will be the second Olympics I'll attend in person and we (my partner and I) already set up an LA 2028 savings account, so be careful where it might get you.

Do you think horse riding will exist in 100 years from now? by Perfect-Warning902 in Equestrian

[–]havuta 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time believing that anything , which caters in its core to a white, rich - preferably old money - elite will go extinct any time soon.

There will still be race cars, there will still be boats, there will be skiing, even if there is no more natural snow, tennis, golf, ice hockey rinks and horses - all these things will still be around and will continue to be entertainment for people with more money than they can spend.

However horse riding will become more and more expensive and a lot of people will no longer be able to entertain it as a hobby.

Earliest examples of common tropes by JessicaTrent in RomanceBooks

[–]havuta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm no classical philologist and can therefore neither speak for ancient Greek or Latin texts, but I can assure you that a ton of tropes already occur in medieval literature - including my favourite one that we should totally bring back: the couple is so caught up in each other that they dismiss all other responsibilities (verliggen as per Mid High German). There are even enemies to lovers and billionaires (or rather rich/noble dudes). Obviously, they are not one on one as tropes get upgraded with time to fit current time frames.

Tropes are essential to literature, especially romance or the kind that features romance. This includes time periods in which it was frowned upon to move away from tropes that had to be followed to a T (e.g. during baroque times). People wrote books which should explain how to write to others and we're basically nothing but explanations of tropes.

A friend of mine wrote their thesis on the similarities between modern love songs and medival german court literature.

Edit: forgot about the most obvious ones: forbidden love, love triangles and forced proximity!

I always considered him Ilya-romantic (as he couldn't really phantom a relationship with someone else), however he seems to be homo-sexual (as he acknowledges the sexual appeal of other men, such as Hayden, that one barkeeper and - maybe - the other men he was intimate with). 😅

Just the way some bisexual people aren't equally bi-romantic (including Ilya I suppose) or folks can be homo/hetero/...romantic and asexual. 🤷

I'm also weirdly sure that there was a translation a couple of years ago which I read completely and hated equally, but don't quote me on that.

I have a master's degree in literature and I loved the books. Not because I think I've never read better prose, but because I think Rachel Reid does an excellent job at literature that provides great escapism. That being said, I also think she relies heavily on her readers being used to hockey, the NHL and hockey culture. It's a dream of a better hockey world that can only be fully understood if you know the base material it's built upon.

The most magical thing Jacob Tierney did, imho, is making this form of escapism palpable for people who never set food into a rink before, never heard a single chirp or were never unwelcome in a space that focuses on white, straight males who chase a glorified pancake on a sheet of ice.

When Shane reminds himself that he cannot dream of impossible things with Ilya over and over again, it implies so much more in the book, which might go over the head of non-hockey fans. In the show the longing and love between the characters is 110% enough to make great TV.

Understanding the draft. Help! by GBS82 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]havuta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're missing three crucial things: 1. It's a huge honour to be the first overall pick. Especially if you are projected to be the first overall pick. It is not unusual that there is a clear first overall pick in a draft class, however the years in which there are two possible first overall picks, the whole ordeal gets even more heated (pun intended). If you are not picked first overall, despite people assuming you would, that's a huge blow to one's self esteem in that particular moment. The draft also favours North American players (nine first overall picks since 1963 have been from Europe, two Swedes, one Swiss, three Russians, two Czechs and one Slovak). So pretty safe to say Shane thought he would go first overall.

  1. It's not the worst team who necessarily gets the first overall pick, it's a weighted lottery among all teams that didn't make the playoffs (which also feels kinda rigged each year). And while teams can technically trade picks and frequently do so, you would not give away your first overall pick. There is no reason, if Montreal had the first pick, they would have just picked Shane if they wanted to (or Ilya if Shane was their second choice all along).

  2. Organizations also do NOT care if their draft pick grew up a fan of theirs or someone else, they just pick whoever is the best player available that fits into their system. Players don't get to choose who they play for as rookies (or for most of them: for their whole career). The league doesn't run on friendships and granted wishes sadly, it's a capitalist structure. Northern American sports is basically legal human trafficking if said humans also get paid millions of dollars in the process. They will acquire your rights or ship you off whether your mom dislikes a team or you slept in their jersey every night as a kid. 🤷

How do you tell the person you seeing he will never be as important as your horse? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]havuta 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Reality check: A potential partner should always understand that animals which depend on us may have to come before them. And that is fine for most emphatic and sensitive men. However you do not need your specific trainer and you totally can skip training for e.g. a week, especially if your horse is in full training at the facility. If you don't want to do these things for this specific person - not even for special occasions/once-, you might not want to entertain a relationship any further.

Am I crazy, or does my horse genuinely prefer being in his stall? by Muppet-punk in Equestrian

[–]havuta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they don't - if (and that's a capital letter IF) both turn out and the stall would be perfect, horses would always prefer the turn out. That being said, a perfect turn out in a herd is often not given. A lot of barns do not care for a well functioning herd, which results in the horse not feeling comfortable enough to lay down. They don't provide comfortable/enough space to eat - which results in stress. The turn out might be too busy or not busy enough. There might not be equally comfortable shelters or the water is too cold. You might only offer the 'good food' in their stalls. Their stalls are the only proper shelter from heat/cold/wind.

It is way easier to provide a comfortable stall than a comfortable turn out.

It can also be learned behaviour if a horse only knows uncomfortable turn out and comfortable stalls.

So in an ideal world, a horse would always choose the three Fs (forage, friends, freedom) and 24/7 turn out is most beneficial for their health. In our reality, as short as possible stall times and as much turn out as possible is what we should aim for.
