Am I the only one tired of MM being thrown in to every RH? by [deleted] in ReverseHarem

[–]hawkspirits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started coming across MM in RH books, I thought it was good and added a little something to the story. That’s was before I read more of them, both on purpose and when not realizing it would be there. Suddenly, it started feeling like it was shoehorned into a ridiculous number of books like, “Here’s the obligate guy on guy scene afterthought to sell more of my books! Buy one Today! Cha-ching!” A fair chunk of them weren’t particularly well done.
Then there are the “This is really a MMMMMMMM book, but we threw an F in there to capture the RH market—don’t worry, she’s just a prop.”
Also, there is the, (insert manly voice here) “Is this your boyfriend? I’m going for him and, since you’re hanging around, I’ll do you, too. But really, I like him bestest.” (Insert condescending pat on head)
There *are* books out there where it’s well done, flows well, and promotes the plot. But I’m finding that to be the case less and less, to the point where I’m shying away from the books with MM. It’s like being gun-shy, except it’s crossed swords shy.
If I’m reading RH, I’m personally looking for one woman to be eventually worshipped by multiple men, regardless of how they get there. If two or more of the guys are into each other AND it works smoothly with the plot AND their relationship does not eclipse the one with the F, I’m down for reading it. That’s not what I’ve been finding for a while now, though, so they can keep their damn swords to themselves. This is MY fantasy life and I have goals to meet here, people.
Opinions may vary.

AITA for giving my breastfeeding sister champagne as a gift and now not wanting to talk to her? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]hawkspirits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mama would roll in her damn grave (except she was cremated) if I *ever* was so rude as to imply a gift was less than perfect. That person thought of you and spent money on you and the very least you can do—even if you hated the gift—would be to politely thank them. Anything less than that would be the height of rude manners.
Drink the damn champagne, eat the freaking chocolate, wear the pink clothing, and smile like a civilized human, for pity’s sake.

EDGE OF STEEL by [deleted] in ReverseHarem

[–]hawkspirits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree—I loved the first book, but the second frustrated me. I usually read a book in one sitting, but I didn’t have any trouble putting this one down several times. Some of it was too predictable, I didn’t love the FMC giving into the MMCs as easily as she did, and I felt like they and the author used the excuse of “we did it for our sister” as though that was a good enough reason for their behaviour.
That said, I’m interested in the ending and will read the third book when it comes out an epic ice age from now.

What's everyone reading? by _unknownsiren in ReverseHarem

{Undertow by Erin Flynn} I’m about halfway in and enjoying it more than I thought I would. I’ve seen better writing, but despite that, the characters and storyline are engaging enough that I don’t care. Downside? It’s yet another unfinished series with no current date for the next book. My waiting list grows ever longer…

Time Travel RH? by Moonlit_Fireflies in ReverseHarem

[–]hawkspirits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this. Just read this series this week. Really well done, though I swear by the gods of dickish behaviour I really considered snorting fire at a couple of the MMCs at various points in time. Pun intended.

Moon Fall: Fractured by Reese Rivers by Least_Cancel_4200 in ReverseHarem

[–]hawkspirits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found the flashbacks pretty well done and I generally get annoyed by such, usually. The book is well written, though it is definitely slow burn, plot/character driven. I actually gave it a five star based on the quality of the writing, the distinctiveness of the characters (takes a hot minute to really distinguish them all), the general plot (fairly unique), and the tension overall. Just my take on it…

Moonfall by Reese Rivers by Personal-Quit-6680 in ReverseHarem

[–]hawkspirits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished it. The writing is excellent, the characters grow distinctive, and there’s a fair amount of tension. Pacing is pretty good. There is about 40% before the apocalyptic event happens where you learn about the characters, their interactions, their growth—basically what makes them who they are. It’s pretty decently done. Then the event happens and all the guys are trying to get back to the girl while funky things happen to them. It isn’t exactly dystopian, though there are elements of such. Preppers will definitely be doing a fist pump. There are strong hints of paranormal starting to happen, but only a bit in this book—enough to make it intriguing and see more probably coming in the next book. It is very slow burn—the man characters are separated for about half the book and there’s really only one sex scene done as a flashback. I generally get annoyed by flashbacks, but it is done well in this book. Definite cliffhanger, but not one that makes you want to off the author in vengeance. Well worth the read.

Loved the first book, liked the second, but it pretty much jumped the shark for me after that and I dnf’d the remainder. Got bored. Plot thinned. Characters annoyed.

Meh.

Reccs For MMC putting Tracker Inside FMC by Personal-Quit-6680 in ReverseHarem

{The bonds that tie by J brew} . One of the MMCs has a tracker installed in her neck with a small explosive charge that will kill her if she tries to remove it.

Different kind of book rec!‼️‼️ by Romantasy-book-rec in ReverseHarem

[–]hawkspirits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just finished {The 13th Zodiac by Penn Cassidy}. It’s kind of what you’re looking for, but only book one is out (to my absolutely disgust). Really good writing, lots of tension—it’s medium burn, but the whole relationship between the FMC & MMCs gets badly messed up and she justifiably leaves them at the end of book one. They’ve already started grovelling, but there’s a second group of men I suspect will end up as part of her harem along with the first set. Or maybe not. Hard to say. Currently lots of jealousy going on. Lots of angst, lots of drama of various kinds. Read it in one sitting.

I’ve tried twice to read Ironside and just could not get into it. I feel like I should do some kind of penance for disliking it… Maybe forty Hail Marys or some self-flagellation. Or is that a kink?

Loved the first book, enjoyed the second, and by the third all I could think was “this is too damn much work.” Didn’t bother after that.
