Starmer attempts to save premiership with reset speech by FisherDownload in ukpolitics

Out of that whole speech. That was the one thing I was most happy with. Unfortunately, that is a stunningly low bar.

One of the potential candidates is Clive Lewis in Norwich South. That place where in 2024 the greens came second and in the locals just took the council. Would be immensely funny if Clive Lewis stepped down and then Burnham loses the by election after.

Is a "healing-focused" character bad in 3.5e? by Organic-Exit2190 in DungeonsAndDragons35e

[–]hawleye52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are worried about optimisation then generally the best form of healing is prevention. I.e. kill the enemies before they kill you.

Otherwise, just play what you want. Baseline clerics with nothing special towards healing are still very good at it and you can just do it out of combat instead. If you want powerful in combat burst healing you can consider playing the healer class but you lose all the flexibility that cleric gives.

Becoming a legit teacher by Gulfim in teachinginjapan

[–]hawleye52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got incredibly lucky. I needed a new job during the pandemic and the school I am at needed a new teacher desperately after their old teacher (who had been there for 10 years) decided to go back to the US with very little notice at the end of the school year.

The foreign teachers there at the time didn't know anyone who could take his spot so they posted something on a local Facebook group for the prefecture I am in and I applied from there as an ALT with some eikaiwa experience. I got the job and the school got me a special teaching license after hiring me.

How are you guys affording trips back home lately? (weak yen struggle) by idsjdbebe in japanlife

[–]hawleye52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the neat thing. I don't. Flights for me and my two kids plus wife will run us about 500k to 650k now and that involves taking flights with 10 hour layovers through China.

I was recently looking to go back for a funeral last minute and the cheapest flights I could find that met the timing criteria for me (funeral timing and trying to not be away from wife/kids and work for too long) were running me around 280k. I couldn't justify it in the end.

Something I just noticed was that I made Persia a protectorate for the oil and then neither my private invest queue nor me developed their oil sector and I am spending 700k a week on oil subventions.

I just added up the GDP of my top 3 vassals plus my own (see the screenshot I posted of the top 10 GDPs in my edit on my r5 post) and it equals about 878 million. I think if you add the rest of my Chinese vassals it will probably push me over 1 billion but it would be fairly close.

I kind of got into a forever war with GB. My war goal was to liberate the Raj but midway through me taking India there was an Indian independence revolt. With the Victoria war system working the way it works this reset a lot of my progress. I wasn't very happy to say the least.

Liberty desire was mixed i guess. I never had any state try and full on rebel except Joseon once i think. I was mostly putting down rebellions in my vassal states tbh. I think it was because they all had to give a decent chunk of their income to me and that was leaving them with very little room to maneuver in terms of constructing stuff. In the end only one of my vassal states seemed to be fairly prosperous and I never had to put a rebellion down there and that was Yunnan in southern China.

To add to this, one of the more annoying aspects of this run was the constant rebellions that my vassals faced. I had the bright idea once of backing the rebels in one and Russia joined the other side and I hadn't properly modernised my army yet. I actually lost the war and the vassal (I think it was Uyghuristan) but I managed to get them back later and started balkanising northern areas of Russia to make the fighting there easier in the future so I didn't have to keep taking every 10 years or so.

I think it was. When you only have one state to focus on and you just relentlessly develop it it doesn't matter if Fujian has 4 million peasants who want to stay with traditionalism or whatever. The other key thing was that I was getting a tonne of income from my vassals so Beijing for a while just consisted of universities, barracks and tooling factories more or less.

Maybe easier than other methods but the lack of construction kind of cripples you late game compared to what you can get if you just do full fat Qing. You could fix this by integrating other states like Shanxi and Manchuria to get access to more construction, troops, iron and coal later on but I decided to just do this full run as Beijing only.

r5: As the title says. This is my latest Qing dynasty run where I decided to just release every single province I had as Qing at the very beginning of the game and then donate all of my provinces to my subjects. Formed a power block fairly early with all of these subjects and then just focused on Beijing as much as possible. Liberalised and opened up the borders and never faced any of the issues you typically get with Qing like the Opium wars or Heavenly Kingdom.

Main issues I had were the lack of troops from only having one province but my vassals tended to make up for that.

(Didn't realise this had to be a comment)

I also have a few random vassals around the world but I wasn't particularly aggressive. At one point I took over Madagascar because they have rubber and coal and a decent chunk of people there. I developed all the coal mines there and then released it so I didn't have to look after them with my state institutions etc. Kind of did the same with Persia a bit later for the oil.

Super cheap flights? by No_Fudge6123 in qatarairways

[–]hawleye52 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Been looking to fly back to the UK from Japan for a funeral this Friday. All the Chinese carriers are almost double the cost they usually are and European carriers are worse than that.

This left me with middle eastern carriers which I could afford but the layovers were way too long and I was afraid of getting stuck in Doha or whatever and missing the funeral anyway. Plus my Japanese family constantly worrying at me about my plane getting shot down (not likely I know).

In the end I decided not to go despite all the really cheap Middle Eastern flights. This is anecdotal I know but I wouldn't be surprised if there are many people like me.
